Egyptians Accuse Netflix of ‘Blackwashing’ Queen Cleopatra In Docuseries, ‘She Was Light-Skinned, Not Black’

Egyptian authorities are calling out Netflix for allegedly “blackwashing” Queen Cleopatra in Jada Pinkett Smith’s new docuseries.

Egyptologist and archaeologist Zahi Hawass and other Egyptians have been speaking out about the “completely fake” portrayal of Queen Cleopatra in African Queens: Queen Cleopatra,BBC reports. A legal complaint was filed in the wake of the trailer that was released last week over the claims that Netflix is seemingly trying to “blackwash” Egyptian history.

“Cleopatra was Greek, meaning that she was light-skinned, not black,” Hawass said on Wednesday.

“Netflix is trying to provoke confusion by spreading false and deceptive facts that the origin of the Egyptian civilization is Black.”

In the docuseries, narrated and executive produced by Jada Pinkett Smith, Cleopatra is played by British biracial actress Adele James, 27. In February, Netflix claimed the decision to cast James served as “a nod to the centuries-long conversation about the ruler’s race.”

Pinkett Smith said she “really wanted to represent Black women” in her new series. The first season of “African Queens” traced the rise and reign of Queen Njinga of Angola.

“We don’t often get to see or hear stories about black queens,” Pinkett explained.”

“And that was really important for me, as well as for my daughter, and just for my community to be able to know those stories because there are tons of them!” said Pinkett Smith.

But Hawass and other Egyptian authorities are attempting to block Netflix from releasing the new docuseries. On Sunday, lawyer Mahmoud al-Semary filed a complaint with the public prosecutor demanding “the necessary legal measures” be taken to block access to Netflix’s services in Egypt.

Al-Semary accuses Netflix of violating Egypt’s media laws by trying to “promote the Afrocentric thinking… which includes slogans and writings aimed at distorting and erasing the Egyptian identity.”

Meanwhile, the series producer reminds the public that Cleopatra’s “heritage is highly debated,” and James shut down the critics, saying, “If you don’t like the casting, don’t watch the show.”

Blow It Down: Five Black-Owned Dispensaries You Can Buy Bud And Smoke THC In Peace

The date, 4/20, is like Christmas for cannabis smokers. With recent changes to marijuana laws across the country, people can now smoke and purchase weed/THC freely without judgment—and in public.

Just in case you’re looking to enjoy the festivities in peace, here’s a list of some Black-owned dispensaries to support:

Tulsa, Oklahoma – Black Majic

With over 200 marijuana dispensaries in Tulsa County, Black Majic is looking to change the narrative for weed smokers. This dispensary allows users to not only purchase marijuana but to learn more about the industry if they’re considering this trade. Black Majic greets customers with an innovative kiosk system that involves opening doors for customers and trying the product before checking out.

Las Cruces, New Mexico, and Arizona – Fourtwenty Collections

The best way to celebrate is by shopping at the first Black-, women-owned dispensary in New Mexico and Arizona. Fourtwenty Collections opens on 4/20 and is owned by Marvin Thomas. She started the business in 2016, focusing on CBD-infused soap. She expanded into CBD-infused edibles after acquiring a vertically integrated medical dispensary license in Arizona.

Detroit, Michigan – Nuggets Cannabis Co.

The first recreational dispensary opened in the Motor City in March due to a social equity program called “Detroit Legacy.” The program is open to people with previous marijuana-related convictions and those whose parents had drug convictions before 2018. Nuggets, one of several stores with adult-use marijuana retail licenses, has opened its doors for employment for those in the system.

Chicago, Illinois – The Grasshopper Club

Started by a mother-and-son team, this Windy City dispensary set a precedent for Black, family-owned dispensaries in the Midwest. They offer job opportunities and a wide assortment of edibles, smokeable flower, vape pens, and other THC products. Diane, Matthew, and Chuck Brewer jumped at the opportunity to open the shop after Gov. JB Pritzker signed an equity-centric law to legalize adult-use cannabis in Illinois in 2019.

