ADMISSIONS Q&A

Eleanor Payne, Senior Associate Dean and Director of Multicultural Recruitment

What are you looking for in a student?

Strong academic preparation, a commitment to honor and service, intellectual curiosity, strong work ethic, a desire to be a contributing part of a community of learners and scholars. A desire to help build bridges among diverse students. Leadership and a desire to help others. Commitment to our strong Honor Code.

What unique, university-sponsored opportunities and services abound for students at Davidson College?

Many multicultural clubs and organizations, a strong service component, a myriad of study abroad opportunities, an exchange program with some HBCU for experiences for those who choose to spend a semester or year at an HBCU. Active recruitment of Davidson grads for jobs in Charlotte. A high percentage of students study abroad.

What advice do you have for an applicant that is specific to Davidson College applicants?

Visit, visit, visit. Spend the night, go to classes, meet with leaders on campus. Be in touch with our office for all questions and concerns.

Do you have any advice for students needing housing at Davidson College? Is it difficult for freshman/sophomores to get housing?

We have no housing problems. All first year students are required to live on campus and then in order to live off campus must have permission from the Dean of Students office. We want our students on campus and they want to be. We spend a great deal of time making good housing assignments and have substance free housing for those who choose it.

What is the matriculation rate for African Americans attending Davidson College?

We enrolled 37% of the African American students that were admitted. Our overall matriculation rate is about 43%
