U.S. Job Openings Hit Record High As More Citizens Voluntarily Leave Employment

U.S. Job Openings Hit Record High As More Citizens Voluntarily Leave Employment

Reuters – U.S. job openings surged by nearly one million to a new record high in April, while more people voluntarily left their employment, strengthening the view that a recent moderation in job growth was due to supply constraints.

The Labor Department’s monthly Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey, or JOLTS report, on Tuesday also showed layoffs hit a record low in April. Millions of unemployed Americans remain at home because of trouble securing child care, generous unemployment benefits and lingering fears over the COVID-19 pandemic  even as vaccines are widely accessible and the pandemic is subsiding.

“The evidence continues to grow that the lackluster job creation of recent months is a result of constraints on labor supply and that the labor market is tight,” said Conrad DeQuadros, senior economic advisor at Brean Capital in New York.

Job openings, a measure of labor demand, increased by 998,000 to 9.3 million on the last day of April, the highest level since the series began in December 2000. Vacancies rose in all four regions and were spread across nearly all industries as well as the government sector.

Unfilled jobs in the accommodation and food services increased by 349,000. There were an additional 115,000 job openings in other services, while vacancies at manufacturers of long-lasting goods increased 78,000. But job openings decreased in educational services and mining and logging industry.

Economists polled by Reuters had forecast job openings would rise to 8.3 million in April. The job openings rate shot up to an all-time high of 6.0% from 5.4% in March.

Hiring inched up to 6.1 million in April from 6.0 million in the prior month. The government reported last Friday that job growth picked up in May, with employers raising wages, but the pace of hiring was below economists’ expectations for a second straight month.

Companies are struggling to find workers even as about 9.3 million people are officially unemployed. Economists expect the labor market disconnect will be resolved in the fall. Government-funded unemployment benefits will end in early September. Republican governors in 25 states, accounting for more than 40% of the workforce, are ending federal government unemployment benefits, including a $300 weekly subsidy, starting on Saturday.

Schools are set to fully reopen in the fall and more people are expected to be vaccinated against COVID-19. At least half of the adult American population is fully inoculated.

The JOLTS report also showed 384,000 people voluntarily quit their jobs in April, lifting the total to a record 4.0 million. About 106,000 retail workers left their jobs, while professional and business services saw 94,000 resignations.

In the transportation, warehousing and utilities industry, 49,000 workers quit. The number of quits rose in the South, Midwest and West regions. The quits rate increased to an all-time high of 2.7% from 2.5% in March.

The quits rate is normally viewed by policymakers and economists as a measure of job market confidence. But nearly 1.8 million women have left the labor force since February 2020 mostly because of problems related to child care.

With willing workers scarce, layoffs and discharges dropped by 81,000 to a record low 1.4 million. There was a 0.95 open job per unemployed person in April. Rising job openings and voluntary quits could pressure employers to raise wages.

Stocks on Wall Street were mixed. The dollar rose against a basket of currencies. U.S. Treasury prices were higher.

Florida Man Charged With Child Abuse After Throwing Infant At Police Officer in High-Speed Chase

Florida Man Charged With Child Abuse After Throwing Infant At Police Officer in High-Speed Chase

A Florida man faces some serious felony charges after he decided to throw a 2-month-old baby at a police officer following a high-speed car chase.

Thirty-six-year-old John Henry James III faces two felony counts of aggravated child abuse after he threw a 2-month-old infant at a deputy on May 26, the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office reports. James threw the baby after taking cops on a 40-minute chase through residential neighborhoods, NY Post reports.

“You can’t throw a baby at us and expect us to treat you with kid gloves,” Sheriff Eric Flowers said.

The chase kicked off on State Road 60 in Vero Beach, Florida, after an officer tried to pull James over for an alleged failure to maintain a lane, Law and Crime reports. Instead of stopping, James sped past a group of officers striking one of their vehicles. He then dodged a number of roadblocks put in place to stop him and avoid “at least one” stop-stick deployment.

“He ran over another set of stop-sticks, but they failed to disable the vehicle,” the department said.

After being “boxed in” at an apartment complex, James made an exit from his car with the baby in tow.

“As he bailed out of his car, he grabbed the 2-month-old boy who had been in the car with him and threw the child in the direction of a deputy,” the department alleges. “That deputy successfully caught the child and was able to relocate the baby to safety.”

