Here’s Why The South Is Leading In Economic Freedom

Here’s Why The South Is Leading In Economic Freedom

Black Americans’ continued dominance in the South is deeply catalyzed by their personal and cultural ties.

Are you seeking economic freedom? Data show that the “promise” of northern cities is rapidly diminishing as the economic gains of the South have finally eclipsed it.

Personal and cultural ties deeply catalyze Black Americans’ continued dominance in the South. In recent years, Black Americans who migrated to the South, especially those settling in economically thriving areas—the central southern magnet states of Texas, Georgia, and North Carolina–have been disproportionately young and well-educated. According to a report published by Bank of America, the region’s lead will continue to soar after decades of strong population and economic growth in the South.

Whether you want to migrate to a new city or region, look at these five economic activities in the South.

BLACK-OWNED BUSINESSES ARE MULTIPLYING

Source: Source: LendingTree Study 2020

From Buckhead to Midtown, Atlanta ranks “peachy keen” with the highest % of Black-owned businesses at 7.4%. This is partly possible because of the multitude of programs and initiatives to support Black-owned businesses, including the Atlanta Business League, which provides resources and support to Black entrepreneurs, following “Hotlanta,” Washington, D.C. (7.0%), and Virginia Beach (6.8%).

THE NEW GREAT MIGRATION” IS A KEY DRIVER TO POPULATION GROWTH

The 16 states that make up the southern region represented 39% of the entire U.S. population as of 2022. The South also has the highest birth rate of the U.S. Census Regions. Between July 2021 and 2022, Florida, South Carolina, and Texas were among the nation’s fastest-growing states by population. The volume of renewed Black migration to the South is notable, as are the changes they bring to the region about youth and human capital. Young Black people of all calibers are drawn to education and networking opportunities.

THE JOB MARKET IS GETTING HOTTER

The South has the highest job openings rate at 5.6% and the lowest unemployment rate of any region. The South also led all areas in hiring workers, with a rate of 4.1%. For example, as of 2020, almost 60% of the Black labor force (11.8 million people) is accounted for in the South, McKinsey & Co. reported. Additionally, Atlanta has 10 HBCUs providing education, training, and mentoring for future Black business owners. Georgia and North Carolina have the second-most HBCUs.

BETTER BUSINESS TAX CLIMATE AND LOWER BURDENS

Data supports the Northeast states’ worse business tax climates and higher tax burdens. The average rank for Northeast states is 38, while the average for the six-state South is 17. This is a huge benefit for Black-owned businesses. According to the Tax Foundation, the average state and local tax burden in the Northeast is 12.4% of net state product. The rate is 29% lower in Texas, Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, and the Carolinas.

GROWING GROSS DOMESTIC PRODUCT (GDP) SURPASSES NORTHEAST

As reported in Bloomberg, the combined GDP of Texas, Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, and the Carolinas surpassed the GDP of the Northeast region, including Washington, D.C., and the 11 states from Maryland up to Maine. In 2022, the national GDP in the South was 23.8%, while the Northeast’s was 22.4%. The South fell short over a decade ago.

Although it is unclear what satisfies migrants or residents in the South, the Bank of America report suggests that people are intensely interested in their finances.

NYC Mayor Eric Adams Signs Executive Order Limiting Migrant Bus Arrivals

The order comes after 14 charter buses of migrants arrived in New York from Texas on a single night last week.

To control the arrival of migrants Texas Gov. Greg Abbott is sending to New York City, Mayor Eric Adams has signed an executive order limiting when charter buses can drop off migrants in the city.

The New York Times reports Adams’ executive order will require charter bus companies to provide 32 hours of advance notice before the migrants arrive and limit the times of day they can be dropped off.

The order comes after 14 charter buses of migrants arrived in New York From Texas on a single night last week, the highest one-day total since last spring. The migrant crisis has consumed the Adams administration, a reason why his approval rating hit a historic low of 28% earlier this month.

Adams held a virtual conference with Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and Denver Mayor Mike Johnston, who have also signed similar executive orders, to discuss the safety of migrants and getting the right resources to help them.

“We cannot allow buses with people needing our help to arrive without warning at any hour of day and night,” Adams said during the conference. “To be clear, this is not stopping people from coming, but about ensuring the safety of migrants and making sure they can arrive in a coordinated and orderly way.”

Those who violate the order will face Class B misdemeanor charges resulting in three months in jail and a $500 fine for individuals and a $2,000 fine for corporations. The New York Police Department may also seize buses violating the order.

Abbott has sent thousands of migrants to New York, Denver, and Chicago over the last two years, which has strained city budgets as millions have been spent millions to shelter and feed migrants. All three mayors again demanded that the Biden administration and the federal government step up.

