During a discussion the day before Thanksgiving, Fox Business News host Stuart Varney discussed Cory Booker’s challenge to spend a week on food stamps as a way to demonstrate how difficult it is for low-income Americans to eat nutritiously. But Andrea Tantaros, the host of Fox News’ “The Five” and one of Varney’s panelists, joked that living on $133 a month – the average allocation for food stamps in New Jersey – would help her lose weight for TV.
“Could you live on 133 bucks a month for food?†Varney asked Tantaros, one of the panelists.
“I should try it because, do you know how fabulous I’d look?†Tantaros replied. “I mean, the camera adds ten pounds. It really does. I would be looking great.â€
The number of people receiving food stamps skyrocketed during the great recession: between 2007 and 2010, the there was a 53-percent increase in the number of people participating in the federal food stamp program.
