Med School to Open in Harlem

While many doctors shy away from underserved, minority communities, Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine–New York’s first new medical school in almost 30 years–will train doctors in Harlem and encourage students who complete their post-graduate training to serve and work in the Harlem community and others like it, says Dr. Bruce Peters, dean of Clinical Studies at TouroCOM and the first black man to serve as a clinical dean in the osteopathic profession’s 115-year history.

Thanks to a $4.7 million loan from the Upper Manhattan Empowerment Zone, TouroCOM will welcome 125 medical students starting in September and eventually erect a community clinic.