“We cannot continue to do the federal government’s job,” Adams said according to the Times.

In August, senior advisor to the president, Tom Perez, met with Adams to discuss the crisis and ways to help. However, Biden administration officials and the Department of Homeland Security pointed the finger at Adams, criticizing him for having “no exit strategy” for the 10,000 refugees the city takes in each month.

It’s unclear if Adams’ executive order will work. Johnson signed a similar order limiting drop-off points and when buses can bring in migrants. However, Abbott has continued to send buses that are dropping migrants off in Chicago’s suburbs.

Nikki Haley, Donald Trump, presidential election.

Nikki Haley Fails To Recognize Slavery As Main Cause Of Civil War

She might have lost a voter with this one.

If Nikki Haley, the former governor of South Carolina, knows the official cause of the Civil War, she sure knows how to hide it.

The presidential candidate created a stir when she was asked by a potential voter at a town hall in Berlin, New Hampshire, what caused it.

“I think the cause of the Civil War was basically how government was going to run,” Haley said. “The freedoms and what people could and couldn’t do. What do you think the cause of the Civil War was or argument?”

The potential voter responded by telling Haley that he wasn’t the one running for President.

Haley stood firm.

“I think it always comes down to the role of government and what the rights of the people are,” she continued. “And I will always stand by the fact that I think government was intended to secure the rights and freedoms of the people. It was never meant to be all things to all people.”

When the questioner pushed the fact that she failed to even mention slavery in her response, she inquired about what he really wanted her to say about it. “What do you want me to say about slavery? Next question.”

It didn’t take long for Haley’s comments (or lack of) to make it to social media. President Joe Biden decided to answer the question for her.

“It’s not even a hard question,” tweeted Nikole Hannah Jones, founder of the 1619 Project. “It’s absurd that she felt she had to evade the question to avoid political liability.”

While talking to CNN’s Abby Phillip, Rev. William J. Barber said Haley’s lack of regard shows “why there’s not a dime of difference between these candidates and Trump.”

“It was about the oppression of Black men and women. It was about turning human beings into chattel,” he said.

Haley has had her share of controversy over the Civil War. During her gubernatorial campaign in 2010, she spoke to a now-defunct activist group, describing the war as being between two disparate sides fighting for “tradition and change” and referred to the Confederate flag as being “not something that is racist.”

NYC Woman In Car Fatally Shot During Shocking Ambush Captured On Surveillance Video

The 28-year-old mother of one was killed instantly by a bullet to the head.

A New York City woman was killed when several gunmen approached the car she was in, shooting several rounds into the driver’s side, striking her in the head and killing her instantly. It was all caught on surveillance video.

Three men ran up on a Black Honda sedan on a Queens street, targeting the male driver, who was also shot, but the passenger in the front seat, 28-year-old Clarisa Burgos, died after being hit in the head with a bullet from one of the gunmen. The troubling incident occurred just before midnight near 127th Street and Liberty Avenue in the Richmond Hill section on Dec. 26.

The 39-year-old unnamed driver tried to escape the scene before getting shot, as a video shows two men approaching the vehicle on the driver’s side. A third man came around from the passenger side to try to finish him off after the first two men fired through the window. As the driver hit the gas to get away, the three men ran away from the car. The man drove 2.5 miles away to a police station, the 103rd Precinct station house.

The driver caught six bullets in the torso and was taken to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center by paramedics, where he was listed in stable condition. The young mother of a 4-year-old son, Burgos, was declared dead at the scene.

“We’ve raised her in a good way, with love,” her aunt told The Post. “God knows what has happened to her.”

The relationship between the Burgos and the driver wasn’t disclosed, and the police have stated that they have no motive for the deadly shooting. There have been no arrests made in the killing.

Cam’ron’s Iconic Pink Range Rover: Sold On Facebook Marketplace For $16K

The vehicle was seen in two of his videos, 'Get Em Girls' and 'Killa Cam.'

If you were thinking of trying to buy hip-hop veteran Cam’ron’s famed pink car, you’re out of luck. It was recently sold on Facebook Marketplace.

According to Hypebeast, the hot pink Range Rover that was seen in two of the rapper-turned-sports commentators’ music videos (“Get Em Girls” and “Killa Cam”) was listed in the classified section of Facebook. The vehicle touted an all-pink interior and was sold in Alpharetta, Georgia. Killa Cam, who now hosts “It Is What It Is” sports talk show, bought the Range Rover in 2003 but sold it after only driving it for a year. He stated that the car became a distraction because people recognized it as his vehicle. The last listed price was $16,000.

The media outlet stated that Cam’ron listed the vehicle on eBay for $180,000 in 2004.

