Meet the Founder of the First Black-Owned Brand Approved by the National Eczema Association

Meet Jocelyne Firmin, CEO and founder of Kiyamel, a skincare brand for people who suffer from eczema. Based in Millsboro, Delaware, her company is currently celebrating being the first and only Black-owned brand approved by The National Eczema Association.

Jocelyne migrated from Haiti to the United States thanks to a full scholarship in the pursuit of the American dream. She was born in extreme poverty and was raised by a single mother who understood that the only way out of it was through education and entrepreneurship. From a very early age, Jocelyne was exposed to the entrepreneurial lifestyle by accompanying her mother working in the open markets of Haiti. In retrospect developing her own passion for entrepreneurship, hence the skincare line was created.

Kiyamel is a skincare brand that was founded in 2019 but did not become operational until January 2021. Realizing that nearly thirty million people in America suffer from some form of eczema, several years were spent doing research and development on this unique skincare brand. For instance, fifty-five percent of people that suffer from eczema cannot find an adequate solution.

Moreover, a black child is 1.7 times more likely to develop eczema than a white child, causing experts to believe that it may be underdiagnosed because physicians have been primarily trained to diagnose eczema on white skin. Black children are thirty percent less likely to see a doctor for their eczema than white children, and those who see a doctor have more visits and prescriptions than white children.

Likewise, Kiyamel was created to close that gap by providing wholesome all-natural products, composed and delivered with love and empathy. The natural products not only help heal you but it builds back self-esteem that can be harmed with skin conditions. Kiyamel is easily accessible online and in stores without a prescription. Per Jocelyne, “I’ve always suffered from severe acne and dry skin so I set out to find a solution for myself since nothing under the sun could work. Being a native of Haiti and a lover of nature, I knew I wanted a clean formula. However, when my daughter was born and developed eczema at only six weeks old, the premise of the formula was immediately switched, from acne to eczema. With the help of a chemist, the eczema product line was born.”

Kiyamel’s products are 100% natural, clinically tested and have become the first Black-owned
company to be accepted by the National Eczema Association. Nevertheless, there were many hurdles to overcome, such as gaining access to venture capital. That was and still is the company’s main obstacle.

Additionally, sourcing and packaging clean ingredients as they are is a costly venture. As well as getting the connection and the support needed to get into major retail stores. For instance, last year, funds were invested to attend a tradeshow.

It was quite informative, although, challenges and obstacles still endured; more so than their white counterparts since their product is still fairly new. For clarity’s sake, Kiyamel’s products have been clinically tested and accepted by the highest and most prestigious entity in the industry: the National Eczema Association. Four (4) of the product have endured a very extensive and rigorous process which they passed. Furthermore, by maintaining that the products should work for every ethnicity, the goal has been to focus on serving the African American market to help compete with the lack of products in that industry. This means that most eczema products were not created with the African American consumer in mind furthering the premise that they don’t deliver results.

In the next several years, Kiyamel’s goal is set to perfect the craft with a 2% market penetration which it intends to accomplish by partnering with some of the major retail stores. Giving back to the community is equally important through a mentorship program. Basically, the goal of the company is to become one of America’s favorite eczema skincare brands.

Cardi B’s Album ‘Invasion Of Privacy’ First One That Has Every Song Go Platinum

Cardi B has only released one full-length album and has gone on to break several records with her debut disc. So has once again made history when that album became the only one to have every single record go platinum.

Chart Data has recently revealed that the Kodak Black rapper has achieved a feat that has never been done before, not even by other legendary artists. Her successful debut album, Invasion of Privacy which was released on April 6, 2018, became the first album in history to have every song on the album be certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).

Cardi B happily responded via social media.

Cardi has been breaking records as often as she releases them! In November of 2021, she had become the first female rapper to score two diamond (10 million units sold) certified records. Then, less than three weeks later, Cardi B breaks her own record by obtaining another diamond record!

Cardi B is the first female rapper to have three diamond records. Bodak Yellow, off her debut album, was her first. Girls Like You, which was recently certified diamond, is the second record that placed Cardi B in the history books! Now Cardi B’s 2018 single I Like It, which featured Bad Bunny and J Balvin, has recently been certified diamond by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), making it a record-breaking three diamond records for the award-winning artist.

The Bronx-bred Hip-Hop artist just recently emerged victorious in court when she won a defamation lawsuit that was filed against her in 2020. According to Complex, the Bronx rapper and her sister, Hennessy Carolina, were sued for defamation by several people they encountered in the Hamptons in Long Island, NY back in September 2020.

