Three Officers Charged in Manuel Ellis Death After He Said ‘I Can’t Breathe’

One year after Manuel Ellis died during a police encounter, three officers have been charged in connection with his murder.

The Washington state Attorney General Bob Ferguson charged two Tacoma police officers with murder and one with manslaughter in the death of Ellis, NPR reports. The 33-year-old had told the officers that he couldn’t breathe as he was being restrained on March 3, 2020.

Witness reports filed in Pierce County Superior Court say officers Christopher Burbank and Matthew Collins, who are both white, charged at Ellis without provocation as officer Timothy Rankine, who is Asian, applied pressure on Ellis’ back. His last words “I can’t breathe, sir!” were heard on a nearby security camera.

“Ellis was not fighting back,” the probable cause statement said. “All three civilian witnesses at the intersection … state that they never saw Ellis strike at the officers.”

On Thursday, Ferguson charged Burbank and Collins with second-degree murder and first-degree manslaughter against Rankine. All three officers were placed in custody by Thursday evening and were scheduled to be arraigned Friday morning, ABC News reports. The move is groundbreaking for the state as it’s the first time the Attorney General’s office has criminally charged police officers with unlawful use of deadly force.

The Tacoma Police Union defended the three officers claiming “facts were ignored in favor of what appears to be a politically motivated witch hunt.”

“We look forward to trial,” the union said in a statement Thursday. “An unbiased jury will find that the officers broke no laws and, in fact, acted in accordance with the law, their training, and Tacoma Police Department policies. An unbiased jury will not allow these fine public servants to be sacrificed at the altar of public sentiment.”

If found guilty, all three officers could face up to life in prison with the standard sentence ranging from 10 to 18 years for second-degree murder with no prior criminal history and 6.5 to 8.5 years for manslaughter with no prior criminal history, NY Times reports.

Interim Tacoma Police Chief Mike Ake announced an internal investigation into the case to determine what disciplinary actions, training, and policy changes need to be made.

“Conversations and actions regarding police reform are as important as ever,” Ake said. “We realize we must reduce outcomes that cause pain and diminish trust within our community.”

Naomi Osaka Refusing Post-Game Interviews At French Open To Protect Her Mental Health

Naomi Osaka is playing the game of tennis. Sis isn’t playing when it comes to her mental health.

The 4x Grand Slam title holder is gearing up to compete in the French Open and is already setting her boundaries when it comes to press interviews. On Wednesday, the tennis champion took to Twitter to announce that she won’t be speaking with any media during the Roland-Garros tournament to preserve her mental health, Huff Post reports.

“I’ve often felt that people have no regard for athletes mental health and this rings very true whenever I see a press conference or partake in one,” she said in a statement shared in a tweet. “I’m just not going to subject myself to people that doubt me. I’ve watched many clips of athletes breaking down after a loss in the press room and I know you have as well. I believe that whole situation is kicking a person while they’re down and I don’t understand the reasoning behind it.”

Professional tennis players are fined thousands in the event they skip out on attending a mandated post-game press conference where they’re often asked about their loss or game slipups. But despite the expected loss to her multi-million dollar net worth, Osaka is solely focused on representing Japan at the French Open.

In her statement, Osaka expressed her hopes that the amount she is fined “ will go towards a mental health charity.”

“If the organizations think that they can keep saying, “do your press or you’re going to be fined”, and continue to ignore the mental health of the athletes that are the centerpiece of their cooperation then I just gotta laugh,” she wrote.

Back in 2016, Serena Williams was issued a $5,000 fine after she refused to interview about her early departure from the Australia Open, The Guardian reports. It looks like Osaka is following in Williams’s footsteps in more ways than one.

Akon Had His Range Rover Stolen at an Atlanta Gas Station

Singer and rapper Akon, whose real name is Aliaune Damala Badara Akon Thiam, got his SUV stolen in broad daylight while he was at the gas station.

On Monday 30 minutes before midnight, someone from Atlanta, Georgia, entered the producer’s vehicle and drove off while it was being pumped, according to Uproxxx reported.

