FBI Director Says ‘Serious Changes’ Are Coming After Probe Of Capitol Riot

Reuters – FBI Director Chris Wray on Thursday suggested “serious charges” are still coming in the criminal investigation of the deadly Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol by supporters of former President Donald Trump.

“This is a very ongoing investigation and there’s a lot more to come,” Wray said during an oversight hearing held by the House of Representatives Judiciary Committee. “I would expect to see more charges — some of them may be more serious charges.”

Wray testified that the FBI considered the attack an act of “domestic terrorism.” He said he understands why Democratic lawmakers have called the attack an “insurrection,” but said it would not be appropriate for him to use that word because of the effect it could have on pending criminal cases.

“In my role as FBI director, because that’s a term that has legal meaning, I really have to be careful about using words like that,” Wray said.

Democratic lawmakers repeatedly grilled Wray, appointed by Trump in 2017, over what they said were intelligence failures that left law enforcement ill-prepared for the deadly attack.

“The FBI’s inaction in the weeks leading up to Jan. 6 is simply baffling,” Nadler said. “It is hard to tell whether FBI headquarters merely missed the evidence — which had been flagged by your field offices and was available online for all the world to see — or whether the Bureau saw the intelligence, underestimated the threat, and simply failed to act.”

Wray responded that on Jan. 5 an FBI field office in Virginia issued an explicit warning, sent to U.S. Capitol Police, that extremists were preparing to travel to Washington to commit violence.

Wray added that “almost none” of the 500 people charged so far with participating in the attack had been under FBI investigation previously, suggesting it would have been difficult for the FBI to have monitored them in advance.

“You can be darn sure that we are going to be looking hard at how we can do better, how we can do more, how we can do things differently in terms of collecting and disseminating” intelligence, Wray said.

Asked whether the FBI was investigating Trump or his associate Roger Stone, Wray said he could neither confirm nor deny any FBI investigation.

“I’m talking about Mr. Big, Number One,” said Tennessee Democrat Steve Cohen, referring to Trump. “Have you gone after the people who incited the riot?”

Wray responded: “I don’t think it would be appropriate for me to be discussing whether or not we are or aren’t investigating specific individuals.”

Black Nonprofit Gifts Minneapolis Teacher, Thetis White, With $50,000 To Pay Off Student Loans

A Black fifth-grade teacher at Monroe Elementary School in Minneapolis was applauded by his students and peers while receiving a $50,000 check to help pay off his student loans.

Markus Flynn, executive director of the nonprofit Black Men Teach, personally handed Thetis White the large sweepstakes-sized check to help the educator pay off his loans and take off some of his financial burdens, EdSurge reported.

“It’s a great thing that they did. I know that he deserves it very much,” one of Thetis’ students said. The teacher was overcome with emotion and broke out in tears while accepting the reward, as noted by Blavity.

Flynn prides himself on the nonprofit’s work while also working as a part-time teacher in Minnesota himself. The state is regarded for having good schools but a poor track record for serving Black students.

“When I started looking into education studies I saw some of the most compelling statistics I’ve ever seen—in any field,” Flynn said on the EdSurge Podcast.

He already understood the importance of Black students having Black teachers but seeing statistics opened his eyes even more. He cited studies that said if a Black student has at least one Black teacher by the time they reach third grade, they are 13% more likely to enroll in college. Black students are 32% more likely to go to college if they have two Black teachers simultaneously.

He noted the harsher treatment Black male students are often subjected to when compared to their white counterparts.

“They represent 10 percent of the student population but 42 percent of the discipline incidents,” he said.

Despite the education disparities people of color face, Flynn was motivated to teach in Minnesota because of all the change he knows the state can bring about.

“A place like Minnesota is actually a place that should be the first place looking to change because the outcomes are so disparate, and it’s so obvious,” Flynn said. “And in Minnesota right now, it’s the hub when it comes to like this focus on equity and justice, given the murder of George Floyd and Daunte Wright. And so this is a place where the work really needs to be done.”

A Mother and Son Help Black and Brown Kids See Themselves in Books While Promoting Kindness

Marsha Guerrier, 47, is a book lover who wrote “Just as I Am Kindness” with her 6-year-old son Joshua Guerrier amid the pandemic, according to The Amsterdam News. Guerrier is a New Yorker who previously published a book about her own life and experiences called “Life Balance for Women on the Rise.”

The business leader started a nonprofit, Yva Jourdan Foundation, to give back to her local community. The Just As I Am Reading Program underscores inclusion and embracing youth with various special needs.

“We started with the nonprofit giving out books about kindness, so I would read and hand out books to classrooms in the Nassau area. Then it dawned on me that most of the books that we were handing out were predominantly Caucasian families and kids and I really wanted to have stories that represent not only myself but the kids in the underrepresented communities through my program,” Marsha told The Amsterdam News.

Guerrier shared that Joshua expressed interest in co-authoring “Just as I Am Kindness.” And now, she hopes that their book will encourage friendliness in children who do not look like each other.

The 32-page book strives to help remind others to integrate kindness on a daily basis.

