Nicole Chaplin: From Marketing Celebrities to Training Them

We have good news for you. You can have a cool career and make a good living. No need to choose between loving your job and paying your mortgage. The following profile, part of the BlackEnterprise.com Cool Jobs series, offers a peek into the nuts and bolts, perks and salaries behind enjoyable careers.

We all have career goals and dreams that we usually pursue and then try to accomplish. Of course, life throws us curves or we change direction for whatever reason and sometimes, it works out better for us long-term when this happens. And then we shape our lives in a way that we didn’t imagine or anticipate.

This is how Nicole Chaplin’s story unfolds. After taking the typical college route and landing a position right out of school, something happened that changed her career path and it has really taken off for the young personal trainer. Chaplin is now focused in a different direction and not only does it continue to help her, it essentially helps several other people and she finds it fulfilling.

BlackEnterprise.com: You were once an industry executive at Roc-A-Fella/Def Jam and now you are a celebrity personal fitness trainer. How did you first become involved in the entertainment industry and what made you decide to become a personal trainer?

Nicole Chaplin: I graduated from the University of Miami with a degree in marketing and a minor in music business and entertainment. I moved to New York City immediately after graduation and by God’s grace, I landed an assistant position within a week at Geffen Records. Shortly after, I was at BMI then Roc-A-Fella came about. I decided to become a personal trainer after Roc-A-Fella because I noticed my lifestyle encompassed more health and wellness than anything else, and with ease, personal training became a career and it fits me like a glove.

You’ve written a book, Yes MAM! Your Muscle As A Motivator. What is the premise of the book, what motivated you to write it and what has the response been so far?

I wrote Yes MAM! because I noticed there were positive principles that worked in my life that I wanted to share with others. I am a motivator above all things and any encouragement I can provide someone with to inspire them fuels me. My book has taken me all over the US and now I am moving into the international realm with speaking engagements. Life is great!

How do you encourage those who have little to no motivation?

I encourage others by really trying to understand what is their vision and then try my best to work with them on a plan to achieving it. I also infuse positive energy into them and how it will feel when they accomplish their goal. I also pray privately a lot for people, really envisioning that they achieve what they desire. I think one of the best ways to motivate others is leading by example so I am constantly engaging in activities that will bring others joy as well.

We often receive misleading ‘advice’ and/or ‘tips’ from various sources whether online, in the news or from ‘friends’ regarding weight loss, fitness and overall health. How do we or where should we get the right information and what do you suggest as far as a general rule of thumb when it comes to getting the correct information when it comes to our health/fitness goals?

We are overwhelmed with information. The best way to decide what is best is reading from reputable sources and stick with one thing. There is always a fad or new this or that, but the basics are the basics and will not change. Eating clean, staying stress-free, drinking a significant amount of water daily and setting daily goals and working toward them.

What do you feel is your ultimate challenge in life and how do you approach it and what is your ultimate personal goal long term and why?

My ultimate challenge in life is maintaining a balance life. Sometimes I get so excited to train clients that I overwork myself and then do not have time to do other things, but I am working on it. My ultimate personal goal is to be married and have a healthy, large loving family and build a legacy with our careers and have generations live off what we do and give back to charity, and establish an amazing charity of our own here in the US and Jamaica. It’s going to happen.
