Answer to Annoyance: How to Respond to Questions About Unemployment
If you’re unemployed, it’s challenging enough just staying motivated to continue pushing until you get a gig. But when you have people constantly asking, “So, how’s the search going,” it can be that much more challenging—and annoying.
There’s a way to use that question to your advantage so that you can get more leads. Here’s how:
1. Be honest and positive:
If your job search isn’t going so hot, it’s okay to say so. What you want to avoid is coming off as hopeless, bitter or angry. Negativity will sour any networking attempt.
Avoid responding like this: “I send out resume after resume and rarely get any response. And when I do, it’s to tell me I’m either overqualified or lack experience. What a load!â€
Instead, try something along the lines of, “It’s tough out there, and finding a job is taking longer than I had hoped it would. But I’m keeping at it, and I know I’ll find the right opportunity.â€
Now, we’re not suggesting that it’s never appropriate to gripe about your slog through a disappointing job search. Just save the venting for close friends or loved ones.