Akon contacted the police and report his Range Rover as stolen from a Buckhead gas station.

The Range Rover also had valuable items such as $25,000 diamond necklace and a $6,500 Louis Vuitton bag.

Akon has no idea who could have done this, but a black sedan following his stolen SUV.

“Shortly after, you can see the suspect get out of the passenger seat of what looks to be a black, four-door BMW sedan, get into the driver’s seat of the victim’s vehicle, and drive off with the black BMW following right behind,” police said in the report, The Atlanta Journal Constitution reported.

Thankfully for the musician, Akon had his iPhone inside the car. Using the FindMyPhone app to track his phone and stolen car to Lawton Street in southwest Atlanta and again on Forest Park – the latter being the authorities recovered his SUV.

There are currently no suspects in the case.

These crimes have been dubbed slider crimes and they happen when a thief slides into your vehicle to steal the vehicle itself or steal something inside of it,” police spokesman Officer Steve Avery said in a public service announcement filmed last year. “Always lock your car and turn it off when you step outside.”

It is not just Akon either. Rapper and Fast and Furious star Ludcris must have been furious when someone pull a fast one and took his Mercedes-Benz when he was at the ATM.

Tamron Hall Raises Domestic Violence Awareness At The Intersection Of Pet Care With Purina

BRProud reported that award-winning journalist and nationally syndicated talk show host Tamron Hall is using her voice to raise awareness about the relationship between domestic violence survivors and their pets, through her advocacy of Purina’s Purple Leash Project with RedRover. In the interview, Hall stated that goal with the  project, along with Purina, is by 2025 is to have 25 percent of shelters for survivors of domestic violence to be specially equipped to take the family pet with them.

According to the interview, a year and a half ago, Hall learned that 48% of survivors of domestic violence do not leave their homes where abuse is occurring because they cannot take their pets to the shelter.

“So they know that there is help for them, but they can’t leave that ‘fur family member,’ if you will behind, and I understand that being pet owner and a pet lover. I could never imagine though, being in that situation…and saying, Okay, what do I do?’ Hall said. “And that’s where we want to step in and help people to make that decision to say not only can we help you, but we’re going to help your pet as well.”

Hall lost her sister to a domestic violence issue. She ultimately began shining a light on the tough topic to help others. In 2016, PEOPLE reported that Hall was initially hesitant about sharing a story about her sister who continued a relationship with the man who was later named as the only person of interest in the murder  investigation.

“But due to a lack of evidence, no arrests were made and the case remains an unsolved homicide,” PEOPLE reported in the interview.

Last year, Hall also told told the Guidepost that she uses her voice whenever she can to help victims of domestic violence. She launched the Tamron ♥ Renate Fund  to support Safe Horizon and help victims and their families, in memory of her sister. On the website, Safe Horizon is described as the nation’s leading victim assistance organization which works survivors of all forms of violence.

Hall is making additional progress with advocacy work while currently joining forces with Purina. The information provided on Purina’s website said that The Purple Leash Project began nearly seven years ago, when an associate read about the difficult decision that many domestic violence survivors with pets were being forced to make. Civil Rights Leaders Joseph and Evelyn Lowery’s Papers Secured by Morehouse College, Shared With Clark Atlanta University

Civil Rights Leaders Joseph and Evelyn Lowery’s Papers Secured by Morehouse College, Shared With Clark Atlanta University

Morehouse College has secured the papers of Joseph and Evelyn Lowery, two of the most instrumental figures in the civil rights and created the Southern Christian Leadership Conference with Martin Luther King Jr. and others, to its library, The Atlanta Journal Constitution.

On Wednesday, the Atlanta HBCU will have the  Lowery family’s personal papers, photographs, documents, writings, speeches, notes, travel diaries and other mementos as donations.

“No discussion about civil rights in America will ever be complete without referencing the contributions of Joseph and Evelyn Lowery,” Morehouse College President David A. Thomas said.

The school which already has the King Papers will treat  the Lowery collection the same: it is archived and curated at the Atlanta University Center’s Robert W. Woodruff Library and it is be used by scholars, researchers and students on a digitized platform online.

