Black Officer Punished For Listening To Rap; Files Racial Discrimination Suit Against His Department

Officer Brandon Hanks is a well-known law enforcement officer, a bridge between the Black community and the Syracuse Police Department.

However, when Hanks filed a racial discrimination lawsuit against his co-workers for “extreme racism” he experienced on June 25. Days later on July 1, the department reprimanded him for posting a video of himself listening to rap, according to Syracuse.com.

Some might consider the department’s action as retaliation for the lawsuit, But Police Chief Kenton Buckner says the main issue is that a Black man was involved in using “racial slurs… in the language with our officer on a personal Facebook post.”

It is worth noting that Hanks was in uniform inside his private car, and the incident was discovered in February. The videos or social media posts in question are not on Hanks’ Facebook page, nor were they included in Hanks’ amended complaint.

The song in question uses epithets like “ni–a,” a commonality in most rap songs, which goes against the department’s social media policy, according to First Deputy Chief Joseph Cecile, who signed the letter of written reprimand addressed to Hanks.

“It’s pretty clear. Then for those who will say there are First Amendment rights, the law has been very very clear that there are some restrictions for law enforcement,” Buckner said.

Hanks’ lawyer, Jesse Ryder of Ryder and Charles Bonner, clarified that Hank was not the one who played the song in the car and said the department is retaliating against their client and is trying to make a big deal out of his musical preference.

The city Corporation Counsel Kristen Smith refuted any reprisal against Hanks’ ongoing lawsuit.

“As a result of social media posts that came to Syracuse Police Department’s attention in March 2021, Officer Brandon Hanks was issued a written reprimand for violating the department’s social media policy,” she said. “The reprimand was approved by Chief Buckner in early June, and prior to the filing of the notice of claim by Hanks’ lawyers on June 23, 2021.”

For those wondering about Hanks’ lawsuit, Hanks said that he was denied a promotion to a specialty unit after a captain wrote that Hanks is “gang-affiliated,” according to ABC 9 Syracuse.

Prosecutors in the Pop Smoke Murder Case Won’t Seek Death Penalty for Killer

Prosecutors in the Pop Smoke Murder Case Won’t Seek Death Penalty for Killer

Just bubbling and ready to pop, a young Brooklyn rapper’s life was taken away as his career was taking off in California and one of his accused killers, who was the only adult at the time of the rapper’s death, won’t be facing the death penalty.

The death of hip-hop artist Bashar Barakah Jackson, known as Pop Smoke, shook the hip-hop world to its core. One of the accused murderers of the budding rapper is a 20-year-old who was the only person involved in the killing who wasn’t a minor at the time of his death. Corey Walker is one of a group of four defendants now facing charges in the death of Pop Smoke. The Brooklyn rapper was shot to death during a home-invasion robbery back in February 2020 at a rented Hollywood Hills home.

Death Penalty Off the Table

According to The New York Daily News, the prosecutors in the case won’t seek the death penalty in the senseless slaying of Brooklyn rapper Pop Smoke. “Our office is not going to be seeking death on this case, but we are going to be asking for a lot,” Deputy D.A. Hilary Williams had stated during the brief morning hearing that followed a judge’s recent ruling there is enough evidence for the accused defendants to go to trial for his murder.

Former O.J. Simpson prosecutor, Christopher Darden, who is now representing Walker, stated that the prosecutors’ decision to take capital punishment off the table “appropriate.”

“I am glad to hear the D.A. say this formally on the record,” Darden told The New York Daily News. “Corey Walker does not have an adult criminal history. He was 19 years old, not armed with a firearm and he did not shoot anyone. I don’t think the death penalty would be a fair or suitable punishment in this case.”

Walker is facing the death penalty if convicted, and three other underage suspects have been charged with murder and robbery, too. Walker confessed to using ski masks, gloves, and a police scanner, but oddly, the young man is pleading not guilty.

Kanye West Breaks Fashion Rule By Wearing Adidas Sneakers With Nike Socks, Sets Off Social Media

These days it’s not easy keeping up with Kanye West, who seems to make news simply by walking out of his residence. But the billionaire hip-hop artist has a way to keep us on our toes.

Case in point, the mercurial ex-presidential nominee was spotted this past Wednesday, July 7, at the Balenciaga 50th Couture Collection show for Paris Fashion Week. The fashion plate and talented music producer’s appearance had many folks scratching their heads when he was spotted sporting a face mask that fully covered his entire face; but as wild as that may be, many were discussing something else he chose to wear.

West, who at one point in time was signed to sneaker giant Nike and is currently involved in a deal with Nike competitor, Adidas, which produces his Yeezy line, was seen wearing his Adidas-branded Yeezy Foam Runners with Nike socks.
The issue? It’s practically unheard of to be seen wearing Nike with Adidas in any fashion, but, to see Kanye do it set social media ablaze!

Yeezy is truly unbothered by it all.
