Barack Obama Couldn’t Be ‘Prouder’ of Malia And Sasha Marching in Black Lives Matter Protests

Sasha and Malia Obama joined the thousands of Americans who took to the streets in 2020 to protest against police brutality following the police killing of George Floyd.

Now the former President is opening up about how proud he is of his daughters for joining the masses and peacefully making their voices heard. Barack Obama told People Magazine how Sasha and Malia felt “the need to participate” in the nationwide protests following the unjust killings of Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, and many others.

After spending eight years in the White House, the sisters have maintained low-profile lives after their father left office in 2017. It took an interview Obama did last November for him to reveal his daughter’s participation in the Black Lives Matter protests, People reports.

Now the 44th president shared how the two college students take his advice while making their own decisions on advocating for social justice.

“I didn’t have to give them a lot of advice because they had a very clear sense of what was right and what was wrong and [of] their own agency and the power of their voice and the need to participate,” Obama said. “Malia and Sasha found their own ways to get involved with the demonstrations and activism that you saw with young people this summer, without any prompting from Michelle and myself, on their own initiative.”

He went on to applaud his girls for joining the protests in a genuine effort and not “looking for limelight,” he said. “They were very much in organizer mode. I could not have been prouder of them.”

While many would assume the two sisters took after their politician father in being a beacon for change, Obama would rather give his daughters credit for taking the initiative all on their own.

“I think a couple of times they asked for sort of very specific suggestions about what would be the best way to communicate X or what would be the most useful thing that, if we were mobilizing a whole bunch of friends, to have an impact, what should we be doing?” he said. “But they didn’t need to be encouraged. Their attitude was — we’ve seen something wrong and we want to fix it, and we think we can fix it. And we understand that it’s not gonna take just a day or a week or one march to fix it. But we’re in it for the long haul.”

He isn’t sure if either of his daughters will pursue a career in politics in the future. But he’s certain his daughters will be “active citizens” and continue advocating for positive change the masses can benefit from.

“They’re reflective of their generation in the sense they want to make a difference, and they think about their careers in terms of– How do I have a positive impact? How do I make the world better?” he said. “I think they’re going to want to have an impact, and their friends feel the same way.”

LeBron James Is The Most Hated Player In The NBA

Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James didn’t end the season in the way that he hoped or anticipated after losing the first round of the playoffs after taking the title last season. You’d think he could rest while absorbing the bruises of a season that didn’t end with a championship. Well, he may have to wait for a little longer to get that much-needed rest!

According to data acquired from Sportsinsider.com, as seen on The Score, King James holds the distinction of being the ‘Most Hated Player’ in the NBA. A map was posted on Twitter that used geotagged data from the social media platform from the last month, showing that James is the most hated NBA player in a whopping 24 states and gained the title of the most “hated” player overall. James, being hated in 18 states, was his former teammate and Brooklyn Nets guard, Kyrie Irving.

The map is based on more than 70,000 tweets, including hashtags and direct keyword phrases that mentioned the hate and dislike for the NBA players in each listed state.

Amazingly, after James, the next three most hated athletes are Brooklyn Nets players, Irving, James Harden, and Kevin Durant. Washington Wizards’ Russell Westbrook and Los Angeles Clippers’ Paul George round out the list.

This past year hasn’t been an ideal one for King James. In early May, the basketball player made headlines after he tweeted out a photo of the officer who fatally shot Ma’Khia Bryant and said YOU’RE NEXT #Accountability,” WKYC reports. The tweet came after James tweeted the word “ACCOUNTABILITY” in response to Derek Chauvin being found guilty of killing George Floyd. After leaving the tweets up for a few hours, James deleted the tweet and claimed it was being used to spread more hate.

James later returned to Twitter and admitted to sending out a poorly worded tweet after Bryant’s death. “I fueled the wrong conversation about Ma’Khia Bryant, and I owe it to her and this movement to change it,” the four-time NBA MVP wrote.

In late April, one of the most popular and best players to play in the NBA didn’t list James on his first all-time team. to make matters worse, he didn’t even place James on his second all-time team of players.

Philadelphia 76ers legend Julius Erving, who played in the air before Michael Jordan figured out he can fly, had his reasons for not picking James.

