Megan Thee Stallion And The Importance Of Reading Your Contract

Megan Thee Stallion, born Megan Jovon Ruth Pete, has been on fire lately with numerous hits and collaborations with Gucci Mane, Nicki Minaj, and Normani just to name a few. Despite her amazing success, the Houston- based rapper let her fans know that they may not be hearing music from her anytime soon thanks to her label contract.

The “Fever” rapper went on Instagram Live to vent about troubles with her label, 1501 Entertainment owned by baseball player Carl Crawford. 1501 Entertainment is holding off on the release of her debut album, Suga, due to the rapper asking for a re-negotiation of her contract. Pete claims that when she signed her management deal with Jay-Z’s Roc Nation, executives let her know that there were some details in her initial deal that needed to be brought to her attention.

“I was like 20, and I didn’t know everything that was in that contract,” Pete told followers on IG Live. “So when I got with Roc Nation, I got management, real management and real lawyers. They were like, ‘Do you know that this is in your contract?’ And I was like, ‘Oh, damn, that’s crazy. No, I didn’t know.'”

When she asked 1501 to go over her contract, the label retaliated by placing a hold on her new music releases. “Soon as I said, ‘I want to renegotiate my contract,’ everything went left. It all went bad,” she continued. “So now they tellin’ a b—h she can’t drop no music. It’s really just, like, a greedy game.”

Megan isn’t the first artist who later found out that they had gotten a bad contract as many popular artists have had to deal with signing contracts that weren’t in the best interest of their music. The industry has a notorious reputation for giving new artists bad deals that often leave the artist with nothing and sometimes even in debt to the label while executives make millions off their hit singles.

The rapper went on Twitter to clarify that although she read her initial contract, she didn’t fully understand what she was agreeing to at the time.

1501 Entertainment has yet to respond to the allegations.