Queens, New York – Good Grades

Good Grades is a Black, women-owned dispensary that Gov. Kathy Hochul says creates a safe space for cannabis users. Located on Jamaica Ave., a predominately Black and brown residential neighborhood, the shop is among New York state’s first six retail dispensaries.

New Recruit Strategy From The Georgia National Guard Will Use Surveillance Tactics To Enlist High School Students

New Recruit Strategy From The Georgia National Guard Will Use Surveillance Tactics To Enlist High School Students

The Georgia National Guard is on the hunt for new recruits and decided a new tactic was the best way to go about it.

The Intercept reported they will be using location-based phone surveillance, called geofencing, in order to potentially enlist Georgia high school students. The plan will focus on 67 public high schools, targeting phones found within a one-mile boundary of their campuses with recruiting advertisements “with the intent of generating qualified leads of potential applicants for enlistment while also raising awareness of the Georgia Army National Guard.”

The target age for this plan is 17 to 24.

The Department of Defense anticipates a minimum of 3.5 million ad views and 250,000 clicks from interested teens. Ironically, this government-funded branch using surveillance comes after government officials promoted the ban of TikTok – claiming the China-based social media platform was spying on Americans. According to Gizmodo, the ads will be placed across Instagram, Snapchat, music apps, and TV streaming sites.

Taking it a step further, the GA Guard, known as the sixth largest National Guard in the U.S., is also seeking vendors to target “parents or centers of influence,” including people like coaches and school counselors, with recruiting ads. Called “retargeting,” the new campaign plans to broadcast pro-Guard ads in order to follow students around while they use the internet and other apps.

While the campaign is aimed at older teenagers, experts say the Guard hasn’t thought this all the way through – younger teens and even children in middle and elementary schools could also end up receiving the ads. Benjamin Lynde, ACLU of Georgia lawyer, says this is a way “to bypass parental involvement in the recruiting process.” He feels that “parents should be involved from the onset.”

According to a Georgia National Guard spokesperson, the plan in the contract is “in its infant stages,” but an active ad campaign could begin as early as September of this year.

North Carolina Substitute Teacher And Student Charged After Wild Classroom Fight Caught On Video

North Carolina Substitute Teacher And Student Charged After Wild Classroom Fight Caught On Video

A substitute teacher and high school student face criminal charges after engaging in a wild classroom fight that has since gone viral on social media.

The fight happened on Monday at Rocky Mount High School in Rocky Mount, N.C., ABC 11 reports. The now-viral video shows Xaviera Steele and a student arguing over a cell phone before things turned violent.

The student confronts Steele, demanding her cell phone back, but the teacher won’t budge. After the student steps up to Steele, who appears to be calling for backup, the teacher warns the student not to touch her.

“Don’t touch me,” Steele says.

But as the student continued reaching for the phone Steele was holding, the teacher responded by pushing the student back.

“Girl, don’t touch me,” Steele says while pushing the student back. That’s when the student responds by throwing a fist at the teacher, igniting their classroom brawl.

Steele is seen returning punches after knocking the student to the ground. Once on top, Steele continues pummeling fists as her dress rises, revealing her bottom.

Steele and the student were both charged with simple assault in the fight that resulted in no injuries. The teacher received a written promise to appear in court and was released.

She has been employed with the Nash County Public School System for about a year. The school system has since released a statement announcing an investigation into Steele’s future employment.

“Mrs. Steele is an employee of Kelly Services, which is a contracted vendor that provides substitutes for Nash County Public Schools,” the school system said.

“Her eligibility to continue employment will be determined by the outcome of the pending investigation.”

Social media has reacted to the viral video with mixed responses. Some believe the student was wrong for assaulting a teacher, while others believe Steele should have walked away instead of engaging in the violence.

“What is the school’s policy on students having phones while on campus premises? We should start there,” one Twitter user asked.

“The teacher would have done good for herself and just walk away. She was an adult in this!” added someone else.

