Martin Luther King Jr. Day Shines Spotlight on Continuing Need to Address Health Inequities, Improved Access

Martin Luther King Jr. Day Shines Spotlight on Continuing Need to Address Health Inequities, Improved Access

As Americans observe Martin Luther King Jr. Day, it should serve as a reminder of the importance of addressing health equity in access and research.

Olympus also takes this observance as a time to remind African American communities of the empowering preventive measure of knowing one’s family health history, according to a press release.

Health equity is as much of a human rights concern today as it was when Dr. King spoke to the Medical Committee for Human Rights in March 1966. At a press conference before his speech, Dr. King said, “Of all the forms of inequality, injustice in health care is the most shocking and inhumane.”

Statistics on cancer screening rates and incidences among African Americans continue to remind us of the need to address this ongoing issue.

The American Cancer Society reports that cases and mortality rates of colorectal cancer are highest among African Americans compared to other groups. While the reasons for the disparities are complex, access to healthcare and risk factor prevalence are historically primary factors.

The American Lung Association’s 2022 State of Lung Cancer report highlighted healthcare disparities among various racial groups, all of which showed lower rates of early diagnosis, treatment and five-year survival rate following diagnosis as compared to other ethnicities. African Americans living with lung cancer were 15% less likely to be diagnosed early, 10% more likely to not receive any treatment and 12% less likely to survive five years compared to white lung cancer patients, according to the American Lung Association.

Cancer screenings are a significant component to prevention, but people of color are often underrepresented in clinical trials and studies. A review examining the National Lung Screening Trial (NLST) that helped establish lung cancer screening guidelines by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) found that previous guidelines may have been too conservative for African-American smokers.

The review showed that the study included only 4% of African-American smokers and did not consider racial differences in smoking patterns despite a higher risk of lung cancer than those of white smokers. The resulting screening guidelines meant far fewer African-American smokers with lung cancer met the USPSTF guidelines.

The guidelines have since changed and at least one study of lung cancer screening rates at an urban, academic medical center showed that a group that was newly eligible and screened under the expanded guidelines included a higher proportion of African Americans, as compared to those eligible under the previous guidelines, 54% to 40%.

A Day to Talk about Health with Family

The Colorectal Cancer Alliance reports that about 1 in 4 colorectal cancer patients has a family history of the disease, stressing the importance of knowing your family history. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends people gather health information about parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, sisters, brothers, nieces and nephews regarding, in part, who had cancer, the type of cancer and when they were diagnosed.

The disease has come to the forefront in recent years through media coverage of Actor Chadwick Boseman‘s death in August 2020, at the age of 43, following a four-year battle with colon cancer. Chadwick Boseman’s older brother, Kevin, successfully overcame his own battle with colon cancer. And 38-year-old musician James Casey, who is currently undergoing colon cancer treatment following his 2021 diagnosis, has a history of colon and prostate cancer in his family.

Olympus supports the work of the Colorectal Cancer Alliance (CCA) and its “They Didn’t Say” campaign that connects to these celebrity influencers to highlight the disparities in how colorectal cancer affects the African-American community, also dispelling myths about the disease, focusing on the new minimum screening age of 45 and urging families to talk about their health histories. CCA offers a quiz to help people consider screening options based on individual risk factors.

7-Year-Old Writes First Book About Superhero Who Loves Making the World a Safer Place

Meet Eden Scott McLauchlin, a 7-year-old African American author from Fayetteville, North Carolina, has released his first children’s book entitled Eden Saves The Day: The Adventures of Captain Cleanup.

This book helps young kids understand the importance of lending a helping hand, and how important it is to keep the environment clean.

In the book, Eden himself is the main character who transforms into a superhero called Captain Cleanup. He fights crime, helps the elderly, protects animals, and cares for the environment by recycling and picking up trash. This book allows children to see that a superhero doesn’t have to be big and powerful to make a difference. There’s a superhero inside each and every one of us.

Eden showcases his superhero qualities in everyday life by excelling in sports as well as inside the classroom. He’s described as “above average” and though very curious, he showcases his loving and caring side for his family, friends, pets, and earth in any way that he can. He decided to write this book to inspire other kids to help out in any way they can. He hopes this book will help others see the importance of helping and keeping the environment clean.

Creative, Talented, Inspiring High School Students Chosen for This Year’s Disney Dreamers Academy at Walt Disney World Resort

A budding artist, an aspiring neurosurgeon and a creative storyteller are among the 100 talented high school students selected for this year’s Disney Dreamers Academy, an educational mentoring program hosted at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida.

The 100 students from across the country will descend on Walt Disney World Resort March 23-26 for the 16th annual event, aimed at broadening career awareness and creating exclusive opportunities for Black students and teens from underrepresented communities across America.

The full list of students is available at www.DisneyDreamersAcademy.com.

