Tennessee Democrats Push to Bring Second Expelled Lawmaker Back to House

Tennessee Democrats Push to Bring Second Expelled Lawmaker Back to House

Tennessee Democrats on Tuesday will press for the reinstatement of a second state representatives who was expelled for leading a gun policy protest on the floor of the statehouse, after the first was reinstated on Monday.

Justin Jones pumped his fist and declared “power to the people” as he returned to the state House of Representatives on Monday after being restored by the Metropolitan Council of Nashville and Davidson County.

His colleague Justin Pearson, the other young Black legislator who was expelled last week, could get a similar vote for reinstatement on Wednesday when the Shelby County Board of Commissioners will consider reappointing him to his Memphis district.

“You might try and silence it. You might try and expel it. But the people’s power will not be stopped,” Pearson told supporters outside the council chambers in Nashville following Jones’s reinstatement. “This is what democracy looks like.”

In a joint statement after Jones’s reinstatement, William Lamberth and Jeremy Faison, who lead Tennessee’s House Republicans, noted that the state’s constitution “provides a pathway back for expulsion.”

“Should any expelled member be reappointed, we will welcome them,” Monday’s statement said. “Like everyone else, they are expected to follow the rules of the House as well as state law.”

Republican lawmakers last week kicked out Jones and Pearson for breaking decorum but came up one vote short of the two-thirds majority needed to expel Representative Gloria Johnson, a white woman who joined Jones and Pearson in the demonstration but did not speak through a megaphone.

The conflict has captured national attention and served as a rallying cry for Democrats over the issues of democracy, gun violence and racial inequality.

A large crowd calling for gun control protested outside the statehouse March 30, and Jones and Pearson engaged in a call-and-response from the chamber’s floor with people who took their protest into the spectators gallery following the March 27 school shooting in Nashville that killed three 9-year-old school children and three adults.

On Monday, about 600 protesters gathered outside the Metropolitan Council as it voted 36-0 to make Jones, 27, the interim representative.

The vote set off a celebration as supporters shouted “Whose house? Our house!” and “No Justin, no peace” while displaying signs that read, “Protect kids, not guns” and “Stop sales of AR15.”

Many of them followed Jones to the statehouse, cheering him as he was sworn in on the steps.

The House was in session as he then quietly entered the chamber and took his seat. A colleague shook his hand. Jones was introduced to cheers from the gallery, and he raised a fist in acknowledgement.

“I want to welcome the people back to the people’s house,” Jones said after House Speaker Cameron Sexton, a Republican, gave him an opportunity to address the assembly. “I want to welcome democracy back to the people’s house.” Jones then settled in to listen to debate and take part in voting.

Republican lawmakers hold a 75-23 supermajority and have shown little concern for reprisal from voters.

Sunshine Health Donates $25,000 to FAMU School of Nursing

Sunshine Health Donates $25,000 to FAMU School of Nursing

Sunshine Health today announced a $25,000 donation to support the Last Mile Scholarship Fund for nursing students at Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU), a historically Black university.

The donation will support more than 40 graduating nursing students with registration and examination fees for NCLEX, the state’s licensing exam. The funds will also assist graduate students in the Adult Gerontology and Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner (NP) Programs with preceptor accommodations and test prep resources.

According to the 2020 National Nursing Workforce Study, Black/African American registered nurses make up 6.7% of the nursing workforce.

“Nurses are an essential part of our healthcare system, and it’s important that our workforce reflects the diversity of our communities to best serve our members and support our mission to help improve health outcomes across the state,” said Nathan Landsbaum, CEO of Sunshine Health.

Sunshine Health is proud to collaborate with FAMU to increase minority representation in the nursing profession and address the nationwide nursing shortage.

Over the past year, the university found that supporting the coverage of exam fees resulted in students testing six to eight weeks post-graduation and receiving higher NCLEX first-time pass rates.

“We are incredibly grateful to Sunshine Health for their generosity and commitment to our students,” said Dr. Shelly A. Johnson, Dean and Professor, Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University. “Their contribution will make a difference in the lives of our nursing students, giving them financial support to cover exam costs and help them achieve their professional goals.”

How Malcolm Kenyatta’s ‘Do Not Wait Your Turn’ Documentary Serves As ‘A Love Story to Pennsylvania’

History-making has become a signature for Malcolm Kenyatta, a Pennsylvania State Representative for the 181st district who became the first openly LGBTQ+ person of color and one of the youngest members elected to the PA General Assembly in 2018.

