This Woman Created A Wellness App Designed For Black Women

For Mental Health Awareness week, BLACK ENTERPRISE is interviewing numerous individuals within the wellness community to talk about the racial disparities that affect the Black community in the hopes of creating a safe place to talk about mental health.

Meditation apps have grown more popular as more Americans begin to prioritize their health and wellness needs. Despite their popularity, many of these apps are focused on a predominantly White audience and do not cater to the specific struggles that people of color face, specifically in this politically-charged climate.

After learning to cope with the recent onslaught racial injustice and police brutality, Katara McCarty sought out to create a meditation app for women of color.

McCarty is the founder of EXHALE, the first emotional well-being app designed specifically for Black women and women of color. The content is separated into five categories for daily mindful practice including affirmations, guided visualizations, breathing, and meditations. In light of the police shooting of Jacob Blake and recent protests, McCarty is providing the premium version of the app for free in September.

BE: How did you get the idea to create EXHALE?

McCarty: During the beginning of quarantine, I was proactive and began to amp up my self-care. I did more things to get still daily, find time to rest, commit to moving my body, and meditate more often.

As the news began surfacing about COVID-19 hitting Black and Brown communities disproportionately, my heart became heavy. Almost simultaneously, while that was occurring, the video of Ahmad Arbery went viral. I remember feeling an overwhelming sense of sadness, grief, and hopelessness for my community. The weight I felt was not unfamiliar, as I have felt this before with other tragedies due to systems of oppression my community has experienced. As we were reeling about this, we heard about Breonna Taylor’s murder, and the George Floyd murder was videotaped and going viral.

What we were seeing wasn’t new to me, but it felt incredibly insurmountable. I began to ask myself what I was going to do. How was I going to lean into my community and help? I got still, tuned in to myself, and listened for the answer. After several days, I got it! I would create an emotional well-being app for Black, Indigenous, Women of Color. Putting in the app the practices I’ve adopted in my everyday life that have kept me centered and grounded.

I created this app for BIWOC because most well-being apps are predominantly White-narrated, White-owned, and are overall White spaces. The uniqueness by which BIWOC has to weave through life, I believe, calls for a unique and specific curation that speaks to us and the weight that we carry because of racism, anti-blackness, misogynoir, and all systems of oppression.

Why was creating this kind of service for Black women important to you?

The uniqueness by which BIWOC weave through life, I believe, calls for a unique and specific curation that speaks to us and the weight that we carry because of racism, anti-blackness, misogynoir, and all systems of oppression. BIWOC are some of the most marginalized in our society. I was also raised by two Black women who took me in and adopted me after my biological mother abandoned me. Creating this app feels like a full-circle moment for me as I specifically give back to the community who stepped up, took me in, and raised me.

Your service is free for September. What prompted you to make that decision?

We launched our app on August 25th, two days after the shooting of Jacob Blake. When I heard Jacob’s family speak, specifically his sister, I could feel their pain and grief. I decided that I wanted to make EXHALE completely accessible to be a resource for us as we continue to navigate our collective grief, pain, fear, anxiety, and trauma.

Why is it important for Black people to incorporate mediation into their daily routine?

According to the American Institute of Stress, deep, abdominal breathing reduces stress and anxiety. For just 20 to 30 minutes each day, “deep breathing increases the supply of oxygen to your brain and stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system, which promotes a state of calmness.”

Our parasympathetic nervous system controls the predominant state our bodies should be during downtime, which should be 80% of the time. It’s the natural state we should be living in when not in danger. Our heart rate slows down, our breath is calm and relaxed, our digestive system is stimulated, and our hormones are balanced.

Yet BIPOC are often living in what the body perceives as danger due to racism and other forms of oppression. Our chest is tight. We’re tense. Our breath is short, we’re poised to fight, fly, or freeze, and it is making us sick. It is imperative that we tap into our breath, to reduce stress, to tune into our parasympathetic nervous system, and to heal.

When we experience stress and anxiety, we can use the power of our breath to come back to a state of calm. Tools that provide guided breathing techniques and mediations help individuals harness our breath to inhale calm and exhale stress and anxiety from body.

