Imagine merging the book club concept and television viewing party concept. What if this new cultural interactive event was framed around the ABC hit series Scandal? It could be quite the social media phenomenon. Cultural architect Risikat “Kat†Okedeyi of LiL SoSo Productions, Inc., and Capitol Hill power couple Danielle and Aisha Moodie-Mills of the weekly politics and pop culture show Politini, will produce and curate a weekly Scandal Watch.
“This event is a tremendous way to catalyze culture and community in the new, fashionably political Washington, or Poliwood, as we call it,†says Danielle. Aisha adds, “Politini sparks dialogue that integrates our social, cultural, and political selves, so it’s exciting to construct a salon that galvanizes the enthusiasm of all layers of D.C.–Politicos, Creatives, and Social Entrepreneurs alike.â€
The Scandal Watch kick-off will coincide with the season premiere of the popular television drama (now in its third season) on October 3rd in Washington, DC. The event will begin with an exclusive live streamed videotaping of Politini, featuring a panel of political and cultural influencers who will turn a critical eye on Scandal to discuss how creator/writer Shonda Rhimes’ (also of ABC TV’s Grey’s Anatomy fame) multi-ethnic and multi-dimensional characters defy stereotypes and shift culture.
Scandal is the political thriller that debuted on ABC in 2012, starring Kerry Washington as lawyer and crisis management specialist Olivia Pope. The show takes place in DC and focuses on the staff of Pope & Associates as well as the White House. The fictional Olivia Pope is based on the career of real-life lawyer Judy Smith, former George H.W. Bush administration press aide, who also serves as the show’s co-executive producer. As the go-to woman for high profile celebrity/political scandal, Smith had a hand in making big problems go away.
The Scandal Watch will continue each Thursday through December alternating hosts who bring four distinct perspectives to the events: cultural, political, musical and style. Okedeyi, whose company combines culture with nightlife aesthetics, plans to build community by connecting real-life “Olivia Popesâ€, the fixers and influencers of Washington, through Scandal-themed entertainment.
“As cultural architects, LSP is committed to the practice of cultural entertainment,†says Okedeyi, who combined her background as a professor of literature with her events planning skills.”With so many “fixers” in DC, it only made sense to partner with the Politini show as a way to talk about the modern woman as portrayed by many of the characters featured in Scandal. Okedeyi also hosts a weekly online radio show, The LSP Effect, which airs live every Wednesday at 10 am on www.rocktheflow.com.”
Politini, a talk show on blis.fm produced and hosted by the Moodie-Mills, will present “SCANDALous Cocktails and Conversations†that examine the political and social impact of the show’s complex themes. Married in 2010, the Moodie-Mills also launched FIRE (Fighting Injustice to Reach Equality), a policy initiative at the Center for American Progress, which works to eliminate the social, economic, and health disparities experienced by LGBT people of color. Moreover, the political change agents pen together a lifestyle blog: Living, Loving, and Laboring OUT Loud or threeLOL.
The October 3rd Scandal Watch Series event will begin with an invitation-only cocktail soiree and live taping of Politini from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., followed by a “SCANDALous Red Carpet Affair†from 9 p.m. to 10 p.m. and the Scandal season premiere watch party from 10 p.m. to Midnight. The entire event will be live streamed and tweeted using #ScandalWatchDC and #ScandalDC.
