I've been exploring social media's latest runaway site – Pinterest*, a virtual bulletin board that allows users to share images, objects, and links they find interesting or inspiring. While, personally, I enjoy pinning photos of stylish outfits, chic MacBook and iPad cases, and outtakes from home décor magazines, I see the value this platform has for brands. When it comes to my brand, I’ve taken a thought leadership approach— just check my "Essential Books" board to see what branding, social media and marketing books I’m reading. This user-friendly platform is already proving to be valuable for businesses.
There’s serious potential to drive sales for business owners. Getting images of your products pinned and repinned can literally drive customers to your door step. At the very least, it will drive traffic to your website where customers can request your service.

On the Real Housewives of Atlanta, we've all seen the drama and antics of six women interacting both professionally and personally to make must-see TV. But Attorney Phaedra Parks is not your typical reality TV diva. She's been managing law partner at The Parks Group, P.C., for a decade, and has represented the likes of Bobby Brown, Jermaine Dupri and Ludacris, among others.

The mother, entrepreneur, and litigator, was president of the Gate City Bar Association, and actively sits on boards for organizations including the American Bar Association and the University of Georgia. One can't have all of this under her (designer) belt without knowing a thing -- or three--- about networking.

Harnessing the power of social for social good was a major trend and point of discussion among conscious techies and seasoned panelists during Social Media Week 2012. We’ve seen how quickly platforms can be used to mobilize reform efforts thanks to social media’s influence in the Arab Spring and recent Occupy Movement. Digital thought leaders have no doubt that, when used properly, social media can be a significant cultural unifier, connecting people and efforts despite location.
Moderated by Alice Korngold of Korngold Consulting LLC, "Social Media for Social Good"—an hour-long panel discussing best practices to use when furthering a cause in the digital space—wasn’t short of generating great ideas. The panelists included Cheryl Heller, board chair at PopTech; Dan Savage, creator of the It Gets Better Project; President and COO of Digitaria Doug Hecht and Carmel Hagan of Common. Mardi Gras is more than just a party for local businesses in the city of New Orleans. Last year, the economic value of the carnival season contributed a total of $300.7 million to the city’s economy. Tourism, which brings in more than eight million visitors per year, creates a lot of revenue for local businesses. In fact, it has sustained 74,000 jobs and generated $5 billion annually for the local economy. Mardi Gras is one of the few events that has revived New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, which displaced thousands of Louisiana natives. The two weeks leading up to Fat Tuesday are the most lucrative for New Orleans business owners. Most hotels are booked, from the French Quarter to miles away near the Armstrong International Airport. King cakes, a New Orleans staple, are only sold around the carnival season and tourists and locals alike roam the city to find the best. While everyone’s letting the good times roll, BlackEnterprise.com Decodes how local businesses watch the money roll in. —Kamaria Gboro

On the cusp of the Grammy Awards, Whitney Houston was found dead in her Beverly Hills, California hotel room this past Saturday afternoon at the young age of 48. As the news spread throughout the corners of the globe, fans and peers alike gasped in disbelief as “one of the best vocalist to ever grace the earth” had left us. Houston’s voice was magical. She belted out flawless notes effortlessly. Throughout the history of music there has been no one quite like Houston, and there will never be another. A voice as sweet as honey, yet soulful to the core, only comes around once in a lifetime. More than a singer, Houston’s career evolved to include acting, modeling and business, which she excelled in all. Despite a rough patch in her life, the iconic singer was back on the track to success with her upcoming role in the remake of Sparkle. In remembrance of the music icon, BlackEnterprise.com Decodes Whitney Houston’s lasting impact. —Bené Viera

The Beginning: Known to many as the “real life Hitch,” Brunson says he's the only black male matchmaker in the U.S., among full-time professionals in the industry. In 2008, he was seeking business advice from a friend and decided to meet up with her at a matchmaking conference. At the time, his day job was working as a financial adviser. He never ended up meeting with his friend, but he did stumble upon an interesting discussion.

