PR Maven Jessica Dupree on Working As A Black Female Entrepreneur in Hollywood

With over 20 years of experience under her belt, Jessica Dupree is known as a strategic thinker, savvy businesswoman, powerhouse publicist, master networker, and relationship builder, and is well known for her ability to work a room. She has spearheaded PR campaigns for Grammy Award-winning recording artists and producers, entertainment executives, and film festival awardees. As a journalist, she has interviewed governors, Hollywood Walk of Fame recipients, business moguls, and music legends.

Dupree has forged a highly successful path in the entertainment industry as an entertainment and film publicist, producer, philanthropist, and journalist. Born and raised in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, she started singing and writing music at an early age as an outlet to express her emotions and inner thoughts. Dupree first captured the public’s eye as a soloist performing for the Lovewell Institute for the Creative Arts/Boys and Girls Club.

Going into adulthood Dupree was fervent in her belief that her gift would make room for her and bring her before great and mighty men and women. Knowing this she worked diligently, tirelessly, and faithfully in perfecting her gifts in leadership, communication, and service to others.

In 2014, Dupree moved from Florida to California unemployed with a one-way ticket, and a hotel room booked for seven days. Knowing her value and worth, coupled with a high sense of integrity and work ethic she later took the risk and a leap of faith to transition into entrepreneurship as founder and CEO of The Dupree Agency.

Please tell us about your journey into the world of public relations.

Jessica Dupree: I started out as a radio show producer and managed operations, created show ideas, and booked top talent to increase viewership and engagement. My major in college was Communications so I leveraged those skills as I transitioned into Public Relations. After successfully spearheading campaigns for celebrities and entertainment projects I got my first big break into film publicity and the rest has been history.

What advice would you give to someone that wants to break in to this field of work?

Jessica: My advice to anyone who wants to break into this field is to study books on public relations, branding, and marketing. Be prepared to work very hard because countless hours are spent pitching clients to media outlets and you’re literally responding to e-mails while you sleep. You must also be very creative and have strong interpersonal skills.

Name a time you felt like giving up. What did you do to persevere?

Jessica: I’m known for making power moves and setting up meetings with powerful people. There was one particular meeting that had a very serious and unexpected twist and turn of events. The circumstances were completely out of my control and I knew that only God could intervene. I persevered by going on an Esther fast for 3 days with no food or water. Afterwards the anxiety and depression lifted and God spoke to me and said that his favor would be upon me for a lifetime, everyone ended up moving on in peace. Without God speaking those words to my soul and intervening I don’t know that I would’ve had the strength to go on.

What advice would you give to your 21-year-old self?

Jessica : I would tell my 21-year-old self that long-suffering means to patiently endure lasting offense or hardship. It means to not surrender to circumstances or succumb to trials. Some of my biggest opportunities were preceded by the darkest seasons in my life. If we are not careful we will interpret these dark nights to mean that they are in the wrong place or doing the wrong thing. Suffering is a part of the journey.
