Plagiarism Claims Against Harvard Professor Slammed As Baseless Amid Intensifying Attacks On Black Scholars

Conservative activist Christopher Rufo’s accusations toward Professor Christina J. Cross have been denied by the authors of the works he claims she plagiarized.

After conservative activist Christopher Rufo accused sociology professor Christina J. Cross, a Black female professor at Harvard, of plagiarism, university administration came to her defense and called the pattern of attacks “troubling.”

As The Harvard Crimson reports, Rufo made the allegations as part of a larger criticism of diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives in higher education. Rufo’s accusations reflect a common criticism from conservatives who believe that academia has a vendetta against those with a conservative point of view.

This marks the fourth time that a Black woman scholar at the prestigious Ivy League university has been accused of academic dishonesty, after Claudine Gay, Sherri A. Charleston, and Shirley R. Greene.

Rufo’s accusations toward Cross have been denied by the authors of the works he accuses Cross of plagiarizing, including Stacey J. Bosick, the current associate vice president of academic affairs at Sonoma State University.

Bosick gave a written statement to the Crimson indicating that she was concerned about “the disproportionate surveillance of Black scholarship.”

Jonathan Bailey, an expert on plagiarism, said in an interview that the arguments presented by Rufo and others are not at all concerned with anything academic, but were essentially political stunts.

“It’s using plagiarism allegations, not to address issues of academic or research integrity, but rather to address political or social grievances that a person may have.”

Bailey continued, “It’s putting the focus not on the cases that actually impact science and impact academia” but those which “are cases of political expediency.”

Sociology department chair Frank Dobbin was sent an anonymous letter which detailed the belief that sociology professor Christina J. Cross had engaged in plagiarism. Dobbin responded to the letter in a statement issued on March 24, calling the accusations “bogus.”

“We find these bogus claims to be particularly troubling in the context of a series of attacks on Black women in academia with the clear subtext that they have no place in our universities,” Dobbin wrote. “Dr. Cross is a brilliant scholar who we ranked at the very top of our pool of applicants when we hired her, from a field of hundreds, on the strength of her scholarship.”

https://twitter.com/donmoyn/status/1770807829873483985?t=fECkOMeURh7J2sx2QsRCMw&s=19

In addition to Dobbin, 18 scholars who head large and publicly funded datasets described the accusations of Cross as “false.” One of those datasets, the Panel Study of Income Dynamics, was named as a source that Cross plagiarized.

In a statement released on March 21, the scholars said her description of the datasets was not plagiarism, but a good, solid research practice.

“It’s not simply that Dr. Cross’s writings do not constitute plagiarism,” the scholars wrote. “Rather, her description of a large public dataset in this standardized way is simply good research practice—helping to ensure replicability and transparency.”

Rufo’s attacks on Cross were framed by Donald Moynihan, the chair of Georgetown University’s public policy school, as an attempt to intimidate Black scholars of race in a Substack post.

Further, Moynihan described Rufo’s playbook and implicated Twitter/X owner Elon Musk as one of the main drivers of the spread of Rufo’s claims. He also later discusses the “obsessive” coverage of outlets like the New York Times as a co-producer of Rufo’s plagiarism “brand.”

“The game plan is simple. Selectively target scholars who study race, who will be primarily scholars of color. Launch an anonymous accusation. Then report on this as newsworthy in right wing media, hoping the mainstream media will pick it up. On social media it will find its own audience. In less than 24 hours, Rufo’s post had over 800,000 views, boosted by far right luminaries such as the guy who pushed the Pizzagate conspiracy. Elon Musk replied to one of Rufo’s post, which dramatically increases the spread of the false claims.”

Conflict Management: How To Have Difficult Conversations In The Workplace

For many, confrontation is an anxiety-ridden, arduous task. We often avoid confrontation out of fear, not wanting to look bad and because its seems overwhelming.

Originally Published Jun. 25, 2014

If you’ve lived long enough, you’ve either been the recipient or had the painstaking duty of initiating a difficult conversation. Whether in business or even in your personal life, difficult conversations come with the territory. For many, confrontation is an anxiety-ridden, arduous task. We often avoid confrontation out of fear, not wanting to look bad and because its seems overwhelming.