The fight comes as North Carolina lawmakers consider passing a new bill to enforce stricter penalties for assaults against school staff. Proposed bill HB534 is working its way through legislation and, if passed, would classify certain assaults as felonies for repeat offenders.

Meet the 9-year-old Founder of the Paris Cares Foundation, Feeding the Needy in St. Louis

You’re never too small to make a big impact.

At five years old, Paris Williams, was inspired by a young character in the book, One Boy’s Magic, written by Cari Chadwick Deal. Now, at only nine years old, she is running a foundation where she provides for the needy community in St. Louis.

According to St. Louis Post-Dispatch, young Williams established the Paris Cares Foundation after explaining an idea to her mother, Alicia Suber.

“In the book, a boy wanted to make a difference, and that was his superpower,” Paris said about the book her kindergarten teacher shared with her four years ago. “He gave a bag of food to someone experiencing homelessness, and I came home that day and I told my parents that I wanted to do that. I wanted to make a difference and a change.”

Williams is spending her childhood taking trips to the grocery store so that she can fill bags with food for the homeless. To date, the child has delivered 10,000 meals, and nearly 5,000 care packages through her foundation. During the peak of COVID-19, Williams distributed the bags to homeless shelters and people in the downtown St. Louis area.

The creative young girl draws pictures on the bags and leaves written messages so everyone who receives one will feel special.

“This little kindergartener, Paris, is making a big difference in the world,” the One Boy’s Magic author wrote about Williams in a 2019 social media post “…So proud of her and her huge heart! And for getting the message that ‘One Boy’s Magic’ is all about.”

Suber said the young philanthropist is supported by her family, which includes her stepdad and brother who they live with in Kirkwood. “We’re proud of her, and it’s just been very rewarding to see Paris in her natural element. I feel like she found her passion at a young age, and she is really pushing forward with (her) goal for her foundation and what her vision is for the foundation,” Suber said.

Williams hopes to grow her Paris Cares Foundation so that she can expand her resources to needy people beyond the St. Louis community.

“It didn’t come easy,” Cherelle said in a separate post on her Instagram page as she posed in a Sergio Hudson pant suit beside her wifey and local justices. “I almost chose not to do it! Thank God I sat for the July 2022 bar exam… you may now address me as Counselor!”

Last year, BLACK ENTERPRISE reported that Cherelle graduated from North Carolina Central University (NCCU) in May 2022 with her Juris Doctor degree. She completed her law studies while Brittney Griner was still being detained in Russia. “Final grades dropped, I’ll be graduating law school with honors (cum laude)!” Cherelle wrote on Instagram before her graduation. She told her social media followers that being a law student was not an easy task for her and she wasn’t sure if she was capable of it.

“I didn’t just go to law school – I went to one of THE 6 HBCU law schools remaining! The way my ancestors are smiling,” she captioned a series of photos of her and her wife flaunting the NCCU Law School sweatshirt.

The Griners are continuing their advocacy work to raise awareness of other Americans who have been detained overseas. According to People, the couple released a statement on Instagram encouraging the Biden administration to bring home all “wrongfully detained” Americans.

Fulton County Jail Officials Resign After Inmate Found ‘Eaten Alive’ In Jail Cell

Fulton County Jail Officials Resign After Inmate Found ‘Eaten Alive’ In Jail Cell

Officials from the Fulton County Jail in Georgia have stepped down after a prisoner was “eaten alive.”

CNN reported the chief jailer and two assistant chief jailers submitted resignations at the request of Sheriff Patrick “Pat” Labat, who released a statement saying it was time to “clean house.”

“It’s clear to me that it’s time, past time, to clean house,” Labat said. The prisoner, Lashawn Thompson, died in his jail cell due to unbelievably unsanitary conditions, BLACK ENTERPRISE reported. Fulton County prison officials are now being investigated.

Attorneys representing the Thompson family said the cell conditions were inhumane. “The cell he was in was not fit for a diseased animal,” Michael Harper, the family attorney said. “This is inexcusable and it’s deplorable.”

