5 Tips For Managing Workplace Conflict

5 Tips For Managing Workplace Conflict

How does one manage conflict in the workplace in the midst of a global pandemic, presidential transition, and overall uncertainty?

Originally Published Feb. 17, 2021

What does conflict resolution look like in a virtual or hybrid workplace if it is no longer possible to meet a colleague by the watercooler or stop by a supervisor’s office to casually run something by them? Regardless of what is going on in the world, conflict will always be constant.

My company, Breakthrough ADR, advises organizations that aspire to have a frictionless workplace. We teach our clients how to listen, negotiate and resolve conflict in a variety of settings.

In the course of that work, we have observed that regardless of the workplace environment, people often act in predictable ways. Our observations have led us to develop five SMART strategies to help your company resolve business conflict in the new year.

Separate the person from the problem

Although your work environment may look different these days, most workplace conflicts consistently have two foundational elements: (1) the people involved in the conflict and (2) the problem those people seek to address. In order to most effectively resolve a conflict, you have to separate (1) from (2). Sometimes the problem itself is simple to resolve, but because of the people involved (including their philosophies, experiences, and personalities) the resolution is not apparent or seemingly out of reach. As you enter the new year, pledge to stop conflating people and problems, and address each separately.

Make a point to understand the underlying interests

The distinction between what a person is saying they want versus why they want something is important to recognize and sometimes reveals that the underlying goals of the parties are more aligned than divergent. Once interests are known, positions often soften, and common ground can be reached.

Accept reality with a “Yes, and…”.

As an improv student at the Upright Citizen’s Brigade, I learned the “Yes, and” technique. Essentially, this approach fosters a sense of cooperation because each improviser is encouraged to listen and be receptive to the ideas of others regardless of whether you agree or disagree with the premise. How this translates to conflict resolution is easy. Saying “Yes, but …” halts a conversation because once you say “but” you negate everything that preceded that word. “Yes, and …” builds communication bridges that you can use to reach an understanding. By substituting one word, choosing “and” instead of “but,” you can open the door to engage in collaborative problem-solving.

Resolve with everyone at the table.

Once the door to resolving the conflict is open, make sure you invite everyone involved in the conflict to the table. It is a waste of time to try to solve a conflict when a key person to the situation is not a part of the conversation. You cannot agree to acts, omissions, or changes in behavior on behalf of someone else—the person in question has to be involved.  While I do not advise forcing someone who steadfastly refuses to be involved to the table, creative leaders can set the tone for the organization and properly incentivize all stakeholders to come to the table.

Trust the process.

Effective and durable change requires time, patience, and flexibility. There will likely be challenges when you implement a well-thought-out conflict management plan, particularly if the change of course is significant. Naturally, some participants in the plan may doubt it— e.g., “the plan will work too slowly” or “the plan is never going to work”—but as a leader you need to trust the process and encourage your team to do so. If you have engaged in a quality process where you have followed the prior four strategies, then the plan that you have designed has a high probability for success. Plus, remember that plans are guidelines that can be revisited and adapted as your organization grows and changes.

While conflict is inevitable, business conflict is manageable, preventable, and resolvable utilizing these SMART tips.

‘Basketball Wives’ Alum Gloria Govan Accused Of Fraud In Lawsuit Over Cannabis Company

Former "Basketball Wives" star Gloria Govan and her cannabis company, RLNTLSS Brands, are facing a lawsuit over unpaid bills.

Former Basketball Wives star Gloria Govan and her cannabis company RLNTLSS Brands are facing a legal full-court press.

In newly unveiled court documents, Silver Leaf Events has filed a lawsuit against Govan and her company for unpaid production costs, Radar Online reports. Silver Leaf’s owner Amanda Tingler claims Govan failed to uphold her end of a $15,000 contract.

According to the documents, Tingler met Govan in January 2023 and agreed to work together to produce episodes of a video project for Govan’s cannabis business. Silver Leaf put together a proposal with estimates for the videography and postproduction editing services totaling $15,000.

After both parties agreed to move forward, Govan said she asked for an official contract which Silver Leaf sent over in April 2023.

“[Silver Leaf] worked on the project through the end of April while regularly collaborating with GLORIA GOVAN and getting things ready with the brands and production team for filming,” the suit reads. “[Silver Leaf] filmed the content for the project, as directed by GLORIA GOVAN, on April 19, 2023. That morning, prior to filming, [Silver Leaf] sent GLORIA GOVAN a text message reminding her to sign the contract and to please send payment immediately.”

