Darius McCrary Again Arrested For Failure To Pay Child Support

He has outstanding balance of $52,788.04.

Darius McCrary, otherwise known as Eddie Winslow from Family Matters, was arrested in November for a second failure to pay his court-mandated child support, TMZ reports. The outlet reported that McCrary was booked on Nov. 27 on one felony count of failure to pay child support. According to court documents obtained by TMZ, the actor had an outstanding balance of $52,788.04 as recently as March 2019. McCrary pleaded not guilty at his arraignment, and the judge established that to bond out, he would have to pay $13,197.01 and agree to wear an ankle monitor.

Some states are considering eliminating the interest imposed by states on child support debts because they present an undue burden for Black men, and cases like McCrary’s represent the conservative argument against adopting that as a solution. For context on McCrary’s specific situation, in 2019, as a condition of his divorce from Tammy Brawner, he was ordered to pay $1,366 in monthly child support payments, which he is now accused of not paying.

According to TMZ, McCrary has claimed in the past that he only made $500 in a year, which rendered him unable to pay child support. Assuming McCrary’s claim is truthful, this places his child support drama into conversation with data from the Urban Institute that says Black men are sometimes assigned child support payments they are incapable of paying. In addition, according to the Center For American Progress, most of the money collected for child support goes to the state and not the families it allegedly collects on behalf of.

As part of their reparations plan, the California Reparations Task Force recommended in its report that the interest that the state charges be eliminated from back child support debt for Black Californians. According to The Telegraph, California’s task force did not call for the abolition of their debts in totality but noted that the exorbitant interest rates charged by the state had a disproportionate impact on Black men.