Labat said in a statement that the officials, who remain unnamed, were asked for their resignations after reviewing preliminary evidence gathered during the internal investigation. “Collectively, the executive team that’s been in place has more than 65 years of jail administration and law enforcement experience,” the statement said.

“When leveraged at its very best, that experience can be invaluable. However, it can also lend itself to complacency, stagnation & settling for the status quo.”

Thompson was arrested in June 2022 for a misdemeanor simple battery charge, according to CBS News, and was placed in the psychiatric wing due to mental health issues. Three months later, he “was found dead in a filthy jail cell after being eaten alive by insects and bed bugs.” Thompson’s brother, Brad McCrae, saw pictures and compared them to images of Emmett Till. “It was heartbreaking because nobody should be seen like that. Nobody should see that. But the first thing that entered my mind was Emmett Till.”

A Fulton County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson said a full investigation has been launched. “The ongoing investigation is examining details regarding the medical care provided and ultimately will determine whether any criminal charges are warranted in this case,” the spokesperson said.

7 Hip Hop Songs That Celebrate Cannabis Culture

Today is April 20, aka 420 – a day that has been popularized to celebrate smoking marijuana, weed, spliff, an “L”, or whatever you call cannabis. The history of the famed holiday amongst weed smokers has been disputed and contested but, for most, there is no care for why it’s here, the important thing is that it’s HERE, as in today!

This isn’t about the history or the reason people around the world gather to partake in what most will say is a relaxing pastime, particularly when there is stress around. No, in hip-hop, weed has been popularized more than most topics of discussion, as it goes back to the early days of hip-hop. The references to cannabis are so plentiful that there are songs that include references to weed that only people who spoke marijuana will get.

What has been done today for the celebration of this “holiday,” you know, with it being legal practically everywhere now, is the selection of seven hip-hop songs that celebrate the culture of cannabis. I purposely left out Snoop Dogg because all we have to do is hit play on ANY Snoop Dogg song and most likely, there’s a weed reference.

Now, let’s puff, puff, pass…..

These are listed in no particular order and it’s not a best-of list or a favorite list but, literally, some of these songs were chosen randomly because listening to songs of this nature may require one (not me) to engage in that activity being mentioned here.

LunizI Got 5 On It (1995)

This Oakland-based duo consisted of members Yukmouth and Numskull. This was the world’s introduction to the group, as this was the first single off their debut album, Operation Stackola. This is heard across clubs and venues around the world and it still gets people to move their necks at any given time. There were two different versions of this song, as well as a remix that features several Bay Area rappers.

Channel LiveMad Izm (1995)

This particular song takes us across the country to the East Coast right next to the home of hip-hop, New York City. Another duo, the artists, Tuffy and Hakim, who hail from East Orange, NJ, received help from their mentor, BDP’s KRS-One on their debut song, Mad Izm. As KRS-One leads the track, the lyrics focus on the “weed-smoking” antics of the three emcees. The single was off their debut album, Station Identification.

Wiz KhalifaMary 3X (2012)

Another known weed-smoker who also debuted with a weed-related song, Black and Yellow, Wiz Khalifa kept that weed on his mind and in his songs. In this song, he celebrates his dedication to the marijuana plant as he insists in the song that “All I need is Mary Mary Mary I ain’t f**kin’ with no other drug!”

Afroman- Because I Got High (2000)

This recording artist has been labeled a one-hit wonder due to, well, no other hit records! But, when he did hit, he hit big, particularly in the weed-smoking community. This song is a favorite among weed smokers and non-cannabis enthusiasts alike. Although it sounds like a parody, many can relate to Afroman’s antics, as some listeners can related to forgetting what they were supposed to do “because” they “got high!”

Redman- How to Roll a Blunt (1992)

Another artist hailing from New Jersey who was primarily (well, outside of his lyrical flow) known for his mass use of weed. He even had a movie he starred in named, How High, which was also a song recorded with his co-star in the movie, Wu-Tang‘s Method Man. At the start of his career, he gave instruction to music lovers everywhere on How to Roll a Blunt and we can safely say that many learned from his guidance on the subject.