With the listing, the ad stated that the vehicle had 100,000 miles on it and also revealed that the interior was “redone” by a “former celebrity owner.”

“This is a beautiful Pink on Pink 2003 Range Rover HSE. This vehicle was custom painted and had the interior redone when it was brand new in 2003 by its former celebrity owner.”

The 2003 Range Rover was on the market for three months and was “meticulously taken care of by Finney’s Car’s,” according to the listing.

Whoever purchased it can be proud to know that the vehicle is tied to one of the hosts of the new sensational sports program, “It Is What It Is,” featuring former Bad Boy recording artist Ma$e, also from Harlem. The program also features former Buffalo Bills Hall of Fame running back OJ Simpson, and the show just added another New York City legend, former New York Knicks basketball player Mark Jackson.

Michigan Supreme Court, Donald Trump, ballot, presidential election

Michigan Supreme Court Allows Donald Trump To Remain On Primary Ballot

The Michigan Supreme Court will keep Donald Trump on its primary ballot for the upcoming presidential election.

In a controversial move, the Michigan Supreme Court has ruled that former President Donald Trump’s name will appear on its primary ballot for the 2024 presidential election.

Michigan’s decision comes almost two weeks after Colorado Supreme Court’s ruling, which deemed the Republican candidate ineligible for office, citing the U.S. Constitution’s insurrection clause in the 14th Amendment, which prohibits any individual who “engaged in insurrection or rebellion” from candidacy.

Only one judge out of seven on the Michigan Supreme Court dissented. Democrat Justice Elizabeth M. Welch revealed that, though she would have kept Trump on the ballot, she believes the decision should rely on the Section 3 challenge. Several people have expressed frustration with the Court’s decision, particularly given its 4-3 Democratic majority.

“We are disappointed by the Michigan Supreme Court’s decision,” said Ron Fein, legal director of the liberal group Free Speech for People. “The ruling conflicts with longstanding U.S. Supreme Court precedent that makes clear that when political parties use the election machinery of the state to select, via the primary process, their candidates for the general election, they must comply with all constitutional requirements in that process.”

Free Speech for People had previously filed a suit to bar Trump from reelection. However, the motion was unsuccessful. The group is also attempting to keep Trump’s name off the ballots in Minnesota and Oregon.

Forbes reports that Trump took to the alt-tech social media platform Truth Social to express his satisfaction with Michigan’s ruling.

“The Michigan Supreme Court has strongly and rightfully denied the Desperate Democrat attempt to take the leading Candidate in the 2024 Presidential Election, me, off the ballot in the Great State of Michigan,” Trump wrote. “This pathetic gambit to rig the Election has failed across the country, including in States that have historically leaned heavily toward the Democrats.”

Trump’s legal woes have dominated headlines in recent months and have only worsened before the upcoming presidential election. States are grappling with the long-lasting effect of “Trumpmania” and his involvement with the Jan. 6, 2021, riot.

The former president’s controversial actions have left many political analysts wondering just how much of a threat he poses to President Joe Biden’s campaign.

Byron Perkins, First HBCU Football Player To Come Out As Gay, Declares for 2024 NFL Draft

Byron Perkins, First HBCU Football Player To Come Out As Gay, Declares for 2024 NFL Draft

“I will be entering the 2024 NFL Draft to take my spot amongst the elite athletes, blessed and ready to take our talents to the next level. Why not me?"

Last year, Hampton University football player Byron Perkins made history when, as a junior at the school, he became the first football player at an HBCU to come out as gay.

Now, he is entering the 2024 NFL Draft, according to a recent Instagram post.

The defensive back thanked his family, friends, and coaches for supporting him over the years and stated that their advice and mentorship have led him to become who he is today.

“Since I was a child, I have had aspirations of being elite,” he wrote. “Not just an elite player but an elite person. I pride myself on growth and development. All of my previous endeavors to fully maximize my potential as a leader, student, and athlete have led me to this decision:

“I will be entering the 2024 NFL Draft to take my spot amongst the elite athletes, blessed and ready to take our talents to the next level. Why not me? Thank you all again for your support on my journey. Let’s go be great!”

He will be the third openly gay football player to enter the NFL Draft.

If drafted, it will be exactly 10 years after the first openly gay person who entered his name in the draft, Michael Sam, was selected by the St. Louis Rams. He was the 249th player out of 256 selected in the 2014 NFL Draft.

After the Rams released him, Sam never played in a regular season NFL game, although the Dallas Cowboys picked up him a month later for their practice squad.  He did play in the Canadian Football League (CFL) and the European League of Football (ELF).

The only other openly gay player to enter the draft was Scott Frantz, who went undrafted in 2020.

