Saint Augustine University Continues To Fight To Keep Accreditation

Burgess also admitted that choices made by leadership put the university in its wobbly position.

St. Augustine’s Interim President Dr. Marcus Burgess told Spectrum News that the North Carolina university has filed an injunction against the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) in order to keep its accreditation under a probation agreement.

Phyllis Worthy Dawkins recently discussed similarities in the fight for accreditation faced by Saint Augustine University and Bennett College. Dawkins presided over Bennett College from 2017-2019 when the university dealt with its own accreditation issues.

It’s hard when you possibly could lose an institution,” Dawkins told WRAL. “We had to raise $5 million in 60 days. Oh, that was a wild 60 days, but we did it.”

St. Augustine currently owes $20 million to SACSCOC.

“We disagree with the decision made by SACSCOC and plan to appeal to a higher authority with evidence supporting the institution’s progress in resolving non-compliance,” Burgess said. “We will move quickly to file a lawsuit against SACSCOC seeking an injunction that, if granted, will allow Saint Augustine’s University to remain accredited with SACSCOC on Probation for Good Cause until the conclusion of litigation.”

Burgess also admitted to the outlet that choices made by leadership helped put the university in the position it is in.

“Leadership decisions ultimately put us in some of the positions that we are in now. And so we are trying to make sure that we believe we place sound financial structures in place. We are working with a group, the Terminus Municipal Group, to help us right-size some of our debt, more importantly, create some best practices on the fiscal side of the house.”

Burgess was also concerned about the students, saying that not being able to give them their refund checks put them in a position to suffer.

Students are preparing to leave St. Augustine’s campus as the university plans to move to a remote learning curriculum in April. As WRAL reported, students are being asked to move out by April 3.

Others are calling on the St. Augustine University Board of Trustees to step down. Dr. John Larkins, a 1966 graduate of the university as well as a former trustee of the board, issued a statement to the outlet, establishing long-standing concerns with the board.

“We believe and evidence shows the SAU Board of Trustees has breached its fiduciary duty to the university. The FY21 audit also states that the Board’s overall governance and oversight of the university were severely absent.”

Larkins continued, “Alumni have expressed major concerns about the board’s governance of SAU for the past five years. The National Alumni Association outlined a list of significant concerns and approved a vote of no confidence in the SAU Board of Trustees in 2020.”

Arrest, Child Abuse

Baton Rouge Mother Arrested After Child Found With Gunshot Wound

Arieana Scott's 4-year-old son is in critical condition after the child gained access to an illegal firearm modified with a "Glock switch."

A Louisiana mother was taken into custody after her 4-year-old child gained access to a firearm and inadvertently shot himself on the morning of March 20.

Authorities arrested 22-year-old Arieana Scott after an investigation found her young son obtained an illegally modified handgun. The child is in critical condition at a local hospital.

According to WBRZ, Scott, who has been booked into East Baton Rouge Prison, faces multiple charges, including improper parental supervision of a minor, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession with intent to distribute Schedule I narcotics, possession of a firearm in proximity to controlled substances and possession of a machine gun.

The arrest affidavit revealed the mother claimed she was in her bedroom when a loud noise went off inside the home. She disregarded it and went back to sleep. She called out for her child shortly after she woke up, but the boy was unresponsive, lying in a pool of blood.

In her initial statement, Scott allegedly denied any knowledge of the handgun’s presence due to her prior felony record. However, under persistent interrogation, she ultimately confessed that the firearm had been in her bedroom closet. She was reportedly puzzled as to how her child obtained it.

Allegedly, the 4-year-old was playing with a gun that Baton Rouge Police Chief “TJ” Morse told WBRZ was illegally modified with a “Glock switch,” “a conversion switch attached to it which would make it an automatic weapon.” The outlet reported that Glock switches, which are capable of rapid fire, were made illegal by the state in 2023.

Morse said his team of officers were the first on the scene and started rendering medical aid as soon as they found the child in the bed, working until EMTs arrived.

According to the Baton Rouge Police Department, the shooting incident occurred at approximately 9:27 a.m. on March 20 at 2212 69th Avenue.

