Meet The First Black Dean of the Oldest Law School In The U.S.

The Marshall-Wythe School of Law at the College of William & Mary based in Williamsburg, Virginia, is home to the oldest law school in the country and a part of the second oldest college and the first university to open in the United States.

The legendary school has made history again, electing its first African American dean.

The school announced the appointment of A. Benjamin Spencer to dean at the university. Spencer was already working as an accomplished civil procedure and federal courts expert with great experience in higher education. Prior to his new role, Spencer worked as the director of the Francis Lewis Law Center and as the associate dean of research at Washington and Lee University. He also served as a captain in U.S Army Reserve and argues appeals on behalf of the army.

Because of Them We Can reported that President Katherine A. Rowe spoke on Spencer’s appointment, saying, “William & Mary is thrilled to welcome Ben Spencer as our next dean of the law school. Since the beginning of the search process we sought a leader who values all three aspects of the law: the academy, the bar, and the bench. Ben brings that broad view of legal practice, together with a deep appreciation of the ethos of the citizen lawyer that has inspired the oldest law school in the country since its founding.”

Spencer said he is excited about the new role. “It was not until the hiring committee from William & Mary approached me back in 2003 that I gave any thought to becoming a law professor,” he said.

“I am tremendously excited that after all these years, I am finally able to join this wonderful community of impactful scholars. I am particularly enthusiastic about the university’s commitment to a whole-person, whole-university approach to learning and its commitment to understanding and meeting the most pressing needs of our time.”

Migos’ Quavo is Now a High School Graduate

Quavious Keyate Marshall better known as rap group Migos’ Quavo, can now be referred to as a high school graduate according to The Grio.

The Atlanta-based rapper has announced on his Instagram account that he had officially received his high school diploma in the midst of the coronavirus lockdown.

“Finally Can Say I Graduated High School Class Of 2020
We Lit 🔥
Now What College Should I Go To? 🧐

Before becoming successful as a recording artist, Quavo, who was once a star quarterback at Berkmar High School in Lilburn, Georgia, reportedly dropped out early to pursue his career in music full-time.

According to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, in 2009, the rapper was a senior quarterback who reportedly threw three first-half touchdown passes during a homecoming game. His performance helped to lead the team to win their first game of the season.

In celebration of getting his diploma, he, along with the rest of his group, released a single featuring YoungBoy Never Broke Again called “Need It” on Friday.

As the quarterback for Berkmar High School, the rapper held the record by completing 28 passes in a game back in 2009. He ended up finishing the football season in his senior year, but he dropped out of Berkmar several months before graduation.

“I’m actually involved in sports,” he told Business Insider late last year. “I played in and I’m a student of the game. I love the game. I’m from the game. The game been taken away from me due to decisions I made in the streets, the decisions I made in life, and I chose another route in rapping.”

Migos is Quavo, Kirshnik Khari Ball better known as Takeoff and Kiari Kendrell Cephus better known as Offset. The members, who are related (Quavo is Takeoff’s uncle, and Offset is Quavo’s cousin), were originally named the Polo Club.

Another Black Private Equity Banker Pays Off HBCU Students’ Tuition at Graduation

Frank Baker and his wife Laura Day Baker, gifted Spelman College $1 million to offset the tuition for 50 high-achieving graduates that had tuition balances and needed help.

Baker is co-founder and managing partner of private equity firm Siris Capital, and Day Baker is an interior designer and philanthropist.

“We are all aware of the headwinds that people of color — especially women — face in our country, the challenges of which are made even more apparent by the economic and health impact of the COVID-19 pandemic,” Frank and Laura Day Baker said in a statement.

“We hope that this gift will help lessen their financial burden as they start this promising next chapter in their lives and encourage them to persevere over life’s challenges.”

Baker has spent $250,000 this year to cover the tuition of students so they can graduate with no balances owed and he will spend no less the $1 million dollars the next three years to give other Spelman graduates the same benefit.

“The people who my heart really goes out to are women in their senior year who can’t afford it anymore and have to drop out,” Baker told Forbes.  “These are the most resilient people because if they run out of money their senior year, you know they were out of money their sophomore year and just made it work.”