Taking the time for ourselves and focusing on our breath as BIPOC is both an act of reclaiming our power and an act of resistance. We may not be able to control what’s happening to us outside of our homes, the daily microaggressions and racism we’ll face, but we can control our breath. Our breath is in the moment, now, and we can use that breath to ensure we’re not holding the oppression we experience in our body. Deep breathing becomes an active tool to resist the toll that racism has on our bodies and minds.

President Donald Trump Bans Diversity Training Calls It ‘Divisive, Anti-American Propaganda’

President Donald Trump has decided to instruct federal agencies to stop racial sensitivity and diversity training that tackled topics like white privilege and critical race theory. The president states that such training is “divisive, anti-American propaganda” according to a memo sent to federal agencies by Russell Vought, the director of the Office of Management and Budget.

Trump, who, along with Attorney General William Barr, doesn’t think the United States “law enforcement system is systemically racist,” is issuing this stoppage of diversity training less than 2 months before the presidential election.

The memo, in part, states that “employees across the Executive Branch have been required to attend trainings where they are told that “virtually all White people contribute to racism” or where they are required to say that they “benefit from racism.” In some cases these training have further claimed that there is racism embedded in the belief that America is the land of opportunity or the belief that the most qualified person should receive a job.

“The President has directed me to ensure that Federal agencies cease and desist from using taxpayer dollars to fund these divisive, un-American propaganda training sessions. Accordingly, to that end, the Office of Management and Budget will shortly issue more detailed guidance on implementing the President’s directive. In the meantime, all agencies are directed to begin to identify all contracts or other agency spending related to any training on “critical race theory/9 “white privilege,” or any other training or propaganda effort that teaches or suggests either (1) that the United States is an inherently racist or evil country or (2) that any race or ethnicity is inherently racist or evil. In addition, all agencies should begin to identify all available avenues within the law to cancel any such contracts and/or to divert Federal dollars away from these un-American propaganda training sessions.”

Delta Upgrades and Supports Black Passenger After She Was Harassed By White Passenger On Flight

Delta Upgrades and Supports Black Passenger After She Was Harassed By White Passenger On Flight

A Black passenger who was being harassed by a white passenger on a Delta flight who wore a ‘Blue Lives Matter’ face mask, was defended by the airline and even had her seat upgraded and received gifts from Delta according to USA Today.

Demetria Poe, CEO, and Founder at Scholar School LLC in Minneapolis, Minnesota, gave an account on her Facebook account, of what transpired on a recent flight when she was faced with racism from a white passenger who sat right next to her on a Delta flight.

Poe stated last week that it seems that the white passenger woman swapped her American flag face mask for a Blue Lives Matter on purpose once she realized she was sitting next to Poe.

“That woman was trying to entice me into an argument because there was no need for her to flip that mask in my presence,” Poe told USA Today. “She didn’t do it for anyone else. It was as if she was making a statement and wanted me to know.”

“It’s so ironic because I got on this flight to go to the ‘Commitment March,’ ” Poe said, referring to the “Commitment March: Get Your Knee Off Our Necks” in Washington, D.C., on Aug. 28.

She continued: “I’m marching for something that my grandparents had to march for, and I’m sitting here in the face of racism once again. I can’t escape it. Now I’m having someone who is trying to test my humanity and my history all in one breath.”

Poe said she was “grateful” that other passengers came to her defense and Delta’s flight attendants offered to relocate the white woman.

Delta airlines gave a statement to NBC News.

“The actions by our people in the air and on the ground are what really set us apart as a company bringing humanity to air travel.”

“Based on an idea from one of our flight attendants, Delta has designed an optional pin for our people to wear while in uniform in support of the Black Lives Matter movement,” the spokesman continued. “We have a lot of work to do for true equity to be within reach for the Black community, and it’s part of our culture to represent efforts our customers and our employees care about. For now, these pins are for our people and not available to customers, but our teams chose to include a pin for this customer as part of their gesture.”

President Trump Wants the Government to Defund Democrat-Run Cities

President Donald Trump has ordered the federal government to begin the process of defunding cities that are being run by Democrats. The president feels that the officials have allowed “lawless” protests and cut police budgets as violent crimes have recently arisen according to The New York Post.

Last week, Trump had issued a five-page memo ordering all federal agencies to send reports to the White House Office of Management and Budget that detail funds that can be redirected. He took to Twitter to state that his “administration will do everything in its power to prevent weak mayors and lawless cities from taking Federal dollars.”

