Central African Republic President Overthrown by Rebels


After ruling the Central African Republic for a decade, President Francois Bozize was overthrown by rebels on Sunday.

The rebels seized the presidential palace and declared that the very poor country has “opened a new page in its history.” Bozize fled the capital, and French troops secured the airport, according to officials.

The rebels invaded the capital two months after signing a peace agreement that would have allowed Bozize to serve the country until 2016. The treaty unraveled in the last few days prompting the rebels to advance into Bangui, and for Bozize to flee to a currently undisclosed location.
