Zara Green was working for the administration of New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin when Hurricane Katrina hit and subsequently, the levees protecting the city failed, causing one of the largest and most costly disasters in American history. A native New Orleanian, Green lost all of her possessions in the disaster, and did not know the location of her father and brother for nearly two weeks. (Both survived.)