However, Silver Leaf claims Govan never brought the signed contract or check and proceeded to give them the run around for weeks. After confronting Govan about payment, the former reality star claimed to send a wire as well making promises for payment that never surfaced.

“GLORIA GOVAN messaged [Silver Leaf] back saying that she was going to send money on Zelle for $7500.00 of the amount that was owed for production of the first episode,” the suit reads. “Again, Defendants sent no payment for this amount to [Silver Leaf]. GLORIA GOVAN then stated that she could only send $1,000.00, but she would send more in ‘installments’ as they moved forward with the project.”

However, Silver Leaf claims it has “not received any further payments from the Defendants.” As a result, the company stopped working on the project in May 2023.

“[Silver Leaf] reasonably believes that Defendants manipulated Ms. Tingler and forced them to take on costs related to their business with no intention of paying for the work performed or the production costs,” the suit reads.

Silver Leaf is suing Govan for breach of contract, fraud, intentional misrepresentation, and conspiracy to engage in unfair business practices and demanding $30,000 in damages.

This is the second lawsuit Govan was recently hit with for unpaid bills. She’s also on the hook for $200,000 in a lawsuit filed by her former lawyers who represented her in her divorce from retired NBA player and current podcaster Matt Barnes.

Shaquille O’Neal Gifts Chicago Rapper With A Verse, $1M Rolls-Royce

Shaquille O'Neal appears on Chicago rapper, GAWNE's latest single, "Chaos"

Former NBA player Shaquille O’Neal has been dropping more verses than Jay-Z lately. In the latest collaboration, Shaq Diesel dropped a verse for a Midwest rapper and gifted the recording artist with a $1 million vehicle.

According to Complex, rapper GAWNE was handed the keys to a million-dollar Rolls-Royce after the NBA Hall of Famer dropped a verse on the rapper’s latest single, “Chaos.” The connection took place after Shaq contacted GAWNE through his Instagram account.

GAWNE was seen accepting the keys to the Rolls Royce.

“Shaq man, it’s the craziest day of my life. Shaq just gave me a f**king Rolls. Goddamn, man. Goddamn, God bless you Shaq,” Shaq responded by telling the rapper, “Now I gotta take an Uber.”

The Rolls Royce given to the artist is shown in the “Chaos” video.

Now that Shaq, a full-time commentator on TNT, isn’t returning to his playing days on the basketball court, he seems primed to hit the radio airwaves, after appearing on several songs this year as he resumes his recording career as a rapper.

Shaq Diesel recently lent his vocals, along with Milwaukee Bucks point guard Damian Lillard, on the remix of Rick Ross and Meek Mill’s recent release, “Shaq & Kobe.”

In September, he was labeled the “greatest NBA rapper of all time” by one of the most respected hip-hop artists in the game, Snoop Dogg, after appearing in Coyote’s “3 Locos.” This was another collaboration hooked up via Instagram when Shaq reached out to Ladies Love Guapo and Ricky Blanco. Blanco dropped a freestyle verse, and it caught the attention of Shaq; the announcer followed him, and it started an online relationship that led to Shaq being featured on the “3 Locos” track.

After discussing a possible feature, Guapo said that Shaq was interested, but only if the track was “some hardcore stuff.”

“He was like, as long as it’s some hardcore stuff, I’m down. So we made a hardcore hip-hop ’90s-type song, and we’re like, ‘Bro, let’s send it to Shaq,’ and he got on it, did his thing, he spit like 32 bars. He went off!” Guapo said.

We will, no doubt, be seeing and hearing more from Shaq Diesel in the future.

T.I. Pulled Over On Atlanta Highway, Caught Speeding By Georgia State Trooper

T.I. Pulled Over On Atlanta Highway, Caught Speeding By Georgia State Trooper

The 'Rubber Band Man' rapper almost crashed into another car as he sped by police officer

Recently released footage showed Atlanta recording artist and reality TV celebrity Clifford “T.I.” Harris being pulled over on an Atlanta highway after speeding past a police officer.

The footage shows the police car following T.I.’s Range Rover. When the officer approached his car, he asked the rapper to step outside the car, and he informed T.I. why he stopped him after explaining that he sped by him and almost hit another car. He noticed that there were no tags and questioned T.I., to which T.I. responded that he had just purchased the vehicle that day. The police officer asked him why he was driving like that, and Tip said that his “girl” was getting on his nerves.