Here’s a fact: It is better to address an issue as it arises sooner rather than later. Too often we sweep those difficult conversations under the rug. Unfortunately, the simple matter all of sudden becomes this huge elephant in the room. The end result is often more tragic than it has to be. To avoid such pitfalls, here are some quick tips and insights I’d like to share as a life coach on how to have difficult conversations.

Change your mind set regarding confrontation.

Confrontation is NOT a negative word. Moreover, in order to have healthy viable relationships we must be able to speak up when issues arise. We settle for the passive-aggressive mindset which in the end always does more damage than good.

Remember silence gives consent.

We often are afraid to speak up because we fear that we may lose the relationship. However, the longer we remain silent about a problem we have with others, we are unknowingly giving them permission to continue to act in unacceptable ways.

Look for the Win/Win.

No matter if you are right in the matter, look for a way where both parties benefit. It’s not about being right. Instead it’s about being righteous. Look for a teachable moment to be shared between the both of you. If the end result is a dissolved relationship, then at least both parties can walk away with tools to grow.

Check your attitude.

Have the right attitude and approach. Your attitude determines your approach, which will ultimately lead to success or failure. Take some time to really check your emotions and attitude. It’s important to know that folks listen to how a message is delivered more often than the message itself. You always win when you have a peaceful and calming approach.

Remember we have the ability to not only change our world, but the world as a whole … BE GREAT!!

US Vice President Kamala Harris, Puerto Rico

Kamala Harris Affirms U.S. Support To Puerto Rico

The five-hour trip to Puerto Rico included a visit to Canóvanas neighborhood, commemoration for the abolition of slavery, and a fundraiser.

Vice President Kamala Harris touched down in Puerto Rico on Friday afternoon for her inaugural visit to the island since assuming office in 2021.

The five-hour trip aimed to spotlight President Joe Biden’s dedication to aid Puerto Rico’s recuperation from several natural disasters and the COVID-19 pandemic. NBC News reported that a prime focus was on showcasing the administration’s expenditures to support the island’s infrastructure and economic revitalization endeavors.

Harris’ visit included surveying a Canóvanas neighborhood that received federal housing funds authorized by the Biden administration to reconstruct the homes of nearly 6,300 islanders following Hurricane Maria’s 2017 devastation. Harris proclaimed, “We’re making a difference,” as she delivered a speech outside the renovated home of a hurricane survivor in Canóvanas. She delineated the administration’s $140 billion total allocation across various Puerto Rican sectors like education and disaster relief and accentuated financing for small enterprises, innovators, infrastructure, and renewable energy initiatives.

Harris joined community figures and artisans in San Juan to commemorate the 151st anniversary of the island’s abolition of slavery. The trip prompted both protests over the administration’s foreign policy positions and counter-protests from pro-statehood advocates. According to the president of Puerto Rico’s Democratic Party, Charlie Rodríguez, Harris’ visit reiterates Biden’s initial policies of “staying focused on Puerto Rico during his term.”

Before she departed the island, Harris also attended a Biden Victory Fund fundraising event at an apartment complex owned by investor Nicholas Prouty, who has donated to several Democratic campaigns since around 2008. Rodríguez emphasized the importance of elected officials participating in fundraisers. “There is no doubt that there are a number of people in Puerto Rico who are in a better position to be able to contribute generous amounts, within the framework of what’s allowed by federal law, and to give those types of donations,” Rodríguez said.

Although islanders cannot partake in presidential elections, they can participate in party primaries that elect candidates. Republicans will vote on April 21, while the Democratic primary will take place on April 28.

Word-Of-Mouth Is Still How To Get Customers

Here are four simple steps you can take to increase and leverage word-of-mouth about your product or service.