After throwing the baby, James fled on foot as cops pursued him. He continued to resist arrest and allegedly “kicked and bit at deputies and struggled when being loaded into the back of a deputy’s cruiser,” the statement said. “A large group of residents gathered around the deputies, forcing us to call for backup to assist in crowd control.”

Henry is being held without bond. He faces several other felony charges including aggravated battery on an officer/firefighter/EMT, battery, reckless driving, and resisting arrest with violence.

Justice Department Unveils New Steps To Reduce Gun Violence Across America

Justice Department Unveils New Steps To Reduce Gun Violence Across America

The Department of Justice announced Monday it will take steps to reduce gun violence by curbing the use of stabilizing devices that convert pistols into rifles.

The DOJ announcement follows up on the executive actions President Joe Biden signed in April, which gave the agency 60 days to act. The DOJ issued a notice of a proposed rulemaking saying using the devices to convert pistols into short-barreled rifles is subject to the National Firearms Act, which poses stiff regulations on short-barreled rifles.

“Today the Department of Justice announced two new steps to stem the epidemic of gun violence in our country, following through on the president and attorney general’s announcement in April of a set of initial actions,” White House press secretary Jen Psaki told reporters on Monday.

Psaki added the man who killed 10 people in a Boulder, Colorado, grocery store in April used a pistol with a stabilizing device.

The DOJ also published a model legislation for states to craft extreme risk protection orders or red flag laws, which authorizes courts to bar those having a mental episode or who have a restraining order against them from accessing a firearm. Currently, 19 states and Washington D.C. have red flag laws.

However, those laws only go so far. Michael Lawlor, a professor at the University of New Haven said red flag laws are a good tool, but won’t work without a comprehensive system of gun control and regulations.

“In Indiana, they have the red flag law … but they don’t have the mechanism to make it difficult to get out and get more guns,” Lawlor told CNN.

There have been more than 240 mass shootings this year in which 275 people have been killed and 1,001 people have been injured. The rise in mass shootings has also corresponded to a rise in gun sales across the country including a significant rise in sales among women and African Americans.

Texas lawmakers are pushing a bill that will allow adults over 21 to carry a handgun without a license, previous training, and without demonstrating proficiency in using the weapon. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has already committed to signing the bill when it hits his desk.

Galveston, TX, Birthplace Of Juneteenth, To Make It An Official Holiday 156 Years Later

Galveston, TX, Birthplace Of Juneteenth, To Make It An Official Holiday 156 Years Later

On June 19, 1865, Union troops arrived on the shores of Galveston, Texas, and told the enslaved people they were free. Now, 156 years later, the city of Galveston has made Juneteenth an official city holiday.

The initiative to make the day an official holiday in Galveston was started by councilman William Schuster, who is also a history teacher for the city’s school district.

Juneteenth celebrates the day Union Troops arrived in Texas to inform enslaved African Americans that they were free. President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation to end slavery, however, slavery continued in Texas for another two and a half years due to no large-scale fighting or and no significant presence of Union troops in the state.

According to the History Channel, when Union troops landed in Galveston, U.S. General Gordon Granger stood on Texas soil and read General Orders No. 3: “The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free.”

According to KPRC 2, Mayor Craig Brown said the holiday is long overdue. All non-emergency city offices will be closed and city employees will receive a paid day off.

North Dakota, South Dakota, and Hawaii are the only states that don’t recognize Juneteenth as an official holiday. Last year the holiday received notable attention as it came in the middle of the Black Lives Matter movement. Corporations, including tech companies, professional sports organizations, large banks, retail stores, and even food companies, gave employees a paid day off in honor of the holiday. Many have chosen to observe the holiday forever.

Galveston and Houston are hosting a wide range of events to celebrate the holiday including art installations, concerts, parties, a bike tour, and a parade. New York City, Chicago, Atlanta, and Detroit are all hosting events and celebrations to celebrate Juneteenth.

Dawn Porter Discusses Prince Harry’s Reaction When He Received Gift for Baby Archie, ‘This Is His Culture. This Is His Background’

Dawn Porter Discusses Prince Harry’s Reaction When He Received Gift for Baby Archie, ‘This Is His Culture. This Is His Background’

The world has been caught up with the news of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s latest addition to the family. The royal couple introduced Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor, named partly after Prince Harry’s mother, Diana, and his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth (Lilibet is the family nickname for the Queen), earlier this week.