Dwyane Wade And Gabrielle Union Start ‘College Visits Season’ With Zaya At University of Washington

Dwyane Wade and Gabrielle Union-Wade are getting their daughter Zaya Wade ready for college with their first campus visit.

Dwyane Wade and Gabrielle Union-Wade are getting their daughter Zaya Wade ready for college with their first campus visit.

The NBA champion took to Instagram on Sunday, March 24, to announce the Wade family’s start of “College Visits season.” Dwyane, 42, and Gabrielle, 51, accompanied Zaya, 16, on a tour of the University of Washington in Seattle.

Photos and videos showed the family enjoying their walk around campus where they looked at the greenery, campus architecture, and study spaces the Pacific Northwest college has to offer. Gabrielle could be seen smiling while speaking to a campus tour guide.

Dwyane shared some photos on his Instagram Story that showed a picture of the library’s elaborate ceiling and another Seattle tourist spot he visited, the Pike Place Market.

Whatever school Zaya does choose, she’s sure to be a hit with her growing influence and popularity. The celebrity teen boasts a resume that includes serving and slaying as a model, influencer, and LGBTQ+ activist. Last month she covered her first-ever fashion magazine cover for DAZED where she opened up about her growth in fashion and personally since coming out as transgender in 2020.

“I mean, a lot of attention equals a lot more hate, a lot of transphobia, and [there is] a lot of pressure on me, but I’m also able to reach more people,” Zaya shared. “The positives of having such an inclusive platform completely outweigh all of the negativity online, which my support system has enabled me to filter out.”

However, Zaya doesn’t let the criticism and trolls break her down as she is focused more on the community she represents and the voice she provides.

“It has allowed me to let in the positivity and distribute it to all of the trans people in the world who need a voice and give them a platform to get inspired to live with themselves without being afraid,” she added.

Tax Refunds, IRS, 2020

IRS Warns Americans To Claim Over $1B In 2020 Tax Refunds Before They Expire

The IRS has issued a warning to taxpayers across the United States, cautioning they may lose over $1 billion in unclaimed tax refunds.

The Internal Revenue Service has issued a stark warning to taxpayers across the United States, cautioning that they may be leaving over $1 billion in unclaimed tax refunds on the table, according to The Associated Press. As the May 17 deadline looms, approximately 940,000 individuals are urged to take immediate action to submit their tax returns for the 2020 tax year.

With an average median refund of $932 for 2020, states like Texas, California, Florida, and New York have the largest number of potentially eligible recipients. IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel emphasized the situation’s urgency, stating, “We want taxpayers to claim these refunds, but time is running out…taxpayers should start soon to make sure they don’t miss out.”

Werfel stressed the importance of reviewing records promptly to avoid missing the deadline, noting that some individuals may not even realize they are owed a refund. As tax season commenced on Jan. 29, over 71.5 million individual tax filings have already been submitted to the IRS this year.

If they need to file a return, the IRS recommends that individuals procure vital documents like W-2s, 1098s, 1099s, or 5498s from their respective employers or banks. Alternatively, taxpayers can access the “Get Transcript Online” tool on IRS.gov, which enables them to request a complimentary wage and income transcript.

Although the customary deadline typically coincides with April 15, this year’s elongation to May 17, instigated by the COVID-19 pandemic, offers a brief respite. However, failing to file returns for the tax years 2021 and 2022 may result in the retention of 2020 refunds until those commitments are met.

According to CNET, a portion of your refund may have been redirected to settle outstanding debts, including federal and state taxes, unemployment compensation, child support, spousal support, or other federal obligations such as student loans. If you anticipated receiving a refund for the tax year 2021 but found it absent upon filing your previous tax return, your refund may have been offset.

The IRS oversees refund offsets related to overdue federal taxes, and affected individuals should expect to receive a notification from the agency clarifying the offset.

Houston ‘Bishop’ Sentenced 3 Years For Marrying 10 Women, Two Months After Getting Probation For Bigamy

A traveling self-proclaimed "bishop" has been sentenced to three years in prison for bigamy just two months after receiving probation for the same offense.

