For too long women have been forced to figure out how to survive on their own. I wrote my book, SKIRTS in the Boardroom to equip women with the tools necessary to chart their own course. S.K.I.R.T.S. is actually an acronym that represents the characteristics that today’s woman must have to thrive in the boardroom, which ultimately represents any place of power that is male-dominated---a place where decisions are made and where you have a chance to show what you're made of. While it may change at different stages of your life, the boardroom is your playing field. It's also a place where the good ‘ole boys' network has, and continues to, flourish. It is time for the ladies to take their seats in the executive suite. So how do you position yourself to thrive in and out of the boardroom? Here seven savvy qualities that today’s S.K.I.R.T.S. must possess to go to the next level. (Pay attention, fellas---you can learn some fabulous tips, too!)---Marshawn Evans

Focus on Storytelling

What stories can you tell about your business. I spoke this week to a group of arts, tourism and cultural organizations at Cultural Tourism DC's annual conference in Washington, DC. (Members range from Smithsonian Institution Directors to jazz clubs to tiny art galleries and film festivals). When cultural organizations approach social media, they can't go for the hard sell because arts marketing is more about storytelling. Take a cue from these organizations and focus on the story behind your service or product. Can you give your audience a behind-the-scenes view? Can you offer online previews to build buzz before a big event?

Skip the objective. Objectives are outdated and rarely used in today’s world of professional resume writing. The purpose of the objective was to tell employers what you were seeking, i.e. “a challenging sales position.” Instead, the objective has now been replaced with a career profile or a summary of qualifications which tells employers exactly what you have to offer, i.e. “accomplished professional with 10 years sales experience.” Your resume should include a concise yet quality career profile which clearly indicates what you have to offer, rather than just what you desire. Employers are far more attracted to a candidate who actually brings something to the table.

Marjorie Perry is not your typical entrepreneur. The president and CEO of MZM Construction and Management Co., Inc. transitioned from being a Newark, N.J., educator to working in corporate sales for companies including United Airlines. She found the prime opportunity to combine her love of education and her desire for life wealth while working as an independent consultant, ultimately becoming partner at one of her client's companies, MZM. She then became sole principal of the multimillion-dollar company that now boasts a client list including Marriott Hotels and New Jersey Transit.

One doesn't get to that level of success without making a series of boss moves that will position them to attain ultimate success---especially in an industry dominated by men. BlackEnterprise.com caught up with Perry on how women can position themselves in their own entrepreneurial and career advancement pursuits. --- Janell Hazelwood

Seeking perfection in today’s business world is not a successful business strategy. This does not mean that the need for excellence, great customer service, and preparation and planning has to be left to chance. However, when you don't fixate on perfection it means you can move forward with a business idea without waiting until all elements are exactly right.

Don't get caught up in the Perfection Trap: the illusion that everything has to be just right before you will launch. It often serves as an accelerator that moves you beyond what is needed and keeps you from working smarter. It freezes you into over-thinking everything and talking yourself out of even starting. The other problem with trying to achieve perfection is that it is really a moving target.

Here are three Perfection Traps and how you can free yourself from their grip. ---Sheri Riley

Accelerate your payments and delay your collections. Towards the year end, purchase any needed supplies and delay any collections. Purchasing supplies will lower your profit thereby reducing the amount of taxes paid in the current year. Delaying collections will lower your income level, thereby reducing the tax amount owed in the current year. Although the taxes will not be assessed in the current tax year, they will be delayed to the next year. “I definitely do caution business owners because, if they spend too much at year-end, in January, some companies, they’re struggling to make payroll,” says Robbie Hampton. However, this strategy really only works when the company is profitable.