Rolling Stone reported that in New York, where the suit was filed, Judge William Condon dismissed the case stating that the lawsuit was “baseless.”

Earlier this year, the Grammy Award-winning rapper was paid nearly $3 million in punitive damages and attorneys fees after a jury found Tasha K, whose real name is Latasha Kebe, liable on counts of defamation, invasion of privacy, and infliction of emotional distress.

Variety reported the $3 million comes on top of the $1.25 million Cardi B was awarded.

Maya Portorreal Went From Making $45,000 A Year To Bringing In Over $350,000 Thanks To Her Sensitive Skin

Three years ago Maya Portorreal was a retail assistant for luxury apparel brand Pierre Hardy in New York City, making $45,000 a year.

Portorreal told CNBC’s Make It while working there, she grew frustrated most trendy jewelry was either way out of her price range or made with cheap materials that gave her rashes.

“I have very sensitive skin,” she told CNBC. “I can’t wear brass … I can’t really wear too much copper.”

Portorreal decided to solve the issue by herself launching the boutique brand Kitten Co. Jewelry, which makes affordable jewelry from skin-friendly materials. Kitten makes rings, necklaces, bracelets and anklets out of 92.5% sterling silver plated with rhodium, a metal coating the silver for “extra protection and shine.”.

The female entrepreneur started the business with less than $2,000 putting Kitten’s label on existing designs. Eventually, she started making her own designs and now Kitten features more than 150 different products.

She was able to grow the brand by reaching out to suppliers and manufacturers directly and leveraging social media and influencers to wear the jewelry in their posts.

Today, Portorreal’s business is a resounding success generating more than $30,000 a month in revenue and several high profile celebrities to wear her jewelry designs including the rapper Saweetie wore Kitten Co. Jewelry’s Maiko butterfly necklace in her music video for the single “Best Friend,” with fellow rapper Doja Cat.

Portorreal said she’s been pleasantly surprised by the success of her business and how fast it became popular.

“I never [predicted] making as much as I do now,” she said. “I never thought it would happen this quickly.”

It took several months for Portorreal to get Kitten off the ground but social media helped immensely as she was able to directly contact influencers and found some who wanted to work with her. Using their fanbases, the jewelry maker was able to reach people across different interests and localities to grow her brand.

The Will Smith Slap Meme Is Now a Minted Cryptocurrency Coin and NFT Art

The Will Smith Slap Meme Is Now a Minted Cryptocurrency Coin and NFT Art

You might think the Will Smith-Chris Rock incident is getting old, but others are just getting started as a digital coin of the slap has been minted.

According to Fortune, the coin was minted less than a day after the incident at the Oscars and has hit a record value of 469% over its first 24 hours. Additionally, NFT art of the slap has also been created.

A Will Smith Slap DAO NFT on OpenSea was said to be ranging from $7 to $86. The meme has created surges in the crypto market, but they won’t last long as Coindesk predicts the value will drop as time passes and the world moves on from the slap.

While Smith is still dealing with the backlash to his assault on Rock, which may include some kind of discipline from the Academy itself, Rock, who held his first comedy show last night in Boston, said he’s still processing the moment.

According to a Rolling Stone report, Rock didn’t say much about the slap in his first show since the incident, but did indicate he will have to write some new material to add to his Ego Death comedy tour.

“I don’t have a bunch of shit about what happened, so if you came to hear that, I have a comedy show I wrote before all this shit,” the comedian told a sold-out crowd in Boston, before confessing the worst part of his weekend was finding out his daughter didn’t get into USC.

That didn’t stop a large host of photographers and reporters who almost outnumbered the audience to show up at the event. According to Rolling Stone, Rock’s 75-minute set included him saying that America is done and the COVID-19 pandemic wasn’t deadly enough to unite Americans.

Rock also discussed his two daughters and how he can not connect with them because they had the privileged upbringing he envied growing up, as well as what the dating scene is like as a rich man in his 50s.

Woman Abducted at Birth Begs Court To Release Kidnapper, ‘I Need My Mother Home’

Woman Abducted at Birth Begs Court To Release Kidnapper, ‘I Need My Mother Home’

Kamiyah Mobley was nearing adulthood when she learned that the woman who she believed was her mother was actually a kidnapper who abducted her from a maternity ward years before.

