Skilled orators are savvy marketers by definition. Take for instance, Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter. The rapper-turned-businessman can deem a product cool or passé simply by how he flips it in a verse. But does Jay-Z co-signing a brand in rhyme necessarily equal a boost in its respective sales? Here, BlackEnterprise.com takes a look at some products that have been name-checked by the influential orator over the years, and how they fared in the aftermath. —Alvin Blanco (Images: Getty)

When it comes to salary, know your worth: Wait to discuss salary after you’ve been made an offer. At that point, don’t walk into the situation thinking you should accept the base rate or what the company is offering you. You’ve done your research and know your skill set, so now you can gauge what’s appropriate for you in comparison to your industry. Present a salary range to your employer. They may decline your rebuttal, but chances are they will try to reach a middle ground with you.

Examine your career vision and develop a strategy: What do you want? Where do you want to be in five years? "After you have answered these questions and more, think about what you can get from your current job that prepares you for where you are going," Colemon says. "How might you gain more training? Can you work from home one day a week? Is there a new project, task, or goal that can be led by you? Tuition reimbursement? There are a million things to ask for, but what is relevant to your specific needs, desires and goals?"

Russell Simmons is a lover of books. Not only did he recently release Super Rich: A Guide to Having it All, but the mogul (who is featured in the February 2011 issue of Black Enterprise) keeps his bookshelves jam packed with interesting reads. I took a peek while waiting for the crew to get the lights set for our Power Player interview with Simmons for the Black Enterprise Business Report and took note of what was there. Along with three Buddha statues, an ’80s hip-hop bobble head (complete with pseudo-Kangol and Adidas), a photo of his daughters, Ming Lee and Aoki Lee, with Oprah, and a bonsai tree that’s seen better days, Simmons’ office shelves offers a window into his soul—and his favorite reads. Here are 10 great books on Russell Simmons’ shelf. Tastemaker that he is, if Simmons loves it, it’s almost guaranteed to please!--Caroline Clarke

In the corporate world, wearing a suit and tie, or a dress with heels, is the norm. However, techies and entrepreneurs tend to have their own style, preferring to switch things up a bit. A male geek will likely wear a blazer and some sort of graphic tee with jeans. A female techie may add color to her outfit with a pair of trendy earrings. At Black Enterprise we love how CyberSynchs founder, Amos Winbush III (pictured here), keeps his wardrobe business casual with a hint of geek flare.

Entrepreneurs are known to have many qualities—persistence, leadership skills and a never-say-die attitude, to name a few. But even with those skills, even the most successful entrepreneurs have made their share of mistakes—and sometimes catastrophically. Robert Jordan, author of How They Did It: Billion Dollar Insights from the Heart of America (RedFlash Press $24.95) spoke with 45 successful entrepreneurs to gain an understanding of what it takes to successfully launch and grow a business. Among those featured is Joe Mansueto, founder of Morningstar, who sold the company for $2 billion, Raj Soin, who launched Modern Technologies Corporation (MTC) before selling it to BAE Systems for $425 million, and others who have taken their companies public in billion-dollar transactions. To be included in the book, they had to launch, grow and sell a company for approximately $100 million or go public for at least $300 million and had to be self-made, according to Jordan. “So the range ended up so that at the low end, Viresh Bhatia sold InstallShield for about $78 million and the high end was Dane Miller, who took Biomet private for $12 billion.” But what mistakes did these multi-millionaires make along the way and what can be learned from them? Read on... —Alan Hughes

TED WILLIAMS: It was the first feel good story of the New Year: homeless man with a "golden voice" becomes a YouTube sensation overnight and receives a job offer from the Cleveland Cavaliers, a home, and an emotional reunion with his estranged mother after more than 20 years apart. For Williams, this was more than a come up, it was a second chance to redeem the man he once was, the man he lost to decades of drug abuse and crime. Williams' inspiring story has reinvigorated hope in millions of Americans that miracles do happen.

6) The rich versus the wealthy: Chris Rock says there's a big difference between rich and wealthy. (Remember? “If Bill Gates woke up with Oprah’s money he’d jump out a [bleeping] window.”) Maybe not; but White believes the true definition is when you no longer have to work for your money; instead your money works for you, your children, your grandchildren... "If you can invest and have your money yield whatever the prevailing interest rate is on that amount at the time, say 3%, and you can live off that interest, you're on your way to being wealthy.”

The Twitterverse is constantly buzzing with an outlined play-by-play on the latest in news, entertainment and trending topics—to name a few on the long list of online conversation starters. Of course, with all that chatter it's easy to block out a lot of it, but within all the noise there's still a large percentage that catches your attention in one way or another. To make sure you're not missing out on the valuable commentary and comments online, BlackEnterprise.com will now curate the tweets throughout the week that staffers think were worth taking note of, whether an expert, celebrity or even you masterminded the tweet. Timelines flooded with mentions about Oprah Winfrey’s newly-launched cable network, OWN, on Jan. 1. Although the initial sky-high ratings—approximately 1 million prime-time viewers—have declined, the network is moving towards its goal of providing the audience with 600 hours of original programming. In this version of BE Tweets of the Week, there was no shortage of tweets either embracing or throwing shade Oprah’s way. —Janel Martinez