“The book is about prompting people to have a conversation about kindness and anti-bullying,” Guerrier explained in a press release, “while making sure kids at the elementary-school-age are well equipped to support one another.”

The author mentioned that many youths are not taught ways to display kindness or accept people who are different. Her point about kids learning the value of kindness dovetails with a study presented by PLOS ONE. Their study found that doing good deeds regularly—which is a form of exhibiting prosocial activities— contributes to happiness and being well-liked, even in classrooms.

“Similar to being happy, being well-liked by classmates has ramifications not only for the individual but also for the community at large. For example, well-liked preadolescents exhibit more inclusive behaviors and less externalizing behaviors (i.e., less bullying) as teens,” the study found.

And when it comes to Black and brown kids seeing themselves in literature, identifying with the characters does matter. Scholastic noted that is important for children to see themselves represented in literature because it links to identity, cultural insight, and connection with self. The demand for diverse titles is rising. Scholastic also said that 47% of parents desire literature that features books with people of color, according to their findings from their “6th Edition Scholastic Kids & Family Reading Report.”

Isimemen Etute, A Virginia Tech Recruit, Beat Tinder Date to Death After Learning He Was A Man

Isimemen Etute, A Virginia Tech Recruit, Beat Tinder Date to Death After Learning He Was A Man

A Virginia Tech football recruit is in jail facing murder charges for beating his Tinder date to death after learning he was a man and not the woman he met online.

Eighteen-year-old Isimemen Etute was a 2021 recruit on the Virginia Tech Hokies football team. But the college freshman was arrested on Wednesday and charged with second-degree murder for allegedly killing 40-year-old Jerry Smith, USA Today reports.

The young man met Smith under the name “Angie” while on the Tinder dating app. The young athlete went to Smith’s home on April 10 and received oral sex, according to the t attorney Jimmy Turk. The two engaged in sexual activity with Etute not aware of Smith’s sexual identity. Etute returned on May 31 and realized that Smith and “Angie” were the same person.

Etute began to punch Smith repeatedly and stomped on him, Montgomery County Commonwealth’s Attorney Mary Pettitt said, as noted by WSLS. Etute admitted that Smith did not fight back and he heard a bubbly and gurgling noise while leaving the home.

A medical examiner ruled Smith’s cause of death as a blunt force to the head. A judge gave Etute a $75,000 secured bond due to him meeting all the requirements to prove he’s neither a flight risk nor a danger to society. The college student had no prior criminal history. The Commonwealth initially appealed the judge’s ruling, but Etute was granted bond later on Wednesday. He has been required to remain at his parent’s house in Virginia Beach and is not allowed to leave the state.

Virginia Tech revealed that the teen was placed on immediate interim suspension and was suspended from the football team. He was recruited to the school as a three-star linebacker from Frank W. Cox High School in Virginia Beach. He had just signed his letter of intent in December before enrolling at Virginia Tech in January.

“RHOA” Star Shamea Morton’s ‘Racist’ Encounter at Le Bilboquet Restaurant Revealed

“RHOA” Star Shamea Morton’s ‘Racist’ Encounter at Le Bilboquet Restaurant Revealed

Le Bilboquet French bistro in Buckhead Atlanta was trending for all the wrong reasons last month after reportedly turning away former NBA legend Dominique Wilkins for wearing casual clothing.

At the time, Wilkins, a longtime star for the Atlanta Hawks, blasted the restaurant and accused it of discriminating against him due to his race.

“In my many years in the world, I’ve eaten at some of the greatest restaurants in the world, but never have I felt prejudice or been turned away because of the color of my skin, until today,” Wilkins tweeted on May 22.

The restaurant followed up with an apology to Wilkins and an update to its “business casual” dress code to include jeans and sneakers, Fox News reports.

“We, at Le Bilboquet, do our best to accommodate all of our guests. However, we have received consistent complaints from our patrons regarding other guest’s wardrobe choices,” the restaurant said. “As a result, to protect our restaurant’s culture, we installed a minimum standard in our ‘business casual attire dress code which includes jeans and sneakers but prohibits baseball caps and athletic clothing including sweat pants and tops.”

However, it’s now been revealed that The Real Housewives of Atlanta star Shamea Morton was also turned away from the same establishment on April 8 despite being dressed in “fashionable” attire.

“Morton came to Le Bilboquet around 3 pm for a business meeting,” a source familiar with the incident told EURWeb. “She had a reservation already in place. At the time, Shamea entered the establishment wearing a Fashionable suit. She was immediately told by management that she wouldn’t be allowed entry based on her attire.”

The insider detailed Shamea began to notice all of the “Caucasian” guests seated but not in compliance with the enforced dress policy.

“Shamea started recording videos of different ‘Caucasian’ guests wearing sneakers, some wearing ‘Slides’ which were prohibited according to the listed dress code,” the source said. After bringing this to the manager Mark’s attention, the insider claims the manager “insisted that they were within their rights to be seated.”

“Shamea went on to show Mark a video of a Caucasian woman wearing ‘Slides’ that were on the restricted Dress code list and his reply was simply ‘Those are Pretty,'” the source said.