At just 32 years old, Kenyatta is the first openly LGBTQ+ person of color to run for the U.S. Senate in American history. Now, the general public gets an inside look at his barrier-breaking campaign in the documentary, Kenyatta: Do Not Wait Your Turn.

Executive produced by Al Roker along with Hunter Johnson and Derek Helwig of Xpedition, the film premiered at the 2023 Outfest Fusion QTBIPOC Film Festival with a Lee Daniels-moderated Q&A with Kenyatta, Roker, Malcolm’s husband Dr. Matt Kenyatta, as well as Johnson and Helwig.

The highly personal documentary follows Kenyatta’s challenging journey to become Pennsylvania’s first Black and openly gay U.S. Senator. It highlights the self-described “poor, Black, and gay kid from North Philly” discovering how his campaign was bigger than taking on the political competition.

“This documentary is at its core a love story to Pennsylvania, to progress and a story about Black love,” Kenyatta told BLACK ENTERPRISE.

“In my run for U.S. Senate, we ran up against a number of systemic challenges and the prickly notion of ‘electability’ which is often code for not electing Black candidates.”

It also shares the biggest lessons the young Representative learned while running for office. A campaign he believes worked well because of his “authenticity” in an age where the public demands more honesty from politicians.

“In our campaign, we punched above our weight constantly earning endorsements and support from major figures and unions in spite of us running behind opponents in terms of money raised,” Kenyatta explained.

“We dramatically overperformed our polling on Election Day and I think chipped away at the idea of who can win in a place like Pennsylvania.”

Kenyatta is currently running for Pennsylvania Auditor General and has used the slogan, “We need an underdog as the watchdog.” It’s a message his campaign stands behind as he continues advocating for Pennsylvania’s working class.

“I’m running for Auditor General because it’s time for the underdog to be a watchdog for Pennsylvania’s working families,” he said. “To ask the tough questions, to help reimagine and streamline government, and to help build the coalitions to fix what’s wrong.”

“Folks in every corner of Pennsylvania have welcomed me into their neighborhoods, their homes and their faith communities,” Kenyatta continued.

“They’ve told me their stories and I’ve shared my own. In those conversations we’ve talked about Pennsylvania’s problems, but also its promise. We need someone who has the back of working families and as Auditor I will.”

Kenyatta’s role in politics comes as conservative attacks on LGBTQ+ rights intensify. But according to the North Philly native, the bills and laws taking aim at the LGBTQ+ community are only hurting those trying to get them passed.

“When all a politician or political party can offer you is a list of who to hate, what to ban, and which marginalized group to blame it reveals that they have no real ideas for making your life better,” Kenyatta said.

“As dangerous as these attacks are on our community it’s also a clear distraction.”

Kenyatta is confident that his documentary and current run for Pennsylvania’s Auditor General will spread a much-needed message of “hope.”

“Everyone who has seen it has left with one word on the tip of their tongue — hope,” Kenyatta said of his documentary. “We can move the needle if we stand up and speak out. Democracy requires something of us and when we do our part we can preserve it for the next generation.”

DJ Cassidy, Big Daddy Kane, Doug E. Fresh, Rakim, Slick Rick, and More to Celebrate 50 Years of Hip Hop at Radio City Music Hall

A star-studded lineup of hip-hop pioneers is set to hit Radio City Music Hall in celebration of the art form’s 50th birthday.

On Monday, DJ Cassidy unveiled the lineup for “Pass The Mic Live!” coming to the birthplace of hip hop on July 21, Billboard reported. The one-night-only event will feature 25 hip-hop icons including Big Daddy Kane, Doug E. Fresh, Rakim, and Slick Rick, among many others.

Roxanne Shante, The Sugarhill Gang, Monie Love, Kurtis Blow, and Kid ‘N Play are also set to perform at the live show made in partnership with the Black Promoters Collective (BPC) and presented by Martell Cognac. There will also be a number of special guest appearances as part of the show.

DJ Cassidy is elated to spearhead the live show, as a student of hip-hop and a fan of the acts who will be hitting the stage.

“As a 10-year-old DJ, I grew up idolizing every single one of these legendary hip-hop heavyweights,” DJ Cassidy said.

“Their records were my first pieces of vinyl. Their posters were on my wall. Their tapes were in my Walkman. Together, they laid the foundation for what was to transform the world musically, culturally and beyond.”