This generous donation comes a year after Robert Smith agreed to pay off the student loan debt for all graduating seniors at Morehouse College.

“Robert was fortunate enough to go to Cornell and Columbia and him giving to Morehouse was a nod to the recognition that the majority of African-Americans going to college are graduating from historically black institutions,” said Baker, who graduated from the University of Chicago, in an interview.

“We need to make sure these schools continue to be viable. We are all part of the same community. It doesn’t matter if I went to the school or not.”

This Beauty Company Wants To Give Away 10,000 Hours In Free Therapy For Women Of Color Impacted By COVID-19

Since the spread of COVID-19, or the novel coronavirus, pandemic hit the country, many people have been forced to adjust to a new reality with the new stay-at-home order restrictions across numerous states and the closure of “non-essential” brick-and-mortar business closures. The severe economic loss has deeply impacted many across the nation causing millions of Americans to suffer from mental health issues. These two beauty entrepreneurs are looking to give back to women by reminding them to put their mental health first.

DRK Beauty was founded by Wilma Mae Basta and Danielle Jackson. The company specializes in digital content and community platform with the mission to support, celebrate, and empower women of color. In light of the novel coronavirus pandemic, the founders launched the DRK Beauty Healing initiative dedicated to providing 10,000 hours of free therapy to women of color across the country who have been severely impacted by COVID-19.

“The disproportionate impact of COVID-19 on black and brown communities is creating a mental health disaster that will carry on for generations to come,” said Wilma Mae Basta, founder & CEO, DRK Beauty, in a press statement. “Current mental health support for women of color is frankly not enough. So we decided to launch this initiative which is already providing much-needed help in our community.”

Our mental health is….NOW! According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, approximately 1 in 5 adults in the United States experience mental illness in a given year. However, the number of those who have equal access to mental health services is staggeringly low, especially for women of color. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In a study conducted by CLASP (The Center for Law and Social Policy) statistics showed that 19.1% of Black young women and 16.1% of Hispanic young women report that they did not seek mental health treatment because of confidentiality concerns. Confidentiality concerns, socio-economics, lack of resources and representation are just a few of the structural barriers that prevent these women from getting the help they need. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ With DRK Beauty Healing we hope that our mental health initiative will spark conversation and change in our community. We have always envisioned DRK Beauty being a place of nurturing and support. Now with the help of others, we can begin the healing process. Stay tuned for more details. #DRKHeals #empowerment #healing #communityled #mentalwellness #healthyliving #clearmindset #socialservice #ThisIsDRKBeauty #lifestyle

NFL Makes Changes to Enhance Rooney Rule, But Doesn’t Implement Draft Pick Incentives Yet

In an announcement earlier this week, the NFL introduced new policies that are designed to increase employment opportunities and advancement for minorities and women throughout the league and changes to its Rooney Rule.

“The NFL is committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion, which I believe is critical to our continued success,” NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said in a written statement.

“While we have seen positive strides in our coaching ranks over the years aided by the Rooney Rule, we recognize, after the last two seasons, that we can and must do more. The policy changes made today are bold and demonstrate the commitment of our ownership to increase diversity in leadership positions throughout the league.”

The league has made changes to the Rooney Rule.

The league will require clubs to interview at least two external minority candidates for head coaching openings and at least one minority candidate for any coordinator job.

Teams must interview one external minority candidate for senior football operations and general manager jobs. Teams and the NFL league office must also include minorities and/or female applicants for senior-level positions, including club president jobs

“We believe these new policies demonstrate the NFL owners’ commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in the NFL,” said Art Rooney II, Pittsburgh Steelers owner and chairman of the league’s workplace diversity committee.

“The development of young coaches and young executives is a key to our future. These steps will assure coaching and football personnel are afforded a fair and equitable opportunity to advance throughout our football operations. We also have taken important steps to ensure that our front offices, which represent our clubs in so many different ways, come to reflect the true diversity of our fans and our country.”

The previous proposed resolution regarding minority hires was tabled on Tuesday. It was previously reported that there were incentivized proposals that would give teams enhanced draft stock for hiring minority candidates as head coaches or primary football executives.

“Facts are, we have a broken system” said Troy Vincent, the executive vice president of football operations for the NFL, said via NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport. “The fight continues.”