Memphis Grizzlies Guard JA Morant Responds To Criticism For Celebration In Win Over New Orleans Pelicans

He was literally dancing. :-/

Memphis Grizzlies guard Ja Morant responded to the heavy scrutiny he faced following a celebration after a big dunk during Tuesday night’s game against the New Orleans Pelicans.

Sports Illustrated reported after the win, Morant celebrated by dancing toward the crowd. However, many people on social media believed he was miming shooting fake guns.

The celebration comes just four games after Morant served a 25-game suspension stemming from the Grizzlies guard showing guns on Instagram Live twice.

Morant responded to the criticisms on the X app, formerly known as Twitter, indicating that he was dancing and not firing weapons.

https://twitter.com/JaMorant/status/1739880901125792027

The Grizzlies struggled without Morant during his 25-game suspension, starting the season 6-19. However, since Morant’s return, the Grizzlies have won four straight games, and the point guard has led the team in points for two of the wins and assists in all four.

The Murray State product was named the Western Conference player of the week following his return. Morant has averaged 28.8 points, 8.5 assists, and 5.3 rebounds while shooting 50.6% from the field in the four games he’s played in.

Morant, named the 2019-20 Rookie of the Year, has enjoyed a fantastic start to his career. The two-time All-Star won the 2021-22 Most Improved Player award and was named to the All-NBA second team.

However, the All-Star guard was suspended in June after he was seen on Instagram Live flashing a gun. It was the second time he was caught on social media with a firearm in his hand.

The 23-year-old was first suspended for eight games in March after he was shown with a gun on an Instagram Live video at a Denver nightclub.

The Grizzlies are currently 10-19 and in 13th place in the Western Conference. As bad as their start was, they’re just five games out of a playoff spot with more than a month to go before the regular season’s halfway point.

The Grizzlies start a two-game road trip Thursday against the Denver Nuggets and the L.A. Clippers before heading home to host the Sacramento Kings and San Antonio Spurs.

Palestinian Restaurant menu

Palestinian Restaurant In Jewish Brooklyn Neighborhood Faces Backlash Over Menu Phrases

The owners stress that it is important for the Ayat brand to have authentic representation.

The Palestinian restaurant chain Ayat’s new Brooklyn franchise has found itself in the center of controversy for the language in its menus, according to The Daily Beast.

Descriptions and phrases—including “from the river, to the sea,” a pro-Palestinian battle cry, and “down with the occupation” (on the front of the menus)—have the heavily Jewish neighborhood of Ditmas Park up in arms since the restaurant opened last week.

The Daily Beast reports that some residents who congregate on Facebook grew increasingly sour as customers deemed the menus ‘’openly genocidal,” and that marketing of “from the river to the sea” is a not-so subtle dog whistle for “Israel’s destruction through violent means.”

However, the restaurant’s owners, Ayat Masoud and husband Abdul Elenanin, are shocked by the Facebook group’s disapproval, and innocently claim that the inclusion of the phrase in the menu has been misinterpreted.

On Facebook, Elenanin explained the real meaning behind the phrase and their choice to include it. “Our interpretation on it is just simply freedom and rights to the Palestinian people between the Jordan River and Mediterranean Sea.”

He went on to add that their is no underlying passive hostility and that they also detest the mistreatment of Jews. ‘’We’re just against the Zionist mentality of, like, eliminate or flatten now. Our neighbors are Jews, our friends are Jews, we work with Jewish people all day every day. We do not hate Jewish people. It’s the opposite,” he continued, “Judaism and Islam, they are the two most similar religions.”

Like many small ethnic restaurants in NYC, Ayat displays its cultural pride with a number of Palestinian flags and depictions of people wearing traditional Palestinian clothing.

The owners stress that it is important for the Ayat brand to have authentic representation and markets the restaurants following two rules: “Number one is that I will always mention the occupation of the Palestinian people. And number two is that we will always advocate for peace.”

However, many feeling the restauranteurs are guilty of intentionally trying to get ignite customers’ emotions; the Palestine-Israel war started Oct. 7.

Dahlia Scheitzer of Ditmas Park is not buying Elenanin’s explanation.

“They’re poking the hornet’s nest, and they know what they are doing. The best analogy that I could think [of] is if a restaurant that had Southern food had the Confederate flag on their menu, and tried to spin it as ‘Oh, this is just Southern pride.’ And it’s like, you know, ‘Don’t be coy,'” she told The Daily Beast.

Others say Ayat’s owners have a right to decorate and market their establishment as they see fit.

Ayat remains in the hot seat as enraged customers have flocked to business review platforms and mobbed the establishment with one-star reviews in the days after Hamas’ attack, the owners told the New York Times in October.