Originally Published June 5, 2014

Word of mouth is still the number one way to get customers. Small businesses are all about the personalized approach. It’s not about casting a wide net, but rather about connecting with a select number of customers, enlisting their trust and loyalty, and having that positive impression spill over among their circle of friends and colleagues. Here are four steps you can take to increase and leverage word of mouth about your product or service.

Check your business in Google and Bing at least once a month.

Even if search engines weren’t the number-two way customers have of learning about a small business, keep in mind that word of mouth spreads online as well as offline today. Your customers are online today, and even if you run a local brick-and-mortar business, chances are they check you out online. You can fix many negative impressions, such as customer complaints or negative reviews. But first you have to know about them—and not be blindsided or ignore them because they’re too painful to confront. Once you know about them, you can contact the customer, leave unemotional explanations if the information looks incorrect, or seek out more positive reviews to convey a more balanced impression.

Conduct customer surveys to learn what your customers REALLY think.

The Net Promoter system asks on a scale of one to 10, “How likely is it that you’d recommend us to your friends and colleagues?” The ones who are very positive are called Promoters. The ones who are negative are called Detractors. Net them out, and you have a Net Promoter score. Today, with online survey tools (some of which are integrated with the software that manages your house email list), it’s not hard to discover and keep track of your Net Promoter score. Increasing your Net Promoter score gives you something for your team to rally around and set improvement goals. Start measuring and analyzing. Discover what is making Detractors out of some and Promoters out of others. You want to understand what your customers value so much that they are wildly enthusiastic about your business.

Communicate and reinforce to employees the value of raving fans.

If you spend a lot of time focusing on solving negative complaints, you may be inadvertently sending a signal that customer service only matters when there’s a complaint. Instead, you should be sending signals to get ahead of the curve. Customer service matters before someone gets upset, when you have the opportunity to turn someone into that raving fan of your company. Spend some time explaining to employees where most new customers come from and how valuable it is to have existing customers who love your company.  Don’t assume that your employees actually pick up on that.  Show your appreciation publicly when they go above and beyond to delight customers. Your employees at all levels need to hear the message repeatedly. They need to believe that YOU believe it.

Create easy ways for customers to share word of mouth.

This is where traditional marketing and advertising can support and amplify customer word-of-mouth. Consciously develop initiatives that get happy customers talking. Make it easy for them to share their positive impressions. Also, make it easy for existing customers to refer their friends, family and colleagues. Some tactics that can help are:

  • Specifically ask for testimonials
  • Provide referrals cards
  • Offer refer a friends links on newsletters
  • Suggest easy ways to leave testimonials. For instance, invite a customer on to a live Google Hangout or Skype call, and video a brief testimonial. Or ask them to leave a brief star review on your Facebook Page or Google+ Page.

Bowling Alley Owners Where Migos’ Takeoff Died Contest $1M Lawsuit

The late rapper's mother brought on the legal filing in 2023, claiming the venue failed to protect guests by not requiring additional security.

The owners of the Houston bowling alley where Migos’ member Takeoff was killed are fighting to dismiss a $1 million wrongful death lawsuit filed by the late rapper’s mother, Titania Davenport.

The owners of 810 Billiards and Bowling seek their own legal action for the lawsuit’s dismissal, according to Radar Online. Davenport requests $1 million in damages for their negligence. The owners deny any wrongdoing on their part regarding the rapper’s death.

According to the lawsuit, Takeoff arrived to an event at the venue in November 2022. However, the owners failed to protect guests by not requiring additional security, which Davenport claims led to her son’s death. The lack of security and the Migos’ members presence, including Quavo, prompted an uncontrolled crowd.

The owners did not provide industry standard measures and “security considerations” for after-hours engagement for the invited celebrities, the lawsuit claims. Davenport said other attendees acted recklessly in an effort to intimidate her son; the lawsuit detailed Takeoff as “an innocent bystander” caught in the cross-fire of a preventable shootout.

810 Houston LLC responded that “ample evidence exists” toward the man allegedly responsible for shooting Takeoff being liable for the damages. Police arrested Patrick Xavier Clark a month after the shooting.