But after being raised by Gloria Williams, Mobley still views the convicted felon as her mother and is begging for her release from prison. A judge recently denied Williams’ motion to have her sentence reduced from 18 years to 9 years, First Coast News reports.

The ruling comes after Mobley filed a plea asking the judge to show mercy to Williams despite abducting her years before. It was June 2018 when Williams was sentenced to 18 years in prison for disguising herself as a nurse and kidnapping Mobley from a maternity ward in 1998.

Williams was at the University Medical Center (now UF Health Jacksonville) in July 1998 when she pretended to befriend Kamiyah Mobley’s mother, Shanara Mobley, who was just 15 years old at the time. Once inside the maternity ward, Williams stole her baby eight hours after she was born.

The case went cold after a months-long manhunt for the child. But Williams’ luck ran out in 2017 when authorities arrested her at her home in Walterboro, South Carolina, when Mobley was 18 years old.

In December, Williams and Mobley both sent letters to the judge asking to have her sentence reduced, News 4 Jax reports.

“I ask for the court’s grace and mercy, as I need my mother here,” Mobley wrote.

Both Williams and Mobley said there was no justification for the kidnapping while asking for leniency. In her motion, Williams claims the three years she has spent in prison helped to rehabilitate her and understand her wrongs.

“I have a new perspective on life as a result of my experiences while incarcerated. Rehabilitation within the Department of Corrections comes only to those who sincerely desire to strive for self-betterment and change,” Williams wrote.

North Carolina Prisoner Serving Time for Killing Toddler Killed by Inmates

North Carolina Prisoner Serving Time for Killing Toddler Killed by Inmates

A man who was convicted of murdering a toddler has been killed in a North Carolina prison by a group of inmates, according to prison officials.

The North Carolina Department of Public Safety (NCDPS) released a statement pertaining to the incident that took place on Tuesday afternoon. Authorities have stated that Semajs Short, who was 24, was attacked by a group of prisoners housed at Bertie Correctional Institution in Windsor. The group of men ended up killing him in an attack that took place at 2:14 p.m. Tuesday.

First responders performed life-saving efforts until the local paramedics arrived. They tried to resuscitate the prisoner but Short was pronounced dead by paramedics at approximately 2:37 p.m.

There were also three other prisoners who were reported as injured during the group assault. They were all taken to an outside medical establishment to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

The Windsor Police Department and the State Bureau of Investigation are investigating the incident that took place at Bertie Correctional Institution. The Department of Public Safety is fully cooperating in the investigation and intends to seek criminal prosecution against any prisoners who were involved in the altercation. The institution has been placed on modified lockdown as officials work to uncover more about what happened and why. Nobody on staff was injured.

Almost five years ago on April 3, 2017, Short was convicted of second-degree murder in Halifax County. The prisoner was serving a 31-year sentence and was expected to be released on May 7, 2042.

According to WAVY, the dead prisoner pled guilty to the 2014 murder of a 2-year-old toddler by the name of Dy’Unanna Anderson in Halifax County.

Short was 17 years old when the murder took place. According to reports, the little girl’s murder was in retaliation for the murder of 15-year-old Keyuon Garner, who died earlier in the same evening.

It was alleged that Short and another person stood on an air conditioning unit outside a room where Anderson and her grandmother, Catherine Price, were sleeping. Anderson was killed and Price was shot several times.

Mother and Baby Boy Die From Carbon Monoxide Poisoning While Sitting Inside Car

Mother and Baby Boy Die From Carbon Monoxide Poisoning While Sitting Inside Car

A father and husband are mourning the loss of his wife and infant son after they died from carbon monoxide poisoning while sitting inside a car.

Kellye Weathersby-Canty and her 10-month-old son were found dead inside the parking garage at the Detroit Medical Center, Fox 2 Detroit reports. Police believe the mother and son were waiting for a family member undergoing a medical procedure.

DeMarray Canty, the father and husband, is shattered by the tragedy. He and Kellye had just celebrated their union in a small wedding ceremony in April 2021 and welcomed their baby boy Kanan a few months later.

Tragedy struck his happy home on March 23 after Kellye took her mother to a doctor’s appointment at Harper Hospital. She parked the car in the medical center’s parking garage and waited inside the car with her son. But the wife and baby never made it home.

“I ended up calling her, she didn’t answer, so I called her sister back to see if she had talked to her,” he said. “I asked did she have her location?”

Canty ended up tracking the car down and when he arrived, he found his wife and son locked inside unresponsive. Eventually, with the help of others, the frantic father and husband was able to break inside the vehicle.