“I was arguing with my girl. She was getting on my nerves. I apologize. She was getting under my skin.”

He then asked if he had any drinks as the officer said his eyes were bloodshot, but he insisted that he didn’t drink.

“Sir, I understand that you have a very difficult job,” T.I. stated. “I understand that there’s a lot of stress that comes with that job. I don’t want to add to it.” As they continue to talk, T.I. says, “I’m telling you the honest-to-God truth. Me and my old lady were arguing. If you go ask her, she’ll tell you. We were arguing, and I was trying to get home as fast as I could to get out of the car.”

The police officer was calm and non-confrontational as T.I. got someone on the phone to try to confirm that the vehicle belonged to him and that paperwork was being processed. T.I. went on to tell the officer that he was just in a rush to get back home so that way they could get out of each other’s way and be in their own “space.”

“I just wanted to get home as fast as I could so we could get out of the car so I can go to my space and she can go to her space.”

HipHopDX reported that T.I. was given three citations and allowed to leave the scene.

Black-Owned Barbering Platform Launches Scholarship To Save Student Barbers

Leading barber app theCut has launched a scholarship aimed at nurturing the next generation of barbers and cosmetologists.

Leading barber app theCut has launched a scholarship aimed at nurturing the next generation of barbers and cosmetologists.

Last month, theCut hosted “Shear Elegance: A Night to Save Barbering,” which launched a $5,000 scholarship fund, “Save Financial Aid for Student Barbers.” The campaign aims to fund financial aid for student barbers which is at risk due to the Department of Education’s (DOE) proposed amendments to the gainful employment rule, which could critically affect funding for aspiring student barbers and beauticians.

With the Department of Education proposing to change the Gainful Employment Rule and designate barbering, cosmetology and other personal service jobs as a “low-value” program, this would limit access to financial aid for students seeking enrollment in barber school programs. Now with theCut’s scholarship fund, promising student barbers and beauticians can continue to have access to essential resources despite the potential regulatory changes.

“In an attempt to protect the career choices of aspiring barbers and stylists, we launched the campaign to raise awareness and hopefully become a resource to the DOE in this new environment,” theCut founder Obi Omile tells BLACK ENTERPRISE. “Unfortunately we were unsuccessful in the latter.”

With an unwavering commitment to supporting the barber and beauty community, theCut hopes to aid the next generation of barbers and cosmetologists while raising awareness on their importance to the community.

“Barbers and stylists are essential. This was proven during the pandemic, as they were almost considered essential workers,” Omile says.

“These professionals are tasked with ensuring that everyone can look good, feel good, and do good as often as they so choose. Making sure that we have a future filled with barbers and stylists is obviously important for the mere fact of grooming and appearance upkeep. However, it’s also important to manage supply and demand dynamics to keep prices steady and to best mitigate against unsafe practices throughout the industry.”

TheCut is at the forefront of the barbering community, working to unite individuals with skilled barbers nationwide. Founded in 2016, theCut has surpassed Google’s search volume in the barbering sector, totaling 1.4 million searches.

Those interested in supporting theCut’s scholarship campaign can donate here.

Takeoff’s Mother Could Be Listed As Defendant In His Sexual Assault Lawsuit

The woman who filed a lawsuit in 2020 accusing Takeoff of sexual assault could be going after his mother in the wake of his untimely death.

The woman who filed a lawsuit in 2020 accusing Takeoff of sexual assault could be going after his mother in the wake of his untimely death.

Last week, attorneys representing the woman behind the suit filed court papers demanding that Takeoff’s mom, Tatiana Davenport, replace her late son in the lawsuit, All Hip Hop reports. With Davenport acting as the administrator of her late son’s estate, the plaintiff is seeking to have her substitute Takeoff in the suit.

The original complaint was filed in Los Angeles Superior Court in August 2020 accusing Takeoff of sexually assaulting the woman during a party in an Encino home on June 23, 2020. The lawsuit claims Takeoff made several advances during the party, which she rejected.

The woman alleges Takeoff made her feel “uncomfortable” before he followed her into a bedroom where he assaulted her, The New York Post reports. Jane Doe was then treated at a nearby hospital, where staff noted evidence of sexual trauma and alerted police.

The late rapper denied the allegations at the time and despite police involvement, L.A. County District Attorney’s office declined to press charges due to insufficient evidence. On November 1, 2022, Takeoff was fatally shot outside a Houston bowling alley before the lawsuit was resolved.