“When you look at LeBron and anybody he sort of picks with him … he played with so many guys. He’s the guy who has led the charge in terms of superteams being put together.”

“When he put together the team in Miami, he put together that team in Cleveland as well and put together a team in Los Angeles,” Erving continued. “So he can pick his own team, I’m not going to pick his team. I’m not saying nothing bad about LeBron.”

Black Twitter Questions Destiny’s Child “Cater 2 U” Lyrics 17 Years After Its Release

A song can hit differently as you grow older and times change. That’s exactly the case for Destiny’s Child 2004 track, “Cater 2 U”.

Black Twitter started to debate the song’s dated lyrics after one user shared how she started to look at the track sideways. “Me listening to “cater 2 u” @TheBaddestMitch tweeted along with a meme of Erika Dixon looking skeptical.

Destiny’s Child’s fans can remember the group’s iconic performance of the song at the 2005 BET Awards, where Beyonce, Kelly, and Michelle did a little dance routine for Terrence Howard, Nelly, and Magic Johnson. But with the trio’s fanbase growing up within today’s woke era, some people think the song suggests a woman should be too submissive to her man.

“Beyoncé lost me in the first verse when she said, ‘my life would be purposeless without you,'” the user added. “Then she followed later with, ‘I’ll brush your hair. Put your durag onnnn.’ Do you know how particular black men are about their durag tying technique? It’s too much.”

Others agreed the song served out tremendous “pick me” vibes. “Such a pick me song,” added someone else.

https://twitter.com/reallifenurse7/status/1401043931035492355?s=20

When looking back at the song’s message, it’s all about pleasing your man to the best of your ability. No matter the time of day or circumstances, it seemingly suggests a woman’s job to cater to her man.

Some of the lyrics include:

“When you come home late, tap me on my shoulder, I’ll roll over
Baby, I heard you
I’m here to serve you
If it’s love you need, to give it is my joy
All I wanna do is cater to you, boy.”

Another Twitter user addressed this while tweeting a gif saying, “Wait a minute, hold up!”

“Michelle literally said she’ll give her man her will to live,” one user said with two crying emojis.

Another user quoted the song while including a memorable scene from the movie Get Out that showed a Black woman smiling while shaking her head no. “I’ll put my life in your hands,” they said with another crying emoji.

Beyonce recently teased new music is on the way while on a group call with Kelly and Michelle, MSN reported. Maybe the ladies will cook up a new love ballad with more modernized female empowered lyrics.

Representative Val Demings To Challenge Marco Rubio For His Senate Seat

Florida Representative and Black woman Val Demings will challenge Florida Republican Marco Rubio for his Senate seat.

In a three-minute video announcing her candidacy, Demings discussed her upbringing as the child of a janitor and a maid and how that helped guide her to joining the Orlando police department, where she worked her way from an officer to the first female police chief in the department’s history.

“When you grow up in the South poor, Black and female, you have to have faith in progress and opportunity. My father was a janitor and my mother was a maid. She said, ‘Never tire of doing good, never tire,’” Demings says in the ad. “I’ve never tired of standing up for what I believe is right, now I’m running for the United States Senate because of two simple words: never tire.”

Demings has served in the House of Representatives since 2017. She also served as the chief of police for Orlando’s police department from 2007 to 2011. Her husband, Jerry Demings, is the current mayor of Orange County.

Demings also gained national notoriety last year when she served as an impeachment manager for the first Senate trial of former President Donald Trump after he tried to pressure Ukraine to investigate current President Joe Biden’s son, Hunter.

NBC News reported in May that Demings had been considering a Senate for a while. Those around her were pushing her to run and believe she’d make a tough opponent for Rubio. which appears to be correct given his reaction to the news.

In a video he posted to Twitter, Rubio called Demings a “do nothing House member without a single significant legislative achievement,” before adding that she wanted to close schools and businesses during the coronavirus pandemic.

He also posted a retweet of a video of Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) posting that Demings has voted with Omar 90% of the time.

The two shared a moment after Chiles saw the team’s coach Cecile Landi crying, which made her tear up. Biles came over and joined her coach and teammate in a move of solidarity.

“(Biles) was telling me I deserved what I just did and I’m gifted and talented and I have the opportunity to make that team,” Chiles told USA Today.