“I got him out of the car seat and I held him and put him to my face,” he said. “I always put his face to my face — but his face was cold,” he said. “And I’m trying to wake him up.”

Medical personnel did everything they could, but Kellye and Kanan were gone.

Canty has since launched a GoFundMe page where he recalls how his life has “forever changed” while asking for assistance with covering the funeral arrangements.

“Our family was just getting started. Never in a MILLION years would I think I would be planning a funeral,” he wrote. “I need help sending my family off right.”

By Thursday, Canty had surpassed $29,000 towards his initial goal of $8,000.

Braxton Sisters Feel Traci’s Husband and Management Are ‘Exploiting’ Her Death

After the Braxtons experienced tragedy with the death of sister Traci Braxton, they reportedly are not happy with her husband and manager, and feel the pair is “exploiting” her death, according to close sources to the family.

Earlier this month, it was revealed that Traci, who was part of the reality TV show, Braxton Family Values with her sisters Toni, Tamar, Towanda and Trina, passed away after a year-long battle with esophageal cancer. She was living with cancer for a year and never made her illness public.

According to the New York Post, the Braxton sisters want to let their late sister Traci rest in peace, but sources are saying that her husband, Kevin Surratt, and the management team are “exploiting” their sister in death.

“Traci did not want a funeral or wake. She did not want people looking all over her body. She specifically requested to be immediately cremated… There was a Zoom meeting that made it clear about what she wanted, and now her husband is trying to cash in on her name,” a Braxton insider told Page Six.

Surratt presented a viewing for Traci last week and her sisters, Tamar, Trina, Towanda, Toni and their mother Evelyn Braxton reportedly did not attend. Their father Michael Conrad Braxton did appear but was initially turned away at the door “for not being on the list.” He was eventually allowed in when recognized by a church member and he sat in the fourth row, not allowed to speak, according to reports.

Surratt, who was married to Traci for nearly 30 years, denied that story and said, “My father-in-law and brother-in-law came in briefly.”

He also said he was planning her funeral for months although she was unaware of it.

“I was with my wife… more than anybody in this world. I know my wife, and when she got cancer, we really started to communicate about funeral plans and I was still trying to find treatments for her. I went to every single one of her doctor appointments throughout our entire marriage. That’s how we were, and now they’re treating me like a [deadbeat] husband,” he said.

He also states that his wife “wanted a viewing and one memorial service in conjunction with her management, PR and other members to come together and celebrate her.”

The Braxton family will be holding their own private memorial “the way Traci requested” on April 2, which lands on what would have been Traci’s 51st birthday.

Report: Academy Lied About Asking Will Smith To Leave Oscars After Assaulting Chris Rock

Report: Academy Lied About Asking Will Smith To Leave Oscars After Assaulting Chris Rock

According to sources with direct knowledge, actor Will Smith was not asked to leave the Oscars award show and in fact, was told by the producer of the show he could stay.

The Academy said Wednesday they asked Smith to leave the event after the incident but he refused. However, TMZ reports that after Smith slapped comedian Chris Rock, three sources who said they witnessed conversations between the Academy and Smith’s representatives got heated and during a commercial break about half an hour after the incident, producer Will Packer walked up to Smith and told him, “We do not want you to leave.”

Less than 10 minutes later, Smith was announced as the winner of the Best Actor Award and went back on stage where he apologized to everyone but Rock.

The Academy announced Wednesday it has “initiated disciplinary proceedings” against Smith for his conduct.

The “Board of Governors today initiated disciplinary proceedings against Mr. Smith for violations of the Academy’s Standards of Conduct, including inappropriate physical contact, abusive or threatening behavior, and compromising the integrity of the Academy,” the organization behind the Oscars said in a statement.

The Academy also apologized to Rock, who has benefitted from the situation as tickets for his comedy tour have skyrocketed. Additionally, several celebrities and comedians including Oscar hosts Wanda Sykes and Amy Schumer have come to his defense.

“Mr. Smith’s actions at the 94th Oscars were a deeply shocking, traumatic event to witness in-person and on television. Mr. Rock, we apologize to you for what you experienced on our stage and thank you for your resilience in that moment,” the Academy added. “We also apologize to our nominees, guests and viewers for what transpired during what should have been a celebratory event.”

A second board meeting by the Academy is scheduled for April 18 and could announce a suspension or expulsion of Smith.
