Expat Life: Brooklyn Native is Redefining the Black Experience in Murcia, Spain

In Spain, many people just call things how they are and not necessarily with negative connotations. They call fat people “gordita” (and sometimes, even when you aren’t fat), they call black people black, they call stores run by people of Asian descent, Chinos. For us, it all seems so wrong, but for them, it’s the norm. Spain is a very homogenous society, so when they see someone or something different, it’s noted.

Can you give us the inside scoop on any of your favorite cities?
Nerja – It’s a beautifully small town with one of the most gorgeous beaches I’ve ever seen. It’s located in Andalucia, very close to Malaga. It’s truly an oasis by the sea that is surrounded by breath-taking mountains. It’s perfect for a true escape.

Madrid – I love Madrid because of the immense diversity there. It’s filled with culture, art, history and all of the amazing food in the world. Each walk down the street is a different experience and it’s a city that will inspire.

San Sebastian – San Sebastian is one of my favorite cities in Pais Vasco due to its different landscapes. I’m a big fan of the architecture and vibe in the “old town” of the city. During the summer, the beaches are also fantastic and filled with a chill surf culture.

Can you share three must-try dishes while visiting Spain?

  • Calamares, mejillones, pulpo or any type of seafood. Seafood is so fresh here, especially in the coastal regions. You’ll continuously find yourself coming back for more.
  • Torrija! If you have a sweet tooth, it is an absolute must. It’s more popular around springtime, close to Lent and Holy Week. It is a delicious recipe that can be compared to French toast. It’s bread soaked in milk with honey and spices and then it’s dipped in egg and fried in olive oil. It’s definitely worth breaking your diet for this one.
  • Clara de Limon. This is really simple, but it’s a mixture of beer and lemon soda. Even if you’re not a big beer drinking, it’s perfect and refreshing during the summertime.

Any inside tips on booking flights from the U.S.?
I  recommend using momondo.com to book flights. I can’t tell you how many cheap round-trip tickets I’ve booked from NYC to Madrid for under 500€.