“There is a reasonable probability that the occurrence in question as well as the damages complained of were proximately caused, in whole or in part, by unknown criminals who participated in unlawful gambling and/or the illegal possession of firearms,” the owners explained in their response.

They also argued that Takeoff’s involvement in illegal gambling made him liable in his own death.

“Defendant is not liable to Plaintiffs because Plaintiff’s own acts or omissions proximately caused or contributed to Plaintiff’s injuries,” as detailed in their response.

Clark remains out on bond before his trial.

How To Unclutter Your Mind

Having a clear mind set is vital to us thriving not only in business, but in life.

Originally Published June 18, 2014

What happens when we have too many programs opened up on our computers? The computer starts to operate at a slower pace. The same applies to our mental computers—our minds. We live in a time where it’s commonplace to have a plethora of things going on simultaneously. However, it still doesn’t take away from the fact that we are human and one of our most basic needs to function is to have a peaceful mind. The reality is this—the more cluttered our minds are, the more cluttered and chaotic our lives will be. Having a clear mind set is vital to us thriving not only in business, but in life. The truly successful life is a balanced life.

Keep your environment clean

As simple as that sounds, it’s very important. Our surroundings are often a direct reflection of what’s going on inside and mentally. The physical act of cleaning is a cathartic experience that brings a sense of accomplishment, ease, and is symbolic for picking up the clutter in our lives.

No matter how chaotic your life may be, you have at least five to 10 minutes to still yourself and sit in total silence. It is often in silence where we begin to see clarity manifest. Without clarity no task or dream will ever be accomplished.  Silence also provides serenity and quells any anxiety one could be experiencing. This exercise can be done anytime during the day. Start out with five minutes and slowly begin to increase it.

Create a map of all the things that are cluttering your mind. Place them in order of importance. Come up with a plan to attack each task one by one. Please exercise patience. This is an exercise to ease the angst and craziness that often occurs with a cluttered mind.

The benefits of exercise are limitless. The endorphins released during exercise provide clarity, creativity, and energy. All are needed for optimal mental health and acuity.

Almost everyone has a smartphone with a decent camera on it. Take some time to pour out your thoughts. The great thing is it doesn’t have to make sense nor does it have to be pretty or refined. This is an exercise in brain dumping. Moreover, get rid of everything that is vying for space in your mind.

Give yourself a break

The easiest yet hardest thing for most to do is to take a time out. We often think we are missing out and should always be doing something. This notion often leads to mental overload, and in the end it usually does more damage than good. Allow yourself some time to just do nothing. Watch some TV, read a book, cook, or go for a walk. Do something every day that has nothing to do with the weight of the thoughts going through your mind.

Kyle Rittenhouse, University of Memphis, Protest

Kyle Rittenhouse Allegedly Booed Off Stage At University Speaking Engagement, He Calls It Fake News

Following the controversial acquittal of felony charges for fatally shooting two people at a Black Lives Matter protest in 2020, Rittenhouse has become a gun rights advocate.

Following a confrontation at the University of Memphis, students allegedly booed Kyle Rittenhouse during a scheduled speaking engagement on campus. The planned speech quickly transformed into a hasty question-and-answer session, culminating in Rittenhouse being swiftly escorted offstage.

As CBS News reports, Rittenhouse was invited as a speaker by the University of Memphis chapter of Turning Point USA, a conservative group run by Charlie Kirk, who has been accused of making several racially inflammatory comments.

Rittenhouse has become a gun rights advocate following the controversial acquittal of felony charges he faced for fatally shooting two and injuring another at a Black Lives Matter protest in 2020. Rittenhouse, who was 17 at the time of the shootings, traveled to the protest with an AR-15 in tow after a Kenosha, Illinois-based militia called for help protecting businesses during protests.

Rittenhouse’s relationship with Turning Point goes back to 2021, when they quickly began positioning him as a rising star in the organization following his acquittal. At the time, Ashley Pratte Oates characterized the group’s glorification of Rittenhouse as “dangerous” in an op-ed for NBC News.

As Commercial Appeal reports, the University of Memphis said ahead of the event, which was held on March 20, that it could not legally stop Rittenhouse from making his speech due to the protections of the First Amendment.

