Carole Robertson Day, Jack and Jill of AmericaOn Saturday, Sept. 27, in honor of Carole Robertson, one of the four girls killed during the 1963 bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama, the Essex Hudson Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc. will have a day of service to meet the needs of local families.

Robertson was a member of a Jack and Jill Teen Group and she was at the church that day preparing for a Youth Service Day.

“The goal and purpose of Carole Robertson Day of Service is to engage our friends and neighbors to meet the needs of the most vulnerable members of our community while further advancing awareness for basic civil and human rights, as Carole Robertson attempted to do,” says Keita Young, President of the Essex-Hudson chapter.  “We are working expeditiously to gather basketballs, soccer balls, school supplies and donations for the high school biology labs so that we can stuff a bus to the brim.  Additionally, we are working hard to deliver well-balanced meals to Toni’s Kitchen in an effort to wage war on hunger, one lunch bag at a time”.

The chapter is seeking sizable donations of school supplies, sports equipment and biology lab tools to stuff a bus for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Hudson County, and its new Great Futures Charter High School for the Health Sciences, a collaboration with the Jersey City Medical Center.

The Essex Hudson Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc. is using Thunderclap, the first-ever crowdspeaking platform that helps people be heard by saying something together.  Thunderclap allows a single message to be mass-shared, flash mob-style, so it rises above the noise of ones’ social networks. By boosting the signal at the same time, Essex Hudson is using Thunderclap to raise awareness for this cause.

In Montclair, NJ, a #HashtagLunchbag event will support Toni’s Kitchen, an organization that provides meals and services to the community.  The chapter is seeking healthy snacks, fruit, drinks, water, breads and sandwich supplies to make lunch bags for the soup kitchen’s clients.