With the concert coming just weeks ahead of hip-hop’s 50th birthday on August 11, DJ Cassidy thinks the live show will serve as the perfect pre-birthday celebration.

“I am truly grateful to be celebrating them and their profound impact on the culture, just days from the 50th birthday of hip-hop [Aug. 11] and minutes away from where Kool Herc DJ’d the first hip-hop party in 1973,” he continued.

“Uniting 25 native New York icons of hip-hop’s golden age on one stage for one night in the birthplace of hip-hop, also my hometown, will be the greatest honor of my life.”

He explained his excitement in a lengthy Instagram caption promoting the upcoming show.

Two Women Bonded Over Miscarriages, One Almost Died After Being Turned Away By Florida Doctors As Result of 15-Week Abortion Ban

Two Women Bonded Over Miscarriages, One Almost Died After Being Turned Away By Florida Doctors As Result of 15-Week Abortion Ban

Lives are at stake under the new abortion laws.

Two Florida women, Anya Cook and Shanae Smith-Cunningham, both suffered miscarriages and were reportedly denied medical care as a result of the state’s 15-week abortion ban, which almost resulted in the death of one of the pregnant women.

According to The Washington Post, the two women, who bonded over their pregnancy complications, both experienced preterm pre-labor rupture of the membranes (PPROM). Cook and Smith-Cunningham were 16 and 19 weeks pregnant when they sought medical care in December, weeks before doctors considered their fetuses to have reasonable chances of survival.

Cook visited a Coral Springs hospital after experiencing the loss of amniotic fluid. Doctors never offered the woman the options of labor induction or surgical abortion. After being given antibiotics and directions to wait at home for her condition to progress, Cook ended up delivering her 16-week-old fetus in the bathroom of a nail salon. She began hemorrhaging, losing nearly half the blood in her body.

Smith-Cunningham developed PPROM after her friend, and was sent home by Florida doctors who refused to provide care unless her cervix dilated further, or she began experiencing an active miscarriage.

“They are playing with people’s lives with this law,” Smith-Cunningham said.

Cook was rushed to the hospital a second time and given a treatment that reportedly presented complications with the possible difficulty of carrying a pregnancy to term.

“Florida’s 15-week abortion ban brutally tortured two friends, one to the brink of death,” Slate journalist Mark Joseph Stern wrote on Twitter. “Because Florida law allows emergency abortions only in the most extreme and dire circumstances, patients who are not yet on the brink of death are encouraged to undergo hysterectomies instead. In what world is that pro-life?”

Common Dreams reported that Republicans are working towards more extreme restrictions, proposing a six-week abortion ban.

State Sen. Lauren Book (D-32), representative for both Smith-Cunningham and Cook, said things will worsen for women who “will die” if the six-week ban passes. “Despite denials from across the aisle, the truth is clear,” Book said. “Florida mothers who suffer miscarriages are ALREADY being forced to the brink of death before receiving needed abortion care.”

Florida Gon’ Florida: TikTok Banned From School-Owned Devices At All State Universities

Florida Gon’ Florida: TikTok Banned From School-Owned Devices At All State Universities

TikTok really has Florida shook.

The State University System of Florida Board of Governors recently banned the popular social media app from school-owned devices at state universities, “due to the continued and increasing landscape of cyber threats,” CNN reported.

After a memo went out to state university system presidents, the ban was initiated effective immediately. “This regulation requires institutions to remove technologies published in the State University System (SUS) Prohibited Technologies List from any university-owned device and to block network traffic associated with these technologies,” Chancellor Ray Rodrigues said.

Other software, applications, and developers, like Tencent QQ, WeChat, Vkontakte, Kaspersky and Fizz, have been banned as well.

The university system, including the University of Florida, Florida Atlantic University, University of South Florida had already put the ban in place. The Tallahassee Democrat reported FSU Associate Provost for Strategy and Analytics Rick Burnette said the school is committed to “protecting our community against potential cyber threats.”

“This includes putting safety measures in place to protect our faculty, staff and students’ personal data against any potential threats,” he added.

Florida A&M University, a Florida-based HBCU that used to use the app, took the steps to ban TikTok from their campus last month. The app allows users to record and edit short-form video content such as dances and info sessions. Several FAMU students who used the app raised concerns over the sudden change, saying it limited their free speech. “The main issue is that it’s limiting free speech and access to entertainment and information since TikTok is also a breeding ground for getting information out to people in a short amount of time,” sophomore C.J. Mitchells said.

