Skip the objective. Objectives are outdated and rarely used in today’s world of professional resume writing. The purpose of the objective was to tell employers what you were seeking, i.e. “a challenging sales position.” Instead, the objective has now been replaced with a career profile or a summary of qualifications which tells employers exactly what you have to offer, i.e. “accomplished professional with 10 years sales experience.” Your resume should include a concise yet quality career profile which clearly indicates what you have to offer, rather than just what you desire. Employers are far more attracted to a candidate who actually brings something to the table.

Privacy continues to be one of the top issues in sharing content on social networks. Recently, Facebook announced their new privacy settings and the redesign they are rolling out soon. Users started seeing the new privacy changes to the Web version Thursday, and the mobile roll-out of changes will happen soon after. An interesting question is what is driving the new Facebook privacy changes? Is it Google Plus or the need to provide users with a more contextual experience? The launch of Google Plus has intensified content-sharing privacy with their Google Circles functionality. The friendly competition with Google will hopefully continue to provide changes that will benefit the user. The other big plus is that these adjustments enable users to manage their profiles, which represent and reflect a portion of their online identity. ---Hajj Flemings

Seeking perfection in today’s business world is not a successful business strategy. This does not mean that the need for excellence, great customer service, and preparation and planning has to be left to chance. However, when you don't fixate on perfection it means you can move forward with a business idea without waiting until all elements are exactly right.

Don't get caught up in the Perfection Trap: the illusion that everything has to be just right before you will launch. It often serves as an accelerator that moves you beyond what is needed and keeps you from working smarter. It freezes you into over-thinking everything and talking yourself out of even starting. The other problem with trying to achieve perfection is that it is really a moving target.

Here are three Perfection Traps and how you can free yourself from their grip. ---Sheri Riley

There has been a a lot of advice for job seekers on how to conduct a successful interview. However, there hasn't been much focus on the toughest interview of all, the one you face when you are over 50. This age group has the highest rate of unemployment today, and the highest level since the Great Depression.

Interviewing can be especially challenging for job candidates over 50 because recruiters and hiring authorities can hold biases, and many are are not good at interviewing to start with. Many workers over 50 never really had to learn how to interview seriously for a job while out of work, or might still hold on to outdated standards when it comes to marketing themselves.

Here are five important strategies for the over 50 job seeker on how to ace the interview and use their age as an asset, not a handicap. ---Tucker Mays and Bob Sloane

Most job seekers include a laundry list of job duties and responsibilities rather than focusing on their accomplishments. Job duties are generally generic and standard for everyone in the same position, but your accomplishments are uniquely yours. If the employer interviews 10 sales associates, they will all have the same job duties, but you may be the only one who increased sales by 25% and was awarded salesperson of the month. So, focus less on what you did every day and more on what you actually accomplished. Employers will notice the difference.

One of the most important parts of the job-seeking or college admission process is the ability to provide quality references. If an employer or school asks you to supply them with references, it’s usually a clear indication that the testimony of those persons will play a big part in whether you get the job or get accepted. The old adage is still true: It’s not what you know, but who you know.”

With this is mind, references should be chosen carefully, strategically, and wisely. Consider these 5 tips the next time you submit the list of those who could very well make or break the decision to extend the offer. ---Aisha Taylor

Quitting a job you hate is easy, but walking away from a job you love is down-right heartbreaking. Leaving a situation like that is similar to divorcing a spouse, and as such requires some time to grieve, heal properly and move on in a healthy way.

I speak from experience. When I put in my notice to resign as managing editor of a popular lifestyle Website, I was sad, anxious and resolute. Chin up, dressed as cute as cute could be (just sayin’), I gave up a job I loved. It was time for me to leave, so I could pursue my personal writing and business goals.

Sometimes, moving on is a necessary part of career and personal growth. The break up between you and your job can amicable but painful. Check out a few tips for divorcing your job while still maintaining your sanity. ---Demetria Irwin

And making the most of each experience is key. "As a previous intern and internship supervisor, I’ve witnessed a plethora of students fail at optimizing their internship experiences," says Antoine D. Moss, Ph.D., educational consultant, NASA researcher and author of Learn to Intern CEO Style (Antoine Moss; $15). Moss came up with the Creator of Excellent Opportunities (CEO) framework, detailed in his book, and offers these tips for students who want to find long-lasting success in achieving not only current career goals, but making impressions that will have a lasting, positive impact:

Doing all the talking. Yes, Twitter is a great place to let people know what you’re doing. But if that’s all you’re doing, it’s not going to work. “You can’t just go on Twitter and type in the title of your blog post and link to it. Or you can’t just say, ‘Oh, look what’s new here.’ It has to be a conversation. And that’s what’s so amazing about Facebook and Twitter—that you can engage with your audience. You shouldn’t just post something and go on with your day,” Gregg says.

Words are key. Your resume should include as many relevant keywords as possible. Avoid using general terms like “good communication skills” and “team player.” Instead, use keywords that match exactly what the employer is looking for. For example, if you’re pursuing a career in marketing, words like “research” and “promotions” will jump off the page and of course show up more on job search engines. Don’t waste precious resume space by using overused words that don’t mean much.

Yet another report, by BlessingWhite, a global consulting firm, notes that the number of North American employees determined to leave their positions has nearly doubled since 2008, from 7% to 13%. Less is more. Overcrowded, unorganized, and hard-to-read resumes are likely to be placed at the bottom of the pile or moved into the trash bin on employers’ e-mail accounts. A well-formatted yet modest resume is more likely to get noticed than one with several fonts, overcrowding, confusing templates and inappropriate graphics. Your resume should be detailed yet concise while avoiding typical resume mistakes. Employers prefer easy-to-read resumes that clearly outline your skills and accomplishments.