He was scheduled to testify at a deposition on Jan. 17, 2023, with a jury trial set for June, the U.S. Sun reports. Now the plaintiff is choosing to go after Takeoff’s mother and move forward with the lawsuit.

In June Davenport filed a $1 million wrongful death lawsuit against the owners of 810 Billiards & Bowling Houston where Takeoff was fatally shot. Davenport accused venue owners of being negligent in failing to provide adequate security, including metal detectors, security guards, and surveillance cameras, along with not enforcing a no-weapons policy, Fox 26 reported.

Sports Illustrated CEO Fired After AI-Generated Stories Scandal

The chief executive officer of "Sports Illustrated" has been ousted after the site was caught publishing AI-generated stories with fake author names and profiles.

The chief executive officer of Sports Illustrated has been ousted after the site was caught publishing AI-generated stories.

On Monday, Dec. 11 The Arena Group, which operates Sports Illustrated and The Street, fired its chief executive Ross Levinsohn after Sports Illustrated was caught publishing stories with fake author names and profile photos generated by artificial intelligence, CNN reports.

Levinsohn, who served as CEO for three years, was replaced by interim chief executive Manoj Bhargava, the founder of the energy drink brand 5-Hour Energy and majority investor of The Arena Group.

His removal comes less than a week after The Arena Group fired three major executives: operations president and chief operating officer Andrew Kraft, media president Rob Barrett, and corporate counsel Julie Fenster.

“All of the media brands, including Sports Illustrated, will continue to operate with the management of those verticals, while the company just takes a broad view of operations and how to improve the business overall,” Vince Bodiford, a spokesperson for Bhargava said

When asked if the AI-generated articles had anything to do with the swift terminations, Bodiford said, “We have nothing further to add to the company’s prior statements regarding A.I.”

Futurism first revealed the AI purported author “Sora Tanaka,” which/who claimed to be a product reviewer on the site.

“Sora has always been a fitness guru, and loves to try different foods and drinks,” the profile stated. “Ms. Tanaka is thrilled to bring her fitness and nutritional expertise to the Product Reviews Team, and promises to bring you nothing but the best of the best.”

When called out, The Arena Group issued a statement claiming the articles with the AI-generated headshots had been provided by a contractor called AdVon Commerce.

“We understand that change can be challenging, but it is also a necessary catalyst for progress,” Grady Tripp, the company’s senior vice president of people wrote. “Our commitment to making Arena a successful and profitable company remains steadfast. We believe that these and other changes will contribute to the growth and success of Arena for the benefit of all stakeholders, including our valued customers, shareholders, and employees.”

Fantasia And Danielle Brooks Earn Golden Globe Nominations For ‘The Color Purple’ Despite Best Motion Picture Snub

"The Color Purple" isn't even in theaters yet, but it's already scored Fantasia and Danielle Brooks Golden Globe nominations.

The Color Purple isn’t even in theaters yet, but it’s already scored Fantasia and Danielle Brooks Golden Globe nominations.

The nominations for the 2024 Golden Globes were announced on Dec. 11, and two stars from the musical film could be walking away with an award. Fantasia, who stars as Celie in the musical remake, received her first Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress, Variety reports.

Danielle Brooks also received her first Golden Globe nomination, for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture.

Fantasia responded to her nomination on Monday and acknowledged her previous claim to never play the character of Celie again after portraying the lead character on Broadway.

“I’ve said in Interviews before that I would never play this role again because of post-traumatic stress, but I am so glad that I didn’t allow fear to stand in my way,” Fantasia said via Deadline.

It was her husband who told her the good news.

“The first thing I do in the morning is call my husband — I remember picking up the phone, and he was screaming,” she shared. “That’s when he told me I had been nominated for a Golden Globe, and I started crying. This has been a long time coming for me.”

After citing the Book of Job, Fantasia noted the patience she’s needed throughout her entertainment career and knowing that “things will come through in the end.”

As for what’s next for the 2004 American Idol winner, Fantasia hopes to do more acting and release new music while enjoying her family.

“I would love to do more movies and challenge myself in other roles because I love working,” she said. “But most importantly, I want to help heal as Celie did in this story. I am so proud of her. I want to share my home and bless people with resources and the things they need.”

While Fantasia and Brooks scored Golden Globe nominations, many are unhappy with the overall snub The Color Purple received: It was not nominated for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, nor was Taraji P. Henson named in the Best Supporting Actress category, according to Forbes.
