For several years, Jihan Woods — a physician, mom and Hampton University alum, struggled to find a black Santa for her children during the holiday season. Inspired by finding a black Santa at a community charity event, Woods launched a Kickstarter campaign in November to create a Find Black Santa mobile app. The app lets those seeking a Santa Claus of color, for parties or events, “find a Black Santa with ease every year,” she says.
Her Kickstarter campaign exceeded its $4750 funding goal. With the funds, she was able to create the app; her very first one. The goal of the Find Black Santa app is to present children with positive images of people of color in an effort to play a role in building self-esteem and improving overall well being.
