Walk-Up to the Debate

It’s round two of the presidential debates, with Sens. Barack Obama and John McCain going toe to toe in a town hall format —- a McCain favorite.

NBC’s Tom Brokaw will moderate tonight’s event which is being held at Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee. Brokaw will field questions from the audience and participants via the Internet.

As McCain re-injected character questions into the campaign with a recent attack ad and his running mate Sarah Palin raising Obama’s ties to 1960s-era radical William Ayers and to the Democrat’s former pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, the two are sure to duke it out over personal associations.

Not to be undercut, Obama’s campaign aired a video recounting McCain’s involvement in the 1980s Keating Five savings and loan scandal in which the Senate Ethics Committee criticized his “poor judgment.”

McCain asked Democratic contender Obama to appear with him in several town hall debates this past summer, but Obama declined. This is the only joint event of its kind leading up to the election on Nov. 4.
