Black Women’s Health Imperative Launches ‘Lessons From Mom’

This weekend the Black Women’s Health Imperative (BWHI), an organization devoted to advancing the health and wellness of America’s 20 million black women and girls, is launching an online gallery and social media campaign to kick-off National Women’s Health Week, which starts on Mother’s Day.

“Mother’s Day is a time when we show our appreciation for our mothers but also reflect on all they have taught us. My mother was a terrific role model when it came to health and I shared many of the lessons she taught me with my own daughter,” said Linda Goler Blount, BWHI president and CEO. “#LessonsFromMom is a powerful dialogue by three generations of women on the importance of improving Black women’s physical, mental, and financial wellness — health equals wealth. We know that black women are strong and resilient and passionate about our health. As a guerrilla health advocate I want to help change the narrative around Black women’s health, #LessonsFromMom helps us start the conversation.”

Here’s how the campaign works: To help spread gratitude to your mom, caretaker and mothers nationwide, upload an image and share a health and wellness lesson that she’s taught you using #LessonsFromMom hashtag via Instagram and Twitter.  Everyone who shares a photo using the #LessonsfromMom hashtag will also be entered to win a fitness tracker on behalf of BWHI and Fit Bit.

Founded in 1983 by health activist Byllye Y. Avery, BWHI works to advance health equity and social justice for black women across the lifespan. Since 1983 the imperative have launched several campaigns for black women including initiatives around sexual health education, HIV/AIDS awareness for black women and girls, and Moving Beyond Pink, a breast cancer campaign that helps black women find options for detecting, diagnosing and deciding what to do next if they have been diagnosed with breast cancer.
