Obamas Visit ‘Door of No Return’ on Goree Island, Senegal

The First Family visited the “Door of No Return” on Senegal’s Goree Island Thursday afternoon, the final slave dungeon and portal where African slaves were shipped to the New World during the transatlantic slave trade.

The president and first lady looked out at the Atlantic Ocean from the same vantage point that African slaves once had on their way to North America.

The first daughters, Malia and Sasha, also took a turn at the door.

President Obama told reporters at the scene that the trip was a reminder that “we have to remain vigilant when it comes to the defense of human rights.”