Styles PGood Times  (2002)

No, it’s not a remake of the Chic classic, “Good Times,” but, according to one-third of the rap group, The Lox, they are when he gets “high, high, high, all the time.” The savvy businessman makes certain that he informs hip-hop fans that he gets high, high, high every night, every day, and all the time. This is definitely a song dedicated to cannabis culture.

OutkastCrumblin’ Erb (1994)

The laidback sounds can only make you want to place a spliff between the lips. Big Boi and Dre allow everyone listening to this song to get in the mood to just relax and roll a blunt. This track was grooving off the Southernplayalisticadillacmuzic album.

Gabe Amo, Former Biden Adviser, Announces Run For Congress

Gabe Amo

Rhode Island, there could be a familiar face representing you in Congress.

Former White House official Gabe Amo announced he would officially run for Congress.

The Pawtucket native recently resigned from his position at the White House as the deputy director of the White House Office of Intergovernmental Affairs and Special Assistant to the President. According to WJAR 10, the Democratic candidate’s new focus is sitting in the seat once occupied by Rep. David Cicilline, who resigned to become CEO of the Rhode Island Foundation in February. Amo feels it’s time for a change after experiencing certain issues firsthand.

“I’ve seen firsthand what’s at stake – Republicans in Congress want to cut Social Security and Medicare, ban abortion nationally, and they’re doing nothing to combat senseless gun violence and climate change or to lower costs,” Amo said in a statement. Looking to represent Rhode Island residents in the 1st Congressional District, he said the people need a candidate that’s going to deliver from day one.

The son of immigrants from Ghana and Liberia, the young politician is already experienced in the political field, having previously been an aide to former Rhode Island Gov. Gina Raimondo, and served in the Obama administration.

He’s not the only one fighting for the Congressional seat. Fourteen other candidates have thrown their hats into the race. While he may be in good company, Amo says he is focused on the issues. “I’m really focused on the high-stakes situation that we’re in now.”

Rhode Island residents can support Amo and vote in the primary election in September and then in the special election on Nov. 7.

Byron Allen Takes Out Ad Calling On Carl Icahn To Address McDonald’s Racist Actions

Byron Allen Takes Out Ad Calling On Carl Icahn To Address McDonald’s Racist Actions

Byron Allen is never afraid to use his voice on behalf of our community, especially against corporate giants like McDonald’s.

On Wednesday, the founder, chairman, and CEO of Allen Media Group, took out an ad in The Chicago Tribune to formally address the racist practices at McDonald’s and new stakeholder Carl Icahn, who invested in the fast-food chain in an effort to eradicate inhumane conditions for pigs used in their meals. The ad highlighted several lawsuits filed against the company by Black franchisees, former executives, employees, and the Black former head of global security. Allen called on Icahn to “fight against [McDonald’s] blatant racism against Black America.”

The lawsuits alleged multiple documented instances of racist treatment, according to the ad. Black franchisees said that the popular fast-food giant set them up to fail by only placing them in communities with low incomes and high crime rates. Former executives also alleged that they were subject to hostile and racist treatment. The ad said that McDonald’s CEO Chris Kempczinski is accused of sending texts to the former Chicago mayor blaming the deaths of two Black and Latinx children on their own parents, as well as reprimanding the former Black head of security for the company after he “contradicted him in a public forum,” according to theGrio.

“It is time for America, especially Black America, to hold McDonald’s CEO Kempczinski and their Board of Directors fully accountable for the racist atrocities they have committed against Black America,” Allen told theGrio. In 2021, two of Allen’s companies sued the chain for $10 billion for racial discrimination alleging that of the approximate $1.6 billion McDonald’s spent in 2019 for television advertising in the U.S., only about $5 million was spent with Black-owned media companies. “Carl, I invite you to join us and other investors and civil rights leaders to ensure we stop the undeniable racism on the part of McDonald’s,” Allen said in the ad. “While your efforts to protect animal rights are commendable, please join us on the right side of history to end the horrible systemic racism against Black people by McDonald’s.”