To kick off the announcement of the 2023 class, Mickey Mouse, Disney executives, and international recording star Kelly Rowland surprised one of the students with the news of her selection live on national TV from her school in Newark, N.J. Afterwards, the names of the entire Class of 2023 were displayed on a Times Square billboard.

Rowland, the four-time Grammy Award-winning singer, songwriter, actress and television executive producer, served last year as the program’s ambassador and as an advocate for the students. She shared personal insights, drawing from her own unique experience as a pre-teen performer, then as a teenager in one of the best-selling female groups of all time, Destiny’s Child.

The Disney Dreamers program is an important part of Disney’s commitment to support diverse communities. By encouraging the next generation to think big, Disney hopes the students will carry what they learn back home and continue pursuing their dreams, according to a press release.

“We’re ready to welcome another outstanding group of teens from across the country for our 16th year!” said Tracey Powell, Disney Signature Experiences vice president and Disney Dreamers Academy executive champion. “They are going to have the experience of a lifetime, setting them on a journey to go out and achieve their dreams, just like the classes who came before them.”

Since 2008, Disney Dreamers Academy has inspired more than 1,500 students from across the country by fueling their dreams and showing them a world of possibilities as they prepare for their futures. In the years following, graduates have become storytellers, artists, engineers, innovators, journalists and more, and have transitioned into mentors to the Disney Dreamers who follow them.

Spike Lee Launches Fellowship for Students From Morehouse, Spelman College, Clark Atlanta University

Spike Lee is paying it forward at his alma mater in a major way with the launch of an official fellowship program that will aid HBCU students.

On Thursday, the Academy Award-winning director, who graduated from Morehouse in 1979, and his agency, Gersh, announced the Spike Fellows Program that will support students from Morehouse, Spelman College, and Clark Atlanta University, as noted by The Hollywood Reporter.

Together, the fellowship recipients will form the Atlanta University Center Consortium (AUCC).

“I know firsthand the education one receives at a Historically Black College and University,” Lee said in a statement.

“I am who I am because of my grandmother [Zimmie Jackson] and my mother [Jacquelyn Shelton Lee] who both graduated from Spelman College. I am who I am because of my grandfather [Richard Jackson Shelton] and my father [William Lee] who both graduated from Morehouse. It’s on the campuses of Spelman and Morehouse where they met, fell in love and got married. As my elders often told me, ‘Deeds not words.’”

The fellowship will aid students through student loan debt relief, mentorship within the entertainment industry, post-college internships, and full-time employment, courtesy of Gersh. The Spike Fellows class will consist of five AUCC graduates who will be selected by a panel of Lee, the AUCC community, and Gersh management.

Lee and Gersh have a multiyear commitment to expand the fellowship to include more students and resources in the foreseeable future.

“As industry leaders, we’ve always taken seriously the responsibility to build a more diverse, dynamic ecosystem in which people of all ethnicities, backgrounds and experiences can thrive,” Gersh Senior Managing Partner Leslie Siebert said.

“We are honored that Spike has chosen us to be his inaugural partner, and we are proud to welcome the five inaugural Spike Fellows into our organization.”

R&B ‘King’ Jacquees Opens New Spot, ‘The Wine and Tapas Bar’ in Georgia

R&B ‘King’ Jacquees Opens New Spot, ‘The Wine and Tapas Bar’ in Georgia

After going viral for sparking countless debates about referring to himself as the modern “King of R&B,” controversial singer/songwriter Jacquees is building a business portfolio that keeps him close to his family and his home base.

The entertainer born Rodriquez Jacquees Broadnax hosted the grand opening and ribbon cutting for his new spot, The Wine and Tapas Bar, in Lithonia, Georgia on January 4.

Located in walking distance from Stonecrest Mall, guests can chill on plush black and green furniture to enjoy hookah as well as small plates. The lounge’s 160-square-foot interior seats around 100 patrons and is completely decorated with ivy-like greenery and grapevines, gold walls, black roofing and marble floors.

The Wine and Tapas Bar is currently open from Wednesday to Sunday.

The 28-year-old artist-turned-entrepreneur was originally introduced to his business partner, Voneka Marks, through his mother, Rosie Broadnax. The vocalist and Marks officially went into business together beginning last October.

“We just took it from there,” Jacquees said, sipping some red wine.

“I got into the business with Voneka, upgraded the spot a little, and did some little things to it. I wanted to keep it grown and sexy while bringing a good time to the Eastside.”

Jacquees, who was born and raised nearby in Decatur, Georgia, wanted to open a hideaway that was close to the shopping mall where he spent the majority of his own money as a youth.

Venturing into opening The Wine and Tapas Bar is the performer’s way of bringing a Black-owned business into the area that could create more jobs for local Black and brown people. The Wine and Tapas Bar’s first executive chef is one of the “You” and “B.E.D.” vocalist’s childhood friends.