On a recent episode of theGrio‘s podcast, “Acting Up” with Cortney Wills, award-winning director Dawn Porter discusses working with Oprah Winfrey and Prince Harry on the new Apple+ series, “The Me You Don’t See.” She talked about how her gift for the royal couple’s Baby Archie was received by Prince Harry when she initially went to meet him for the first time.

Porter stated, “I don’t know what you give a prince, but I figured he had everything and he had a baby. So why do we only give women the gifts? We were finishing up ‘The Way I See It’ and we were filming in the African-American Museum at the Smithsonian,” she explained. “So I went to the gift store and I got him like a red, black and green onesie and some books about brown babies and like, loving yourself. And so I put this little package together.”

After she presented this package to Prince Harry, she got an unexpected reaction.

“He flipped out. He loved it. He was like, ‘This is his culture. This is his background’ and he just couldn’t get over the gift. He kept remarking on it. Prince Harry strikes me as very curious and very respectful and I think despite the fact that he comes from where he comes from, he also feels a little bit like an outsider. And so I think he really understands and has a lot of empathy and a lot more in common with people of different races than most people think.”

Ben Crump, CNN’s Bakari Sellers Among Speakers To Kick Off Black Enterprise Economic Equity & Racial Justice Town Hall Series June 10

BLACK ENTERPRISE, the No. 1 Black media brand reaching more than 8 million unique visitors per month and leading business resources for Black entrepreneurs and corporate executive, will kick off its Economic Equity & Racial Justice Town Hall Series: “Closing The Wealth Gap” on Thursday, June 10 from 7 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. as some of the nation’s leading business, political and civil right leaders review how Blacks can gain greater economic and financial empowerment.

Civil rights attorney Ben Crump, CNN political commentator Bakari Sellers, Manulife Vice President of Talent Management Tara John, Black Executive CMO Alliance founder Jerri DeVard, and Infor Chairman and Black Economic Alliance Co-Chairman Charles Phillips  will serve as the speakers for the session, “One Year After George Floyd: Has Corporate America Made Good On Its Economic Equity Pledges?”

Hosted by global insurer Manulife, the event is the first of seven such virtual roundtable discussions. Black Enterprise has also partnered with The Executive Leadership Council (ELC), the pre-eminent global organization focused on developing Black corporate C-suite and board leaders that serves as the Town Hall l series sponsor.

Remarks will also be delivered by Manulife President & CEO Roy Gori, Executive Leadership Council President & CEO Michael Hyter, and BLACK ENTERPRISE CEO Earl “Butch” Graves Jr.

Graves Jr. noted that many large corporations made diversity pledges last year amid the resurgence of the Black Lives Matter movement, but it’s up to Blacks to hold corporate America accountable and ensure corporations keep their promises.

“Corporate pledges of commitment to diversity and inclusion are not new to Black people in corporate America,” Graves said. “However, if we are to achieve economic equity, we must hold corporate America accountable for making sure that the billions of dollars pledged during the past year in the name of ending systemic racism results in systemic change — including actual wealth creation — for Black people both inside and outside of their companies.”

The events and discussions in the series will look through a range of challenges affecting the Black community today and will seek to advance the state of the Black community, assist Black professionals in gaining more C-suite and board positions, increase capital and funding opportunities for Black-owned businesses and ensure corporate America continues to promote and push diversity and equity.

Complimentary registration and a complete schedule of the BLACK ENTERPRISE Economic Equity & Racial Justice Town Hall Series can be seen here.

Twitter Reacts to Candace Owens Being ‘Totally Fine With Jodie Turner Playing the Role of Anne Boleyn’

Twitter Reacts to Candace Owens Being ‘Totally Fine With Jodie Turner Playing the Role of Anne Boleyn’

When we are looking for a controversy to ensue, we always know we can count on a young lady named Candace Owens to fill the order!

There have been rumblings regarding the news of Black actress Jodie Turner-Smith being selected to play the role of King Henry VIII of England’s second wife, Anne Boleyn in a project for U.K.’s Channel 5. White people are outraged that a Black woman was selected to play the part of a white woman. The three-part miniseries is being called a “propulsive psychological thriller, told from a new perspective.”