Cheryl Lowery, president and CEO of the Joseph and Evelyn Lowery Institute for Justice and Human Rights and the youngest daughter of the couple, sured the financing for the digitized papers from an anonymous donor.

At a competing HBCU, Clark Atlanta University, already has the Joseph and Evelyn Lowery Institute for Justice and Human Rights, and this year marks its 20th anniversary. It will also have the papers.

“Clark Atlanta University has always been at the forefront of the civil rights movement and a part of its history,” CAU President George T. French Jr. said. “This historic collection will serve as invaluable resources for our scholars during their matriculation at CAU.”

Cheryl has no problem sharing the papers, saying it makes perfect sense be shared among the different AUC schools and joint library.

“My father operated in the spirit that the world was his parish,” Cheryl said. “His words and works knew no walls and extended beyond the pulpit into the streets and the suites. In that spirit, it is fitting that the Joseph Echols Lowery and Evelyn Gibson Lowery Collection will be owned by, housed on, and fully accessible to the Atlanta University Center Schools, which they loved and by which they were loved.”

Founders Brooks and Austin Davis built their first exhibit in Atlanta but expanded to Maryland due to popular demand, according to WUSA 9.

“We kept getting all kinds of comments and emails saying ‘Where are you going next?’ and believe it or not the DMV was our most requested area,” Brooks said in the interview.

The dcist said that the museum creates a nostalgic experience to celebrate the diversity and evolution of Black hair throughout the decades. Additionally, ticket holders may walk through the eras of Black hair and pose for photo ops throughout the interactive space which combines the founders’ passions for graphic design and photography.

“Austin-Davis travels the country capturing photos of Black women, whether it’s for a specific project or to capture their beauty and union on their wedding day. Brooks owns a merchandise company that features products with sayings from Black women. One t-shirt design says, “My hair is poppin’’’ and another says “Thou shall not touch my hair,” the dcist also mentioned.

Brooks also told the dcist that it was really important for the friends to create installations that tapped into shared nostalgic moments, in addition to creating spaces that foster self-love. The interview revealed that the women wanted to reinforce the message that your hair, no matter how you choose to wear it, is beautiful.

Coach Suspended and Fined $10,000 After Body Shaming WNBA Player During Game

A male basketball coach from the Woman’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) has been suspended and fined $10,000 due to inappropriate and offensive comments he made about a basketball player.

The basketball coach, Curt Miller, who is the head coach and general manager for the Connecticut Sun is being disciplined because of his body-shaming comments directed towards the Las Vegas Aces’ Liz Cambage.

The WNBA released a statement earlier this week pertaining to the incident.

“Connecticut Sun Head Coach & General Manager Curt Miller has been fined $10,000 and suspended for one game for a comment he made to a game official regarding Liz Cambage of the Las Vegas Aces, the WNBA announced today. Miller, who made the comment during the Sun’s 72-65 win over the Aces at Michelob ULTRA Arena, has acknowledged that his comment was inappropriate and offensive. Miller will serve his suspension tomorrow when the Sun visit the Seattle Storm.”

Cambage took to her Instagram to go live to speak about the disrespectful comment.

“If there’s one thing about me, it’s that I will never let a man disrespect me. Ever. Ever. Ever. Especially, a little white one. To the coach of Connecticut, I’m sorry little sir man I do not know your name, but the next time you try to call out a referee trying to get a call being like, ‘Come on, she 300 pounds,’ I’m going to need you to get it right, baby, cause I’m 6-8, I’m weighing, I just double-checked because I love to be correct and give facts, I’m weighing 235 pounds and I’m very proud of being a big b*tch, a big buddy, big Benz baby. So, don’t ever try to disrespect me or another woman in the league.”

“I don’t know if that’s how coaches run, like you try to disrespect women like that from the sideline? You’re so lucky that it was during a game,” Cambage added. “That little man, like little, tiny, where is you? Stop trying to protect your insecurities baby. Pick up the phone, call the psych, because you’re projecting some bullsh*t.”

The coach released a statement apologizing for his comment.
