There has been a a lot of advice for job seekers on how to conduct a successful interview. However, there hasn't been much focus on the toughest interview of all, the one you face when you are over 50. This age group has the highest rate of unemployment today, and the highest level since the Great Depression.

Interviewing can be especially challenging for job candidates over 50 because recruiters and hiring authorities can hold biases, and many are are not good at interviewing to start with. Many workers over 50 never really had to learn how to interview seriously for a job while out of work, or might still hold on to outdated standards when it comes to marketing themselves.

Here are five important strategies for the over 50 job seeker on how to ace the interview and use their age as an asset, not a handicap. ---Tucker Mays and Bob Sloane

Most job seekers include a laundry list of job duties and responsibilities rather than focusing on their accomplishments. Job duties are generally generic and standard for everyone in the same position, but your accomplishments are uniquely yours. If the employer interviews 10 sales associates, they will all have the same job duties, but you may be the only one who increased sales by 25% and was awarded salesperson of the month. So, focus less on what you did every day and more on what you actually accomplished. Employers will notice the difference.

One of the most important parts of the job-seeking or college admission process is the ability to provide quality references. If an employer or school asks you to supply them with references, it’s usually a clear indication that the testimony of those persons will play a big part in whether you get the job or get accepted. The old adage is still true: It’s not what you know, but who you know.”

With this is mind, references should be chosen carefully, strategically, and wisely. Consider these 5 tips the next time you submit the list of those who could very well make or break the decision to extend the offer. ---Aisha Taylor

Louisiana born, Wisconsin raised and New York grown, Richard “Rico Love” Butler discovered his love of words at the age of 4. By 7-years old, he started coupling his admiration for written expression with music, which led to a profitable career as a songwriter. But his path to success was not easy. While attending Florida A&M University to obtain a degree in journalism, Love realized school wouldn’t be enough. Embarking on trips to Atlanta every weekend to meet with the execs of Crown World Entertainment, the go-getter got his break in the studio with R&B group Jagged Edge. But it wasn’t until 2004 when he got the chance to work with Usher—penning “Throwback” for the Atlanta–based singer’s diamond-certified album —that his dreams materialized. Since then, Love has written and produced records for Beyoncé, Michelle Williams, Keri Hilson, Chris Brown, and most recently Kelly Rowland for her No. 1 single “Motivation.” Love accomplished everything through his shear will and determination and now shares his six tips for being successful. —Amber McKynzie

Quitting a job you hate is easy, but walking away from a job you love is down-right heartbreaking. Leaving a situation like that is similar to divorcing a spouse, and as such requires some time to grieve, heal properly and move on in a healthy way.

I speak from experience. When I put in my notice to resign as managing editor of a popular lifestyle Website, I was sad, anxious and resolute. Chin up, dressed as cute as cute could be (just sayin’), I gave up a job I loved. It was time for me to leave, so I could pursue my personal writing and business goals.

Sometimes, moving on is a necessary part of career and personal growth. The break up between you and your job can amicable but painful. Check out a few tips for divorcing your job while still maintaining your sanity. ---Demetria Irwin

A professional seeking career success shouldn’t want those unfavorable labels to follow them on the job. It’s best to choose well fitting, tailored pants that aren’t too tight, too short, too long or too big and are complimented with a belt.

For too long women have been forced to figure out how to survive on their own. I wrote my book, SKIRTS in the Boardroom to equip women with the tools necessary to chart their own course. S.K.I.R.T.S. is actually an acronym that represents the characteristics that today’s woman must have to thrive in the boardroom, which ultimately represents any place of power that is male-dominated---a place where decisions are made and where you have a chance to show what you're made of. While it may change at different stages of your life, the boardroom is your playing field. It's also a place where the good ‘ole boys' network has, and continues to, flourish. It is time for the ladies to take their seats in the executive suite. So how do you position yourself to thrive in and out of the boardroom? Here seven savvy qualities that today’s S.K.I.R.T.S. must possess to go to the next level. (Pay attention, fellas---you can learn some fabulous tips, too!)---Marshawn Evans

Find a Program Many returning and non-traditional students are not in the same position as first-year undergraduates. With families, full-time jobs, and various financial responsibilities to maintain, full-time programs aren’t always an option. Since finding a program that meets these prospective students’ needs is imperative, universities and colleges offer evening, part-time and weekend programs as great alternatives. For people just looking to improve their skills and not enroll in a degree program, institutions do offer non-degree options.

Doing all the talking. Yes, Twitter is a great place to let people know what you’re doing. But if that’s all you’re doing, it’s not going to work. “You can’t just go on Twitter and type in the title of your blog post and link to it. Or you can’t just say, ‘Oh, look what’s new here.’ It has to be a conversation. And that’s what’s so amazing about Facebook and Twitter—that you can engage with your audience. You shouldn’t just post something and go on with your day,” Gregg says.
