Don Lemon Accused of Misogyny, Threats, And ‘Diva-Like Behavior’ At CNN

A scathing exposé aimed at Don Lemon has unearthed the CNN anchor’s long history of alleged misogyny, bullying, and “diva-like behavior.”

Lemon has been under fire since making a disparaging comment by claiming 51-year-old Nikki Haley isn’t a viable presidential candidate because she “isn’t in her prime.” Amid the scrutiny, Variety released a shocking report that revealed nearly 15 years of alleged antics that paint Lemon as a behind-the-scenes terror who used charm and name-dropping to avoid harsher punishment.

The alleged instances date back to 2008 when Lemon was co-anchoring CNN’s Live From weekday show with Kyra Phillips. Tension mounted between the two anchors, with Lemon reportedly being pulled off the air during commercial breaks due to his behavior.

Amid Lemon’s alleged feud with Phillips, she received a threatening text reading, “Now you’ve crossed the line, and you’re going to pay for it.” Following a human resources investigation, the texts were traced back to Lemon, who ended up getting pulled from his co-anchor duties with Phillips and moved to the weekends.

Elsewhere, those who worked with Lemon accused him of being a shameless name-dropper who boasted of winning racial discrimination lawsuits against Tower Records and the Chicago PD that garnered him large sums of money.

The veteran CNN anchor is also said to have broken a number of company rules, including dating a staffer 20 years his junior; Lemon was 41 and the employee was 21 at the time.

“As fast as you could make a rule, Don would bend it,” one senior executive said of Lemon.

Lemon is also accused of making misogynistic comments toward women, like calling them “fat” or mocking former anchor Nancy Grace. While Grace declined to comment, a close source said “she thinks he’s an ass” and that he was always “rude, dismissive and really unfamiliar with the [news] content being discussed.”

“That was the beginning of when you knew that Don was kind of volatile and didn’t say good things about women,” a witness claimed.

Lemon is also said to have taken aim at Soledad O’Brien after she was selected to host the Black in America docuseries in 2008. During an editorial meeting with 30 staffers, Lemon is accused of saying O’Brien wasn’t Black enough to host the series.

“Don always wanted to be front and center on anything high profile, especially anything involving race,” said a colleague.

O’Brien, supported the claims saying, “Don has long had a habit of saying idiotic and inaccurate things, so it sounds pretty on brand for him.”

When it comes to his “diva-like behavior,” insiders said Lemon was known to attend meetings late or not at all and display no interest during meetings. Reps for Lemon denied the claims and said the alleged text threat to Phillips never happened.

“Don says the alleged incident never occurred and that he was never notified of any investigation. CNN cannot corroborate the alleged events from 15 years ago.”

The famed CNN anchor remains on thin ice following his remarks on Haley and amid a drop in ratings for the news channel.

Apollo-Ready! UpStaged, Where ‘March Madness Meets Pitch Perfect,’ Takes Over The Fragmented Student Performing Arts Market

Enter UpStaged, where the arts are celebrated and rewarded.

Picture this — Harlem’s world-famous Apollo Theater buzzing with soulful percussions of footsteps, claps, and spoken word. Over 150 steppers set the iconic stage ablaze with poly-rhythmic movement and school pride at the upcoming 2023 National High School Performing Arts (NHSPA) Step Championship.

This history-making soiree, hosted and co-produced by UpStaged, the proud innovators in student “March Madness meets Pitch Perfect“-like competitions, is a must-see!

This high anticipation follows the devastating COVID-19 global pandemic and its alarming impact on 50% of high school step teams who disappeared during that time, according to the NHSPA. And yet UpStaged has continued to empower our world’s student performers to passionately celebrate the joy of competition.

What better way to re-energize than reuniting under one legendary roof?

Operating under the brands UpStaged, National Collegiate Performing Arts (NCPA), National High School Performing Arts (NHSPA), and National Summer Camp Performing Arts (NSCPA), the NYC- and LA-based College and High School Performing Arts platform is solidifying its indelible mark on the untapped, fragmented student performing market.

