What does Xavier look for in a student?
Our decision is based on SAT or ACT scores. [Students] are required to have a guidance counselor recommendation letter and official transcript and because we’re a private institution we don’t have to adhere to a strict cut off for those different things. We have a review committee who will review students for acceptance and its done on a case by case basis.
What advice do you have for students who might fall short of the minimum requirements, but still want to attend?
Just to test as many rimes as they need to. We take the highest composite score for the SAT or ACT. If they’ve retested since receiving their letter stating they weren’t accepted, they they’ve increased their test score they can possibly get accepted.
What advice do you have for applicants?
Focus on your core classes because we can recalculate GPA’s based on the core classes. We’re going to look at the number of English classes, histories, sciences and math courses. They need to focus a lot of their attention on getting better grades in these courses.
How does Xavier weigh GPA, SAT scores, extracurricular activities, recommendations and the college essay?
They’re very important in the fact that they are the factors that make a decision on acceptance. The average ACT score is 21, the average GPA is 3.0 and the average SAT is 1000 for verbal and math. They all are equal, they use all of them to make a decision. Some students, we understand aren’t good test takers. If a counselor writes a good recommendation on their behalf it will speak volumes about the student. High school extracurricular activities don’t play a factor. A college essay is optional, not required and not counted against students who don’t submit it.