Goodell agreed with the sentiment in a conference call.

“We’re not satisfied with where we are, we know we can and should do better. That’s why this package of seven initiatives is very significant,” Goodell said in the call, via Rapoport. “Our work here is not done.”

Police Chief Announces Retirement As FBI Opens Investigation Into Shooting of Breonna Taylor

Police Chief Announces Retirement As FBI Opens Investigation Into Shooting of Breonna Taylor

The FBI had announced last week that they have opened an investigation into the death of emergency medical worker Breonna Taylor, who was shot and killed in her home by police officers in March. Louisville Metro Police Chief Steve Conrad also announced that he will retire at the end of June according to CBS News.

“The FBI will collect all available facts and evidence and will ensure that the investigation is conducted in a fair, thorough and impartial manner,” Robert Brown, special agent in charge with FBI Louisville, said in a written statement.

Breonna Taylor was sleeping in her Louisville, KY, home, when three police officers forced their way in and “blindly fired,” killing her, according to a lawsuit filed by Taylor’s family.

The lawsuit states Taylor and her boyfriend Kenneth Walker were sleeping around 12:30 a.m. when plainclothes police officers arrived at the house in unmarked vehicles. The suspect the police were looking for lived on the other side of town–and was already in police custody.

The suit alleges that the officers forced their way in “without knocking and without announcing themselves as police officers.”

No drugs were found in the home.

The Courier-Journal stated that they requested a copy of the investigative findings that were turned over by LMPD to the FBI, but the agency denied the request Thursday, citing an ongoing investigation.

“Turning over the PIU investigation for the Breonna Taylor case is but one step in the investigation, which remains open and ongoing,” a department spokeswoman said in an email. “Prematurely releasing records for an open and ongoing investigation in a public forum could result in prejudice to the potential witnesses and has the potential to adversely color a witness’ recollection of the events.”

Louisville Metro Police Chief Steve Conrad has announced plans to retire at the end of June.

Mayor Greg Fischer’s office announced it in the wake of Conrad’s management of the department following the fatal shooting of Taylor since last week.

“Being your Chief has been the highlight of my 40-year career in law enforcement,” Conrad wrote in an email to LMPD employees on Thursday according to 89.3 WFPL.

“You all are weathering a lot right now and I know how challenging this is. Approach this as we approach all our struggles – as a team. Look out for each other. Show compassion to the community, even when it might not be shown to you. And remember what a privilege this job is,” he wrote.

Tennis Phenom Naomi Osaka Vaults Pass Serena Williams to Become Top-Earning Female Athlete

Tennis Phenom Naomi Osaka Vaults Pass Serena Williams to Become Top-Earning Female Athlete

Move over Serena, make room for Naomi Osaka! Osaka has just set an all-time earnings record for a female athlete in a single year according to Forbes.

The young tennis phenom has earned $37.4 million over the past 12 months from prize money and endorsements. That’s $1.4 million more than Williams has earned in the same period. The previous record was $29.7 million back in 2015 by Maria Sharapova.

The money Osaka has earned has put an end to Williams 4 year streak as the world’s highest-paid female athlete.  Williams annual pre-tax income ranged from $18 million to $29 million over that time. The 23-time Grand Slam champion has made nearly $300 million over the course of her career.

“To those outside the tennis world, Osaka is a relatively fresh face with a great back story,” David Carter, a sports business professor at USC’s Marshall School of Business tells Forbes. “Combine that with being youthful and bicultural, two attributes that help her resonate with younger, global audiences, and the result is the emergence of a global sports marketing icon.”

“I’m really interested in seeing a young business grow and adding value to that process,” Osaka told Forbes last year. “I tasked my team with finding brands that align with my personality and my interests.”

Tennis superstars Sharapova, Li Na, Williams and now Osaka are the only women to rank among the 100 top earners in sports since 2012. Every year since Forbes started tracking data, the highest-paid female athlete every year has been a tennis player, with Steffi Graf and Martina Hingis the top earners for most of the 1990s.

