Black CPA Centennial Unveils Inaugural ’40 Under 40′ Black CPA Award Recipients

The Black CPA Centennial announced the inaugural list of “40 Under 40” Black CPAs, which recognizes outstanding leaders across the country who are advancing diversity and inspiring positive change in the profession.

2021 marks the centennial anniversary of the first Black CPA in the United States, John W. Cromwell Jr. The Black CPA Centennial is hosting a year-long celebration to honor the past, present, and future of Black CPAs. All recipients of the 40 Under 40 Black CPA Award will be honored at a virtual Black CPA Centennial Celebration on Nov. 12, 2021.

The Black CPA Centennial is spearheaded by many professional organizations, including the AICPA, the Diverse Organization of Firms, the Illinois CPA Society, the National Association of Black Accountants (NABA), and the National Society of Black CPAs (NSBCPA). According to NABA, less than 1% of CPAs in the country are Black.

“We’re extremely excited to recognize the next generation of Black CPAs who’ll build on the success of those who came before them,” said Todd Shapiro, president and CEO of the Illinois CPA Society, in a statement. “It’s our hope that recognizing the success of this diverse group of accomplished young CPAs will help drive momentum, encouragement, and support for others to continue to overcome adversity and inspire positive change in their personal and professional communities.