In the memo, he states, “Unfortunately, anarchy has recently beset some of our States and cities. For the past few months, several State and local governments have contributed to the violence and destruction in their jurisdictions by failing to enforce the law, disempowering and significantly defunding their police departments, and refusing to accept offers of Federal law enforcement assistance. As a result of these State and local government policies, persistent and outrageous acts of violence and destruction have continued unabated in many of America’s cities, such as Portland, Seattle, and New York.”

Trump has instructed White House budget director Russ Vought to issue guidance in 30 days from Wednesday “to the heads of agencies on restricting eligibility of or otherwise disfavoring, to the maximum extent permitted by law, anarchist jurisdictions in the receipt of Federal grants.”

“American taxpayers who fund the great programs that our cities rely on deserve to be protected by their local city officials,” Vought told The NY Post.

“We are taking action by exploring all options to ensure federal resources flowing to lawless cities aren’t being squandered. The lack of law and order surrounding these riots, and response from local leadership, is a dereliction of duty. Our men and women in blue cannot be handcuffed by local leadership in their efforts to respond to riots and protect their fellow citizens.”

Kenosha Shooting Victim Jacob Blake Releases Video From Hospital Bed

Kenosha Shooting Victim Jacob Blake Releases Video From Hospital Bed

Much hasn’t been heard from Kenosha police shooting victim Jacob Blake since the young, Black man was shot 7 times point-blank range in the back from a white police officer in Wisconsin. Until now. According to BET, Blake, who is paralyzed from the waist down due to the shooting, has appeared on video to give a message to everyone.

He gives encouraging words from his hospital bed, “I just want to say, man – a lot of young cats out there and even the older ones, older than me, it’s a lot more life to live out here man,” he said. “Your life, and not only just your life. Your legs, something that you need to move around and move forward in life, can be taken from you like this man.

“And I promise you, the type of s**t that you will go through, staples, I got staples in my back, staples in my damn stomach, you do not want to have to deal with this s**t man. 24 hours, every 24 hours, it’s pain, it’s nothing but pain. It hurts to breathe, it hurts to sleep, it hurts to move from side-to-side, it hurts to eat. Please, I’m telling you, change y’all lives out there. We can stick together, make some money, make, make everything easier for our people out here, man because there’s so much time that’s been wasted.”

Civil rights attorney, Ben Crump, posted the video from his Twitter account.

Video footage captured showed an unarmed Blake being shot in the back seven times by a white police officer in front of his children as he entered his vehicle in Kenosha, Wisconsin 2 weeks ago.

This past Friday, according to Revolt, Blake made his first court appearance since being shot. He pled not guilty to a previous felony, misdemeanor criminal trespass, and disorderly conduct. The judge approved a $10,000 signature bond and mandated that he can only leave the state for medical treatment.

A pre-trial conference is currently scheduled for Oct. 21. The jury selection process is set to begin Nov. 9.

BE Mental Health Week: Our Complete Mental Health Resource Guide

BE Mental Health Week: Our Complete Mental Health Resource Guide

Mental health has long carried a stigma within the Black community that has prevented many from seeking out medical treatment.

According to a 2018 report by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, suicide was ranked as the tenth-leading cause of death in the United States with close to 50,000 deaths recorded in that year alone. In 2019 study conducted by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) found a 33% increase in suicide deaths across all age, race, ethnic groups from 1999 to 2017. Within that timeframe, data showed a 73% percent increase in suicide attempts by Black youths.

September is National Suicide Prevention Month. In conjunction with National Suicide Prevention Week, BLACK ENTERPRISE will be introducing Mental Health Awareness Week, which includes a series of profiles, insightful guides, and resources pertaining to fighting the stigma of mental health within the Black community.

Black Americans are more likely to experience trauma from racial encounters more than other ethnic groups. It is time to fight against the stigma by creating more safe spaces for those suffering to share their experiences. In light of the recent string of Black deaths by the hands of police officers—which have sparked nationwide protests in the midst of a deadly pandemic—it is imperative now more and than ever to take care of your mental health needs.

If you or anyone you know is suffering from mental health-related issues, please contact one of the organizations below for more guidance on how to seek out treatment.
