Upstart Sherman Preston Set To Become A Top Menswear Line

Sherman Preston is the brainchild of two upstart New York City designers (and childhood friends) Sherman Joseph and Preston Williams, a minimalist collection that speaks to the modern, metropolitan man. The design duo recently debuted their Spring Summer 2015 collection, “C O V E Y,” styled by Mitsu Tsuchiya, during New York Fashion Week.

The presentation, which was held at former Time Inc hancho Anne Moore’s ‘The Curator Gallery,’ was attended by a range of industry veterans and celebrity guests, including recording artist Mateo, who was caught wearing the brand’s  ‘Phillip’ tailored motif print shirt, a staple piece from the collection.

The C O V E Y collection redefines the use of houndstooth, pairing it with a contemporary motif pattern on tailored pieces. The capsule incorporates cool hues while blending minimalistic suede elements. Refined style with an emphasis on fit is the philosophy, comprised of lightweight cottons and wools ideal for the warmer climate. The inspiration for their presentation: classic American menswear with a focus on tailoring and fit. “We want to bring the American culture to the forefront with classic looks, but European tailoring,” the two men say.

Both hailing from the Bronx, New York, Joseph and Williams began the line while in college and presented for the first time in 2012. They set out on the path to becoming one of the leading menswear designer. Their fashion-forward take on the metropolitan man paired with smart usage of European tailoring and American heritage lends itself a collection that speaks to every man regardless of his lifestyle.

“Understanding that our consumer has an already well endowed closet, we wanted to introduce a capsule of distinct pieces which enriched their wardrobe,” says Williams about versatile pieces featured in their capsule collection, which debuted in March, that can easily make their mark in a power meeting as much as they would a night on the town–Midtown meets Downtown.

What does the dynamic duo consider their strengths as a designer? A clear awareness of what is going on in the fashion industry paired with impeccable craftsmanship and a cohesive collection. “Each intricate stitch in a trouser, unexpected lining in our signature trench and use of quality materials is why we are staples in every man’s closet. We actually are our customer and design with the modern man in mind,” the duo explains.