“There were about 250 matchmakers from all over the world---all blond women over the age of 40," he says. "It hit me: ‘Black people love too.’ ” Taking notice of the lack of diversity, Brunson decided to tap into a niche of his own.

Success is not luck. It’s what happens when preparation meets opportunity. And those who begin this preparation process out of the starting blocks tend to acquire key leadership assignments and professional reputations that, in some cases, exceed those of colleagues more than a decade their senior. The female entrepreneurs and corporate executives identified in our latest “editors’ choice” roster—40 Rising Stars 40 and Under—have made moves that have placed them on the path to power and success in business, all before their 41st birthdays.

In consulting the nation’s largest public and private corporations, major trade associations, established entrepreneurs, and senior executives over the past several months, our editorial research team discovered this cadre of remarkable women. They operate within a range of industries and disciplines, including science and technology; advertising, marketing, and public relations; finance; energy; food and beverages; and entertainment. Some run large or significant divisions of their companies and report to a chief executive or division head, others have launched and managed successful independent entities. These women are innovators and influencers, trailblazers and pioneers who reshaped and refreshed disciplines with cutting-edge processes, or transformed ideas into tangible, lucrative products or services.

We chose not to include managers or employees of law firms, unions, nonprofit organizations, or government agencies, or those employed in fashion or the arts, medicine, and education.

Having attained this much power and success early in their respective careers, there’s no telling what groundbreaking achievements the women who made this year’s list will accomplish in coming years. Judging from the drive that put them in their current positions, it appears as if nothing will stop them from reaching the pinnacle of global industry.

I talk to stressed out business owners and non-profit leaders almost every day who are just plain overwhelmed with social media. Not because they don't know how to use it and not because they don't understand its value. They're stressed because the space changes at such a rapid pace---the ground is always shifting under their feet so they never really feel like they're gotten a foothold.

So what do you do to keep up with social media while running your business? It's impossible to get on every platform and more importantly, it's just not smart. You can't do that, so don't even try. Instead of focusing on quantity of social connections and sites, focus more on quality control. Here are 6 ways to do it.---Amanda Miller Littlejohn

For last night's Super Bowl XLVI, millions gathered to watch with excitement --- and for some, disappointment --- as the New York Giants took home the victory. Each team combined skill, strategy, and deliberate action to capture the NFL's top win, a career-defining moment for both sides to reflect on what was done well and what could be improved for next season.

All of these elements exist in today's competitive business world, with everyday professionals applying brain and brawn to achieve career wins. Female professionals can take major cues from the men on the field --- and in the C-suite.

Jocelyn Giangrande, career coach and author of What’s In Your Sandwich? 10 Surefire Ingredients for Career Success (SASHE, L.L.C; $18.95), offers four lessons women can learn from the Super Bowl to step out of the cheerleader sidelines and into championship gains.

In 1992, the average cost per 30 seconds for a Super Bowl ad was $850,000, and now that number has more than quadrupled. With an average increase of $100,000 per year, the NFL has stated that 2012’s average cost per 30 seconds of airtime for America’s largest annual sporting event is $3.5 million.

As Chrysler took the title of the most expensive Super Bowl commercial to air in the history of the event last year with its two-minute spot, audiences everywhere are left to wonder if any brand will ever supersede the car company’s “Imported From Detroit” ad. While some brands have been said to spend $4 million for a half-minute spot this year, only time will tell.

As the New York Giants win of Super Bowl XLVI concluded just hours ago, and fans going crazy over a new crop of memorable spots from Doritos, Chevy, and Pepsi commercials, BlackEnterprise.com takes a look at the most expensive ads to air over the past decade during February’s main event. —Amber McKynzie

Unfulfilled by his advertising job, Andre Woolery found refuge in his creative energies as a visual artist. Rather than just relying on paint, the New Jersey resident created one-of-a-kind murals of public figures like Barack Obama, Shawn "Jay-Z" Carter, and Kanye West among others completely of colored thumbtacks. As a preview to Woolery's first solo exhibition this February 23rd at Frontrunner Gallery in New York, here is a photo gallery of some of his most notable pieces.
