Louisiana born, Wisconsin raised and New York grown, Richard “Rico Love” Butler discovered his love of words at the age of 4. By 7-years old, he started coupling his admiration for written expression with music, which led to a profitable career as a songwriter. But his path to success was not easy. While attending Florida A&M University to obtain a degree in journalism, Love realized school wouldn’t be enough. Embarking on trips to Atlanta every weekend to meet with the execs of Crown World Entertainment, the go-getter got his break in the studio with R&B group Jagged Edge. But it wasn’t until 2004 when he got the chance to work with Usher—penning “Throwback” for the Atlanta–based singer’s diamond-certified album —that his dreams materialized. Since then, Love has written and produced records for Beyoncé, Michelle Williams, Keri Hilson, Chris Brown, and most recently Kelly Rowland for her No. 1 single “Motivation.” Love accomplished everything through his shear will and determination and now shares his six tips for being successful. —Amber McKynzie

We’re already in mid-August and I just cannot figure out how this summer went by so fast. If you’re like me, you want to try to get as much out of these last few summer weeks as possible (officially, there’s only six left!!). This means attending every great to decent open air concert, BBQ, rooftop cocktail party, sailing excursion, pool party, beach day, and anything that sounds even remotely summer. In this installment of Suit Your Life, I’ll focus on those key summer items and garments I’ve used and plan to pull out again for every worthwhile activity we have left, including the Black Enterprise Golf & Tennis Challenge on Labor Day Weekend (Sept. 1-5) in Miami. It also doesn’t hurt that most stores are having their end of season sales so you’ll be able to rack up on most of these great items for up to 75% off. Thank me later. —Gardy V. Guerrier

It’s a known fact that a celebrity’s career rarely includes only one single job. Any multi-faceted entertainer—be it actor, artist, or both—learns fairly quickly that the key to climbing the success ladder is through constant diversification. Making money in various markets guarantees a well-rounded (and long-lasting) career. With the fickle tastes and short attention spans of most audiences, it’s only necessary to jump into multiple roles, bulking up pockets and fan bases equally. Many artists have made the migration from musicians to actors, film producers, authors and all around entrepreneurs. Such transitory career goals have allowed many artists to garner successes they never achieved during their time solely working as musicians. As part of our continued Black Music Month coverage, BlackEnterprise.com has compiled a list of 11 celebs that started out as artists and have since evolved into well-oiled self-entities. —Kathy Iandoli