The controversial conservative is known for stirring people up with her commentary, specifically when it comes to anything having to do with Black people. She chimed in last week with a Twitter post.

Twitter users, as expected, responded:

Mayweather vs Paul: A Boring And Bad Fight Made Mayweather Millions; $30 Million From His Trunks Alone

In what has to be Floyd Mayweather’s most disappointing bout arguably, his special exhibition match with YouTube celebrity Logan Paul shows that the retired boxer will fight anyone so long as the money is right. It does not risk his undefeated reputation.

As reported by The New York Times, Mayweather versus Paul, both highly regarded figures known for being energetic and unpredictable, ended with their own fans booing them for being boring.

The fight between the quick and agile 44-year-old Mayweather and the 26-year-old inexperienced and much heavier at 189 lbs Paul lasted up to its eighth round.

For the most part, the veteran brawler did not do much, and the scorecard revealed it.

The former professional boxer taunted Paul, who threw wild blows to his guarded hands. Paul eventually tired himself out but managed to pull off some lucky shots.

The recurring annoyance in the fight was that both fighters were clinching more than one might expect between two livewire personalities.

https://twitter.com/NedsAus/status/1401787368491737090?s=20

It would be remiss not to point out how sweaty and exhausted both men looked entering the fifth round, with Paul, who is much taller than Mayweather, leaning and breathing heavily on his opponent.

https://twitter.com/defnoodles/status/1401747908731408391?s=20

Even as Paul’s jabs and haymakers connected, few actually did any damage, and Mayweather was still in control of the fight. Paul landed 28 of his 217 punches, while Mayweather connected on 43 of his 107, The Guardian reported.

Although the fight ended without anyone getting knocked out, people on social media were quick to suggest that Mayweather, indeed, knocked out Paul for a split second and held him up in the seventh round.

One cynical theory on why Mayweather would save his opponent is that he wanted to make the spectacle fight longer for his fans.

The fight ended with the live audience booing as they witnessed what many are calling the lamest Mayweather fight in his retirement. There were no judges nor an official winner, making the pay-per-view match feel like a glorified sparring match. However, anyone with common sense would say Mayweather won, but at the same time, he simultaneously lost some respect from the fight community that hails him as one of the greatest.

The money-making machine is expected to cash in between $50 million and $100 million, including his 50% cut of pay-per-view earnings. Paul is expected to get paid less—he is guaranteed $250,000 and a 10% cut of pay-per-view earnings.

In addition, Mayweather reportedly made $30 million from his sponsored ethereummax.org trunks, according to MarketWatch.

The pay-per-view match, which took place in Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium this past Sunday, cost about $50.

Twin Girls at Washington Middle School Given Class Assignment To Pick Cotton

Twin Girls at Washington Middle School Given Class Assignment To Pick Cotton

Apparently, they are still picking cotton in the state of Washington.

According to ABC News, a mother calls for the firing of school officials after a Spokane, Washington, middle school teacher gave an assignment deemed racially insensitive. The woman’s twin daughters were in a social studies class that was reportedly asked to pick cotton. The twins were the only students of color in the class.

Brandi Feazell, the mother of the girls, was informed by her 14-year-old daughters that their teacher at Sacajawea Middle School had asked students to pick cotton in a race to see who could pick it the fastest. This was in line with what Black slaves had to do when they were forced to pick cotton on plantations in the South.

The twins Emzayia and Zyeshauwne Feazell said this incident took place on May 3. The teacher pulled out a box of raw cotton and told the class they were going to do a “fun” activity.

“I was shocked that a teacher would bring a box of cotton into a class and tell them to pick it clean so she could teach us how slaves were back then,” Emzayia told KXYL.

Spokane Public Schools has released a statement regarding the incident:

“Spokane Public Schools recently received a complaint regarding a classroom lesson on the Industrial Revolution at Sacajawea Middle School. Upon receiving the complaint, SPS promptly solicited a third-party investigator to fully understand the situation. We will share the investigation’s findings as soon as they are available. SPS is committed to transparency, as well as making sure all our students, families, and staff feel supported and heard.”

The family is requesting that the social studies teacher and other school officials be disciplined for how they handled the incident. They are also calling for the removal of Skidmore, as well as a formal apology from the school district.

Sacajawea Middle School isn’t a diverse learning institution. 72% of the 785 enrolled students are white.