Another student said “the ban would be cutting off a way of communicating, especially with today’s world being so much more digital.”

In the meantime, TikTok officials have made it more than clear that security isn’t a threat while using the app. “TikTok has taken unprecedented actions to address national security concerns by securing U.S. user data on U.S. soil,” spokesperson Hilary McQuaide said. “TikTok is enjoyed by more than 150 million Americans including university and college students and teachers to engage in the classroom.”

Rappers Defend Michael B. Jordan And Jonathan Majors After Cam’Ron Disses ‘Creed III’ Over Cast Photo

Rapper Cam’ron faced criticism from the hip-hop community after he used a photo of Michael B. Jordan and Jonathan Majors to seemingly question their sexuality and shun their hit film Creed III.

The “Oh Boy” rapper came under fire on Saturday after he took to Instagram to share two photos from Jordan and Majors’ New York Times photoshoot and credit the intimate pics as the reason why he opted out of watching the third installment of the Creed franchise.

The first photo showed Majors hugging Jordan from behind as they both looked toward the camera. The second photo showed the actors resting their heads on each other.

“The reason I didn’t go see creed,” Cam’ron captioned his post.

But his shady post didn’t receive the support he might’ve hoped for from the hip-hop community. Fellow rappers like Skillz, Masta Ace, DJ Paul from Three 6 Mafia, and Jabori White from A Tribe Called Quest were quick to call out the “Hey Ma” rapper for his disparaging post, as captured by Insider.

“We are our own worst enemies smh,” Skillz wrote in a separate post.

“I tell all my homies I love em…Why? Cuz I do! Sometimes it throws em off but Ion care, Ima keep saying that ish. Tomorrow aint promised. We all getting older man & death is definitely  certain. Its already hard enough out here for black men as it is bro.”

“How come men cant have healthy relationships with other men without masculinity or sexuality being questioned?” he added.

Other rappers left comments showing their support of Skillz’ stance and further defending Jordan and Majors from Cam’ron’s controversial post.

“Well said Skillz…. !!!! I’m sharing this absolutely!” Masta Ace wrote in response.

“I think being afraid to show love to brothers because of being seen as gay is well…. Gay,” Jabori White said.

“My brother missing out cause its an Amazing movie!” DJ Paul quipped before making a shameless plug. “I’ve watched it five times and I’m not just saying that because we had the theme song in the trailer.”

Grand Jury Indicts Former Texas Corrections Officer Accused of Shooting Black Inmate In the Back, Killing Him

Grand Jury Indicts Former Texas Corrections Officer Accused of Shooting Black Inmate In the Back, Killing Him

Isaiah Garcia, a former corrections officer for the Hays County Sheriff’s Office in Texas was indicted last Friday by a grand jury on felony deadly conduct charges in the death of Joshua Leon Wright.

KSAT reported that Garcia allegedly shot Wright, 36, in the back multiple times after a fight broke out at Seton Hospital last December. Wright was receiving treatment at the medical facility when, after Garcia removed handcuffs for Wright to use the bathroom, he suddenly tried to escape.

Garcia, who was guarding Wright, then allegedly shot and killed him.

Hays County Criminal District Attorney, Kelly Higgins, claimed evidence presented by investigators determined the severity of the charges. “After hearing the evidence, the grand jury determined that the offense of Deadly Conduct was the most appropriate charge,” Higgins said. Texas Rangers presented findings from their investigation to the grand jury, including video from Garcia’s body cam.

The victim was incarcerated for numerous charges, including reckless driving, criminal mischief, and evading arrest. Combined Law Enforcement Association of Texas (CLEAT), the largest police officers’ union in the state, claim Wright was wielding a weapon when the fight happened.

Legal counsel representing the Wright family, Chevo Pastrano, said the victim was shot at least six times, based on information presented from an independent autopsy. His family also released a statement, with the support of civil rights attorney, Ben Crump, stating, “The family of Joshua Wright is relieved by news of this indictment, as it gets us one step closer to ensuring that former officer Garcia will be held accountable for his deadly actions,” the statement read, according to Hays Free Press News Dispatch.

“It is crucial that when officers act violently and against protocol, that they and the departments that train them are held responsible for their actions to ensure that these killings stop happening.”

Garcia’s charges carry a potential punishment of a maximum of ten years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000.