Osaka spoke to Forbes about her most recent marketing campaign with Bodyarmor that was just launched last week, “I always look outside tennis to see how other athletes are training and conducting themselves,” she says. “It’s no secret that some of the athletes that I have looked to in shaping my career are non-tennis players. I’m a big basketball fan, and what James Harden has done in the NBA over the last few years has been amazing. He’s definitely one of the most exciting players in the league, so being a part of this spot with him was really fun. I was also lucky enough to shoot this campaign on the same day as Skylar [before the pandemic], so we got to spend some quality time together. She is really down-to-earth, and we got along great.”

NAACP Poll Shows African Americans Have Little Faith In Trump’s Coronavirus Response

NAACP Poll Shows African Americans Have Little Faith In Trump’s Coronavirus Response

A recent NAACP poll shows African Americans have an unfavorable opinion on how President Trump and his administration have handled the coronavirus response.

According to the survey, conducted by the African American Research Collaborative, 80% of the national sample of African Americans rated Trump’s performance negatively while 19% have a positive view. Eighty percent of respondents polled also said they want the country to hold off on reopening the economy until safety is assured.

African Americans, however, viewed their local governments more positively. Sixty-three percent viewed their mayor’s response positively; 62% said their state’s governors were handling the crisis well.

The survey polled 604 African Americans from May 1 through May 7 using online and phone responses. Its margin of error was 3.9 percentage points.

The approval ratings for governors that have kept states closed were viewed more positively than in states that have reopened quickly, potentially putting thousands of black lives in jeopardy. In New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania, 72% of respondents gave governors a positive rating. However, in Georgia and Florida,  states that have already reopened, 42% of respondents viewed their governors negatively.

People who took part in the poll were also asked who they trust using a 10-point scale. Doctors and nurses received the highest average from respondents at 7.85. Local hospitals and public health officials followed at 7.24 and African American elected officials were third at 6.96.

President Trump was one of the lowest on the list at 3.05.

Forty-one percent of respondents also said they are either working from home or know someone who is. This is an uptick from a March study that showed less than 20% of African Americans were telecommuting. However, 36% said they had lost a job or had seen a cut in hours or know someone who had.

The coronavirus has had a significant effect on African Americans who are more likely to live in high-risk areas, work low-wage positions, and have less health coverage.

Hip-Hop Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick Granted Early Release From Prison

Hip-Hop Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick Granted Early Release From Prison

Former Detroit Mayor, Kwame Kilpatrick, has been granted early release and will be freed 21 years earlier next month to home confinement, according to the Detroit Free Press.  Kilpatrick, 49, was originally scheduled to be released in the year 2037 after being convicted on 24 counts of public corruption including bribery, racketeering and fraud.

Kilpatrick, who used to wear a diamond stud in his ear, was dubbed the “hip-hop mayor.”

William Barr, the U.S. Attorney General, has ordered the federal Bureau of Prisons to release as many inmates as possible to home confinement due to COVID-19.  The coronavirus has been seen to spread rapidly in prisons where the opportunity to social distance is severely limited.

The Ebony Foundation have been champions of freeing the former disgraced mayor, partnering with several other black leaders to petition for Kilpatrick’s release. The National Baptist Convention of America, the NAACP, the National Business League, and several pastors of Black churches across the country had petitioned President Donald Trump to grant clemency to Kilpatrick.

“He said that he was being released,” state Rep. Karen Whitsett, D-Detroit, who has been pushing for Kilpatrick’s freedom said, adding: “I’m elated for him. … An out is an out. … He’s done his time. And I think, ‘My God, when is long enough long enough.’ ”

Whitsett, also told the Detroit Free press, that she confirmed with the White House that Kilpatrick is among 3,000 inmates who will be released. Whitsett had previously tested positive for the coronavirus in March and has credited Donald Trump for promoting hydroxychloroquine which she believes saved her life.

Current Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan was asked during a press briefing for his thoughts on the situation.

“Known him since he was in high school. When he was teaching at Marcus Garvey and going to law school at night at DCL, he’d study in his father’s office which was next to mine and his twins would play on the floor in my office,” Duggan told Fox 2 Detroit.

Duggan said his connection to Kilpatrick is “very personal.”

“He has a lot to contribute and if, in fact, the reports [of his early release] are true, I’ll be doing anything I can to help him get a fresh start,” the mayor said.