Following the championship, Biles beat out Sunisa Lee and made history with her seventh women’s all-around gymnastics title, ABC News reported.

Now Biles has her sights set on the Tokyo Olympics, which starts Friday, July 23. “I feel like every single championship stands out for a different reason, but this one stands out specifically because it’s the road to Tokyo,” she said.

Cheers to adding to her 30 Olympic and World Championship medals.

Study: Student Loan Forgiveness Will Benefit Low-Income Borrowers More Than The Rich

According to a new research study, cancelling $50,000 in student loan debt for all borrowers would help lower-income debtors far more than rich ones.

The study, conducted by the Roosevelt Institute, came to the conclusion while those against student loan forgiveness say cancelling student debt will mostly benefit the wealthy and high income borrowers.

“Through examination of five common mistakes that have led some to conclude that student debt cancellation is regressive, the authors show that student debt cancellation would provide more benefits to those with fewer economic resources and could play a critical role in addressing the racial wealth gap and building the Black middle class,” the introduction to the study states.

According to researchers, lower income borrowers, particularly Black borrowers, tend to take on more debt to fund their education. They’re also more likely to attend a predatory for-profit school, less likely to graduate and more likely to default on their student debt.

The study noted that higher-income households generally carry more student loan debt, however, the burden of carrying the debt is more significant. For starters higher income households can pay the debt. Student loan debt acts as more of a barrier to economic freedom for low-income borrowers. Low-income students who can’t pay off the debt have more trouble accessing credit in the future.

The Biden administration has suspended student debt payments for borrowers through October 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic. Some colleges and universities have also cancelled student debt using funds from Biden’s stimulus packages, including Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

The Wall Street Journal reported Monday that the Biden administration estimated $53 billion in losses for the federal government’s student loan portfolio. The amount is a significant jump from the $15 billion estimate from 2020 and includes the suspended debt payments.

It’s unclear what the Biden administration will do once the October deadline passes. Progressive Democrats are still pushing Biden to cancel $50,000 in student loan debt for borrowers nationwide. Biden has proposed cancelling $10,000 in student debt and has asked his lawyers to study the legality of using an executive action to carry out his debt-forgiveness plan.

Pursuing occupations where African Americans may be underrepresented could be a major key to increasing financial security. Georgetown University’s Center on Education and the Workforce found that although African Americans are attending college at higher rates, degreed African Americans are still in college majors and occupations, such as STEM, health, and business. The report identified these areas as some of the highest-paying jobs with growth.

The deadline to apply for the J.P. Morgan Chase Wealth Management HBCU Scholarship is June 24.

Jemele Hill Slams Sen. Joe Manchin For Opposing Voting Rights Bill

There is never a time that we know of that Jemele Hill, now a contributing writer for The Atlantic and host of Spotify’s podcast, “Jemele Hill is Unbothered,” has held back for the sake of being politically correct.

So, it should come as no surprise that she called Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin, a “power-hungry White dude” after he announced that he would be opposing a voting rights bill pushed by his own party.

After reports of Manchin’s decision hit the airwaves, Hill went to Twitter to voice her disappointment, labeling him “a clown.”

Manchin defended his position Sunday saying that he is not willing to change Senate rules to help Democrats push through much of President Joe Biden’s agenda.

“I believe that partisan voting legislation will destroy the already weakening binds of our democracy, and for that reason, I will vote against the For the People Act. Furthermore, I will not vote to weaken or eliminate the filibuster,” Manchin, a moderate Democrat from West Virginia, wrote in an op-ed published in the Charleston Gazette-Mail.

Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-NY) compared Manchin to Mitch McConnell and added Manchin is trying to thwart the Democratic agenda.

“Joe Manchin has become the new Mitch McConnell. Mitch McConnell during Obama’s presidency said he would do everything in his power to stop [Obama],” Bowman told CNN’s John Berman. “He’s also repeated that now during the Biden presidency by saying he would do everything in his power to stop President Biden, and now Joe Manchin is doing everything in his power to stop democracy and to stop our work for the people, the work that the people sent us here to do.

Hill did receive many responses from Twitter users regarding her opinion of the Democratic politician.