A self-proclaimed traveling “bishop” has been sentenced to three years in prison for bigamy just two months after receiving probation for the same offense.

Orlando Coleman, 51, received jail time two months after marrying a third woman despite being placed on probation for marrying two other women at the same time, Click 2 Houston reports. Coleman is accused of being a “con man” who presented himself as a bishop who traveled to churches around the country. He’s suspected of having married at least 10 women in different states for his own financial gain.

Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg issued the sentencing at a March 11 hearing.

“At the heart of this repeat offender’s schemes was a plan to defraud women and take advantage of them for financial gain,” Ogg said. “This man used the church to camouflage his scams and hide from any accountability or responsibility.”

Since 2019, Coleman reportedly entered into three marriages with three different women. In 2021, he married a woman in Houston. Five months into the marriage, the woman learned that Coleman was receiving money from a woman in Virginia.

Upon speaking to the Virginia woman, she learned she had been married to Coleman since 2019. After the Houston woman contacted authorities, the Harris County Sheriff’s Office investigated and filed bigamy charges against the traveling bishop.

The sentencing comes nearly one year after Coleman pleaded guilty to bigamy in July 2023. He received three years of deferred adjudication probation in exchange for the guilty plea but managed to get himself in trouble for the same offense. Coleman’s probation was revoked and he was sentenced to three years in prison.

Coleman is described by his victims as a “con man” who married them for room, board, and money, Assistant District Attorney Vanessa Goussen said. She offered advice to women who want to avoid being victims of such crimes.

“Run a background check, if possible, or try searching their name on the internet, look at their social media, and ask a lot of questions,” Goussen said. “Unfortunately, many con artists hide behind important sounding titles, and it is easier than you think to get swept off your feet.”

Diddy May Be Down Bad, But He Did Secure His Bag

Sean "Diddy" Combs is no longer an owner at Revolt TV after selling off his shares to an anonymous buyer for an undisclosed amount.

Sean “Diddy” Combs is no longer an owner at Revolt TV after selling off his shares to an anonymous buyer for an undisclosed amount.

The hip-hop mogul is seeing a drastic fall from grace due to a series of sexual assault and misconduct lawsuits and allegations of operating a sex trafficking ring. Amid the mounting legal woes, which include having his homes in Los Angeles and Miami raided on Monday, March 25, sources say Combs decided to officially separate himself from the media company he founded in 2013.

Sources say Combs sold his Revolt TV shares to an interested buyer but made sure that the company remains Black-owned, TMZ reports. The anonymous buyer wants to remain unknown for the time being. However, it makes sense given all the negative press surrounding the company’s former owner.

According to insiders, Combs and the new Revolt boss share a passion for Black culture and want to keep the deal under wraps until a formal announcement in the near future. Combs was reportedly notified that the sale was finalized this week.

There will reportedly be no staff changes. Revolt’s CEO Detavio Samuels and Chief Brand Officer Deon Graham will remain in their current positions and assist the new owner until they implement their vision for the company.

The sale comes after Combs stepped down from Revolt last November following a series of shocking lawsuits from women accusing him of sexual assault. At the time, the media platform released a statement announcing Combs’ departure as company chairman.

“Sean Combs has stepped down from his position as chairman of Revolt. While Mr. Combs has previously had no operational or day-to-day role in the business, this decision helps to ensure that Revolt remains steadfastly focused on our mission to create meaningful content for the culture and amplify the voices of all Black people throughout this country and the African diaspora.”

Amid news of the Revolt TV sale, it’s being speculated if Combs knew a federal raid was on the way. Many were shocked to see video footage showing federal agents, including Homeland Security Investigative officials, conducting coordinated raids at his two homes in Miami and Los Angeles.

The raids came one month after a music producer filed a lawsuit against Combs accusing him of running a sex trafficking operation. Sources say three women and a man have been interviewed by federal officials in Manhattan in relation to allegations of sex trafficking, sexual assault, and the solicitation and distribution of illegal narcotics and firearms.

Woman Repurchases Texas Property Racist Mob Drove Family From Decades Ago

Opal Lee, 97, prepares to move back to the same property a mob of around 500 people drove her family from more than 80 years ago.