“The upcoming event at the University of Memphis featuring Kyle Rittenhouse is not sponsored by the university. A registered student organization, University of Memphis TPUSA, is hosting the event,” a University of Memphis spokesperson told the outlet.

The spokesperson added, “Under the first amendment and Tennessee’s Campus Free Speech Act, the University of Memphis cannot legally prohibit such events from being hosted by a registered student organization.”

The event, which was met with criticism, morphed into a protest outside of the event. Students who attended the event characterized Rittenhouse’s speech as closer to hate speech than free speech.

https://twitter.com/ThisIsKyleR/status/1770677467394547748?t=Y6z9PsoS3cdmQ1xgFYxmJg&s=19

Franko Coleman, a University of Memphis student, told WREG, “They’re portraying him like this icon for the gun people.” Coleman added, “We already have enough gun violence in Memphis itself, so having this guy come here and spread racist views and also talking about how we need more guns on the street…I think it’s awful, just baffling, that they allow this. Because this is borderline free speech, but this is more toward hate speech.”

On his Twitter/X account, Rittenhouse said in a video that his evening in Memphis was “interesting” and questioned media reports that said he was booed off the stage, insisting instead that a hard cut-off occurred.

Contrary to his claims, however, are several videos captured at the event which depict a swift end to Rittenhouse’s speaking engagement without the audience being informed of the alleged hard cut off.

Protestors, meanwhile, celebrated the early end to Rittenhouse’s night, singing part of Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars’ hit song “Uptown Funk” after the event ended prematurely. Rittenhouse’s scheduled event at Kent State is currently facing similar criticism as his event at the University of Memphis.

A petition is currently circulating online regarding Rittenhouse’s appearance.

“As a member of the Kent State community, I am deeply concerned about an upcoming event hosted by student organization Turning Point USA, which will feature Kyle Rittenhouse as a guest,” Ally Greco, who is listed as the organizer of the petition, writes. “Rittenhouse is a controversial figure who shot three men, two fatally, during civil protests in Kenosha, Wisconsin, in August 2020. These individuals were protesting the shooting of a Black man by a white police officer.”

Teenagers Arrested After Nadia Vitel’s Body Discovered In A Duffel Bag In NYC Apartment

The body of Nadia Vitel was found in a duffel bag in a NYC apartment leading to the arrest of two teenagers.

The body of 52-year-old Nadia Vitel was found in a duffel bag in a New York City residence, leading to the arrest of two teenagers who were unlawfully staying in the apartment. The victim went to visit her late mother’s apartment only to find it occupied by the teenagers, according to NBC News.

Vitel’s body was uncovered on March 14 during a wellness check at the Kips Bay residence, with the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office confirming blunt force trauma as the cause of death. Nineteen-year-old Halley Tejada and a 16-year-old, whose identity remains protected due to age, were found allegedly unlawfully residing in the apartment.

Vitel’s late mother’s apartment, located at 206 East 31st Street, had been unoccupied for several months. Vitel visited the apartment early last week, prompting concern from her family when they did not hear from her for several days, according to Newsweek.

According to CBS News, superintendent Jean Pompee allowed worried family members access to the apartment on the 19th floor of the building on 31st Street on March 14, where they discovered her body concealed in a duffel bag in the front closet. They had become alarmed after being unable to reach her.

“The male pointed to the closet; he said he believed that there’s a body in the bag,” Pompee said. “And all of her clothes were down, so you really couldn’t see the bag. You could see partially, a little bit.”

In a significant development, Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny revealed on Thursday that the investigation into Nadia Vitel’s death has expanded to encompass events in Pennsylvania following a vehicular crash involving the two suspects observed leaving the 19th-floor apartment where Vitel’s body was discovered, according to NBC New York.

“The apartment itself had been vacant for three to four months prior. We believe that some squatters took the apartment over, and this woman came home to get this apartment set up and walked in on the squatters that were there,” Kenny stated, underscoring the initial complexities of the case.
