NBA Commissioner Adam Silver Praised For Ending the Season Coronavirus-Free

After LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers ended the NBA season with another championship, the attention has been turned to another form of success for the professional sports league. The NBA was the only sports league to stop its season due to the coronavirus pandemic and then restart it and complete the season with zero cases of COVID-19 from any of its players.

The initial thought of playing in the “bubble” in Orlando, Florida, caused many players to think of whether it was a good idea to be separated from the rest of society during the pandemic. Players were given the choice to opt-out or play in the restricted space. The format was altered, yet scrutinized, but, accepted by the players and teams that were eligible to qualify for the newly-formatted playoff seeds.

All the while, the climate for fighting police brutality and racial injustice picked up speed directly after the police killings of several unarmed Black people. In particular, when the world saw a video of George Floyd’s life being snatched away by an unemotional police officer, Derek Chauvin as he placed the pressure of his body weight directly on the head of Floyd as he laid there and died.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver is being credited for handling the concerns of the players about the fight against racial injustice as well as the fight to avoid contracting the deadly coronavirus.
