(Image: Melissa Johnson/ got exclusive backstage access during New York’s Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week to talk to four of seven African designers who debuted their Spring 2012 collections in the Made in Africa: ARISE Magazine show.

Each designer infused the culture, history and richness of a diverse continent to showcase their own unique flair for mixing traditional with destinct prints and textiles. We caught up with four of the designers, duo Malcolm KLuK and Christiaan Gabriel Du Toit of KLuk CGTD; Pierre-Antoine Vetterello and Tsemaye Binitie, each of their respective namesake lines; and Lisa Folawiyo, of Jewel by Lisa, on how to make it in the business of fashion, and their must-have beauty and apparel items to keep their looks fashionably polished.
