Former Essence EIC Says She Was Forced Out by White Management

Essence Magazine’s last editor, Constance C. R. White, says she was forced out by Time Inc. in arguments over “the way black women were portrayed,” Journal-isms reports.

White said editor in chief of Time, Inc., Martha Nelson, “sought to limit the way black women were portrayed.”

Essence was originally black-owned but according to White, has suffered under Time Inc. White said Nelson disallowed a look at African American art and culture.

“I was not able to make the creative hires that needed to be made,” White said.

White was hired as editor-in-chief in 2011.

“I went in there with passion and excitement and high expectations,” White told Journal-isms. “It wasn’t what I expected at all.