Opal Lee, a 97-year-old activist who was forced out of her Fort Worth, Texas, home by a racist mob when she was 12 years old, is preparing to move into her brand new home on the same property.

During a March 21 ceremony, Lee lifted up the first wall of the project, according to NBC News, which reported that the home is anticipated to be move-in ready by June 19, Juneteenth. Lee helped establish the day as a national holiday.

The day will also mark the 85th anniversary of the fateful event when an enraged mob of around 500 people amassed outside her parents’ home, incensed that a Black family had purchased the lot in the neighborhood. Lee and her siblings were sent to a friend’s house before her parents eventually abandoned the property themselves as windows were broken and furniture was dragged out of the home by the growing mob.

“Those people tore that place asunder,” Lee recalled.

“My God-fearing, praying parents,” who she said never spoke about the incident, “worked extremely hard, and they bought another home.” She added, “They didn’t get angry and get frustrated; they simply knew that we had to have a place to stay.”

Learning of Trinity Habitat for Humanity’s ownership of the property, Lee reached out to her longtime friend Gage Yager, the CEO of the organization. Unaware of his friend’s history with the property, Yager ensured it wasn’t promised elsewhere and offered the property to Lee for $10. At the ceremony, he was excited to see so many people gather in love on the same property a mob had once gathered in hate.

“You demonstrate to us what a difference one person can make,” Nelson Mitchell of HistoryMaker Homes, the company building her home pro bono, told Lee at the ceremony. Lee has become renowned as the “Grandmother of Juneteenth” for her pivotal role in Juneteenth. The former teacher and counselor has dedicated decades to improving Fort Worth, including establishing a large community garden.

Lee is ready to move back to her childhood property with her parents on her mind. “I know my mom would be smiling down, and my dad. He’d think: ’Well, we finally got it done,’” she said.

Furnishing for the home will be funded by Texas Capital Financial Services.

Diddy Possibly Shut Down Access To Data On His Personal Plane Amid Federal Raid

New reports reveal the stop placed on flight tracker data for a private plane owned by Sean "Diddy" Combs.

New reports reveal the possible stop placed on flight tracker data for a private plane owned by Sean “Diddy” Combs. The halt came amid a sweeping federal raid on two of Combs’ properties.

The Bad Boy founder has been in the headlines the raids Monday, March 25, which occurred at one of his two Star Island homes in Miami and his home in Los Angeles. Federal agents were authorized to search the properties by warrants issued in Manhattan federal court a month after a lawsuit from a music producer accused Combs of being the leader of a sex-trafficking organization.

As the raids took place, flight tracker information from Flight Aware surfaced online that showed Combs’ LoveAir USA LLC-owned Gulfstream G550 having embarked to several destinations in California before landing in Antigua on Monday, TMZ reports. However, shortly after the flight tracker information was made public, a prompt on FlightAware.com claimed, “This aircraft is not available for public tracking per request from the owner/operator.”

https://twitter.com/rawsalerts/status/1772416974833782964

Now it’s being speculated that Combs or someone from his team requested to stop flight trackage on the private jet. The plane has since landed in Antigua after traveling from Los Angeles on Monday.

FlightAware spokeswoman Kathleen Bangs said it’s not unusual for plane owners, particularly celebrities, politicians, or other public figures, to request flight tracking data be blocked from the site, The Miami Herald reports. If done through the FAA’s privacy application process, FlightAware honors such requests. However, it remains unclear when LoveAir LLC made the request.

Diddy has since been seen pacing outside Miami airport after his homes were raided. Photos also showed his sons, Justin and Christian Combs, being detained during the raid in Los Angeles.

It’s reported that three women and one man were interviewed in New York by authorities in connection to an investigation into Combs’s allegations of sex trafficking, sexual assault, and the solicitation and distribution of illegal narcotics and firearms. Phones were seized from the raid on Combs’ Miami property.

“Earlier today, Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) New York executed law enforcement actions as part of an ongoing investigation, with assistance from HSI Los Angeles, HSI Miami, and our local law enforcement partners,” Homeland Security said in a statement.
