On his first meeting with former South African President Nelson Mandela "The new South Africa needs us. To be specific, if a truly, multiracial state will grow out of apartheid’s ashes, it needs contributions of African American skills and financial resources. That was the message President Mandela delivered to a gathering of prominent black American business and political leaders when he visited BLACK ENTERPRISE’s offices a year after he gained his freedom. Black America has created, sustained and grown its own businesses and sent executives to the nation’s largest corporations. South Africa needs this knowledge."

Drake

Aubrey Drake Graham was born in Canada to a white Jewish mom and an African-American Catholic Father. He got into acting when a high school friend asked him to audition for his dad. From there he landed a role on the hit teen soap opera “Degrassi” for seven seasons, earning a Young Artist Award for Best Ensemble in a TV Series in 2002.

With a desire to go back to his musical roots (his father was a drummer), Drake started to circulate mixtapes in 2006 and had a video on 106 & Park in 2007. In 2008, Degrassi changed the cast and Drake was let go along with his cast mates. Drake almost took a day job, until he got a call from Lil’ Wayne asking him to join his tour. He signed with Young Money Entertainment a year later and has been making record topping music ever since.

We reveal whether African Americans have made significant progress 50 years after the March on Washington

As thousands travel to the nation’s capital to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom , we continue to grapple with the question of whether African Americans collectively has made significant progress worthy of Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s epic “I Have A Dream” Speech. It’s true African Americans no longer suffer the injustices of Jim Crow and that we have made significant political achievement – most notably, the election of America’s first African American president, Barack Obama, for two terms – but we still confront the nagging problems of poverty, unemployment and racism.

And the fact that such challenges continue to persist has never been more evident than the failure of a jury to hold George Zimmerman accountable for slaying Trayvon Martin as well as the Supreme Court’s decision in June to dismantle the 1965 Voting Rights Act. Revealing data compiled by the U.S. Census Bureau as well as information from the Pew Research center’s recent report on the economic, political and social status of African Americans, Black Enterprise – using the design talents of our Creative Director Terence Saulsby – provides a graphic snapshot of where we stand as a people today compared to that historic day in 1963. Have we realized the dream? You decide.