“It feels good,” Jacquees said. “I always was a young boy dreaming, and I’m still dreaming. I used to shop over here, and I still do, but I used to really go hard over here.”

The new establishment came in the wake of Jacquees releasing his third studio album, “Sincerely for You,” last December under Cash Money Records and Republic Records. Executive produced by Grammy-winning chart-topper Future, the album features appearances from Summer Walker, 21 Savage, 6lack and John P. Kee.

The “Wait For U” artist came on board for Jacquees’ project after joining the singer to collaborate on music last summer. Future convinced Cash Money Records co-founder Bryan “Birdman” Williams to let him assist with picking records and getting the album ready for release.

“I’ve known Future for awhile, but it started in the studio last summer when he told ‘Stunna’ that he could executive produce my album,” Jacquees said. “That’s basically how it happened.”

Jacquees also found time to form his own record label, FYB Records, which released its debut compilation project, “Hood Relatives,” last April.  The stylish entertainer teamed with apparel company Frozen Roses Collection to unveil a capsule collection with hoodies, t-shirts and hats that feature the flower and elephants.

Teaming with The Frozen Roses Collection gave Jacquees the chance to think outside of the box on how to pay homage to his mother and share parts of who he is with his fans and massive social following. “I’ve been tuned in to what Frozen Roses has been doing for awhile, but they chose me to be the first they wanted to roll out with,” Jacquees said.

“I’m a mama’s boy, so I want my mama here forever. I just figured out what I could do creatively with what the brand already had going. I did little things that signified my mother and me, so I just ran with that.”

Opening The Wine and Tapas Bar is something that Jacquees is extremely proud of. The new business gives him a chance to bring in his peer group to interact and socialize with an older crowd.

Priding himself on sharing an extensive R&B playlist with his customers, Jacquees hopes the new spot will be both a safe space and a great alternative to experience a chilled atmosphere and a good time.

“I got a lot of stuff going on, but right now it’s about the Wine and Tapas Bar,” Jacquees said.

“This ain’t no problem place. You can be young, come in here, be safe, have a good time and eat good, but you gotta have that sauce because you’re gonna get the vibe you’re looking for.”

Valerie Jarrett to Share Remarks at General Mills and UNCF’s 33rd Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Breakfast

Valerie Jarrett to Share Remarks at General Mills and UNCF’s 33rd Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Breakfast

General Mills and UNCF’s 33rd annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Breakfast will return in-person for the first time since 2020 with a corresponding virtual program. Former senior advisor to U.S. President Barack Obama, businesswoman and best-selling author Valerie Jarrett will share keynote remarks followed by a moderated conversation with Minnesota attorney, legal and political analyst, Abou Amara. The hybrid event will be held at the Minneapolis Convention Center on Jan. 16, 2023, from 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. CST. Tickets are available at MLKBreakfast.com.

Organized by General Mills and United Negro College Fund (UNCF), the Minneapolis event is one of the nation’s largest celebrations of Martin Luther King Jr.’s life and legacy and raises funds to help under-represented students in the Twin Cities successfully graduate from college. This year’s event theme is “Keep Moving Forward,” inspired by Dr. King’s leadership and lessons applied to the pressing social issues of today.

“Each year, this event gives us the opportunity to come together to reflect on the lasting legacy of Dr. King and how we can continue to advance the causes he fought for in our own communities,” said Mary Jane Melendez, Chief Sustainability and Global Impact Officer at General Mills. “We remain steadfast in our commitment to creating a world that reflects Dr. King’s dream and to advancing a culture of equity, inclusion and belonging.”

General Mills and UNCF have a shared, long-standing commitment to addressing the need for deep, lasting changes to the systemic inequity faced by BIPOC communities. In honor of Dr. King, a 1948 graduate of Morehouse College, a historically Black college, net proceeds from the event benefit UNCF Twin Cities’ MLK Legacy Scholarship, which supports local students of color to attend colleges and member Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU). Through this partnership, General Mills has provided nearly $7 million to support more than 400 programs and 37 academic institutions supported by UNCF.

“The legacy and words of Dr. King continue to inspire our advocacy for the importance of minority education and community engagement,” said Dr. Michael L. Lomax, president and CEO of UNCF. “We are grateful to work in partnership with General Mills to bring our community together each year and build up the essential support and awareness for our students and HBCUs.”

The annual holiday breakfast and support of UNCF remains a priority for General Mills as part of its enterprise-wide “G Stands for Good” purpose platform, which is rooted in two foundational pillars – planet and people – and guides the company’s goal of creating meaningful change, building a culture of belonging and taking action on issues of racial and social justice within our communities.

Community Engagement Opportunities

The MLK Holiday Breakfast in Minneapolis continues to inspire change in the world and honor those individuals whose footprints uplift the community. Following the breakfast, members of the Twin Cities community can engage through a variety of learning and volunteer opportunities organized by Hands on Twin Cities.
