Good News Friday: Spelman College Twins Become the School’s First Co-Valedictorians

Being accepted into the black Harvard of the South is one thing, but attending the prestigious Spelman College alongside your identical twin and making school history is typically unheard of–but not for Kristie and Kirstie Bronner.

Next Sunday, May 19, the Atlanta natives will walk across the stage of the Georgia International Convention Center after being named co-valedictorians for Spelman College. While grades have always been important to them, the two never dreamed of sharing the spotlight while making history.

“Before we came to college, we prayed that we would keep 4.0′s all the way through, but I don’t think we ever really expected it,” says Kirstie.

Once entering the gates of Spelman College, the twins were determined to continue their academic legacy and push themselves as hard as possible to see positive results, but they quickly learned that wasn’t necessarily the best approach. The Spelman women found themselves “physically ill” making sure they maintained their grades, reports newsone.com.

“We learned how to have a balance to life and then to be able to appreciate the journey of college and be more healthy and be more happy,” says Kristie.

After learning the importance of balance, Kristie was just happy to be reaching her goals alongside her sister.

“You don’t have to be the smartest.” She continues, “You don’t have to be the one who came in with the prior knowledge to be the one to succeed. It’s a great testimony, and it’s also fun to be able to share it with one another. I don’t think we’d want it any other way.”