A video clip supports Shamea’s claims of White patrons casually dressed. The source said Shamea told has been turned away from the establishment three times.

When considering Shamea and Wilkins’ experiences with the restaurant, they might want to consider hiring some inclusion consultants to help them get with the times.

Suspected Gang Leader, Gary Creek, Kills Himself After Keeping Police Officers at Bay for 3 Hours

Suspected Gang Leader, Gary Creek, Kills Himself After Keeping Police Officers at Bay for 3 Hours

In Georgia, the suspected founder and leader of a street gang has died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound yesterday after leaving police officers at a standstill for 3 hours.

According to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Gary Anthony Creek, 39, of Baltimore, MD, was found dead with a gunshot wound in a Sandy Springs apartment around 4 p.m. after being barricaded as police officers surrounded him. According to The Associated Press, federal officials requested an arrest warrant for his potential involvement as the founder of a violent Baltimore gang.

Three hostages were rescued shortly before Creek committed suicide.

According to theGrio, police officials followed up on an arrest warrant after Creek didn’t show up after being named in a racketeering indictment. He and 14 other gang associates he led and founded, Triple-C gang were charged with 18 murders, 27 attempted murders, and drug distribution.

Creek was supposed to turn himself in on June 3. When he violated the conditions of release,  the U.S. attorney’s office in Maryland said in a statement that “the government has accordingly filed a motion to revoke Mr. Creek’s conditions of release, and has requested a warrant for his arrest based on an assessment that he is a flight risk.”

Eileen Rinaldi Fires Husband From Business For Launching Racist Attack Against Black Customer

Eileen Rinaldi Fires Husband From Business For Launching Racist Attack Against Black Customer

A wife made the tough decision to fire her husband from their family business after he hurled a racial slur at a Black customer.

Eileen Rinaldi, the owner of Ritual Coffee Roasters in San Francisco, gave her husband, John, the pink slip after he used a racial slur at a Black man outside of their roasting house last month, The San Francisco Chronicle reported. Eileen sent out an Instagram post on June 8 announcing her husband John’s termination.

“I want to tell you about a difficult and personal situation that is happening at my company, Ritual Coffee. Last week, I terminated my husband, John Rinaldi, from working at Ritual on a freelance project and from doing any future work in any capacity at Ritual,” she shared in a lengthy caption.

Her husband, nicknamed “Chicken John,” claimed he used the slur while arguing over a parking spot last month, SF Eater reports. But his firing comes one year after employees at the coffee shop complained about Rinaldi workplace, which often included mistreatment towards people of color.

“He reported to me that he had a verbal altercation over a parking space while managing a construction project,” Eileen continued in the post. “He said that during the altercation, an individual called John a racial epithet. John said he then made the horrible mistake of repeating the racial slur back to the individual, something that he never should have done.”

Ellen Rinaldi shared how she is learning from the experience and that she remains committed to having an “anti-racist, inclusive, and equitable business and place for our employees, customers, and community,” she wrote in the post.

But from the looks of the comments, it looks like locals don’t think his termination was sincere. “I bet it’s not his first time using it or your first time hearing him use it,” one person said. “Come on, just between us. . . . this is not new and you don’t want to lose revenue. This is the only reason you posted this,” added someone else.

6-Year-Old Black Boy Injured After Ryan Le-Nguyen Shoots At Him For Playing Outside

6-Year-Old Black Boy Injured After Ryan Le-Nguyen Shoots At Him For Playing Outside

A Michigan family is outraged after an Asian man who shot a 6-year-old Black boy was given a low bond and released from police custody. The incident comes amid heightened reporting surrounding anti-Asian hate crimes with many in the Black community questioning the lack of support behind anti-Black crimes from Asians.

Ryan Le-Nguyen, 29, left a little boy injured after he fired a round outside his home in the 1300 block of Candlewood Lane in Ypsilanti Township, MLive reported. Investigators say the 6-year-old was with a group of children who was playing outside.

After Le-Nguyen complained about the noise coming from outside, Ring video captured him firing a shot from a window in his home, WXYZ, the Detroit ABC affiliate, reported.

“He tried hitting me with a sledge hammer but that’s not going to work because I’m too fast. (Then he) got a gun, a shot me right here,” Coby Daniel told Fox 2.

Despite attempting to kill a child, Le-Nguyen was released from jail and given a $10,000 cash bond by Magistrate Elisha Fink. He was only ordered to stay away from the boy’s house.

“I’m trying to figure out he got a bond so low for trying to kill my kid,” the boy’s father, Arthur Daniel, said. “I’m scared for my family because I don’t know what he’s capable of.”

Washtenaw County Prosecutor Eli Savit claims the county asked for a $100,000 cash bond for Le-Nguyen six months after he vowed to reform the bail system and do away with cash bonds in most cases.

Savit has since filed an emergency motion to have Le-Nguyen’s bond increased. It will be heard in front of a different judge Tuesday with support from Washtenaw County Sheriff Jerry Clayton.

“We owe it to the system and the community we serve, to evaluate whether we are getting those outcomes,” Clayton said. “And if we are not we need to be smart enough and courageous enough to say this is not what we intended, let’s make our adjustments.”