And yet there is more to the madness. UpStaged not only delivers the visually-rich content, but they strive to pour resources into student performers.

Talent and business leadership pave the way

From New York City’s Carnegie Hall to Lincoln Center, UpStaged Entertainment Group has been lighting up live and virtual stages since they began hosting in 2017. With an incredibly passionate team, including Director of Talent and Financial Management Victoria Duruh and Chief Executive Officer Stephen Hartman, UpStaged is highlighting the woeful disparities among performing arts genres compared to NCAA athletic programs.

“There are Business Week, Economist other rankings for colleges, law schools, engineering programs, med schools, sports programs etc. There is no comprehensive analysis, review and rankings of performing arts programs, particularly focused on the broadest level of performing arts offerings,” Duruh and Hartman said in a statement obtained by BLACK ENTERPRISE.

Hartman added, “Other people know a capella better, step better, gospel or one of the 25 in terms of the universe. We’ve spent hundreds of calls with universities on this. We have to acknowledge on it. So, ‘You can’t believe no-one’s done it, you sure no-one’s done it, then why has no-one done it?'”

As global demand expands at an unprecedented rate, UpStaged has reached out to over 400 universities to gain a better understanding of the collegiate performing arts landscape. They surveyed staff from dance departments, Black Student Unions, student activities, DEI directors, and student affairs and could not get a clear picture of the number of step teams currently performing at many of the schools surveyed.

A builder of the U.S. Sports Film Festival, Hartman brings a Wall Street leadership style alongside a passion for sports, performing arts, and building things. He emphasizes the lack of schools’ knowledge on how to monetize performing arts.

For example, many college step teams are underfunded and do not have the organizational infrastructure of college sports, such as an advisor or an athletic director. Many are even relegated to GoFundMe campaigns and local fundraising to fund their competitions. According to NHCPA research, “college step teams receive on average approximately .01% of the funds allocated to an average Crew Team from a division I University athletic program.” So, UpStaged offers crowdfunding and equity investments opportunities.

Hartman proclaimed, “At some point, we are going to be creating the Business Week-type rankings. We’re going to be doing it for performing arts. Because then schools will care.”

Hailing from a business savvy, Nigerian family, Duruh strives to create routine and structure at UpStaged. It was instilled in her at an early age the importance of education. She brings a tenacity that was she famous for in the modeling industry. After suffering a major stroke 12 years ago, the renowned fashion and model industry talent agent, casting director, and producer embarked on a major pivot.

At UpStaged, Duruh is now responsible for recruiting the talent, overseeing hiring, and on-boarding professionals to recruit and manage the talent in Step, a cappella and DJs in NYC and LA, and more.

“UpStaged is the NCAA, a national college performing arts, passionate about two things, education and performing arts. For me as well. It’s models and education, hands down,” Duruh said, who makes it her business to invite top agents in the fashion industry to watch students steal the show.

Moving on up to the Apollo

Elevating non-Greek performers, the Championship puts a spotlight on an art form that has a grand tradition of unity and camaraderie. Step has been passed through generations.

In that same spirit, guests can expect a full weekend of service, celebration, and stepping. In addition to the announcement of the National Champion crown, the line-up of events will include an HBCU pre-event reception Saturday (Delaware State, Florida A&M, Howard and Lincoln), a college panel for Harlem youth and families, and a celebrity after party.

“we will have the famous Harry Belafonte family coming in, and this is awesome. I know the family for many, many years and his granddaughter, amazing,” Duruh said. “She sings, she dance. She’s a model, activist. And she’s excited to be a part of UpStaged Entertainment Group, and she’s 19 years old at Columbia University.”

If you haven’t already, don’t forget to get to snag your tickets at ticketmaster.com and The Apollo box office

Megan Thee Stallion Might Be Turning Shania Twain Into A ‘Savage’

Let’s see what happens if these new besties’ two worlds collide.

After rapper Megan Thee Stallion presented country artist Shania Twain with the Equal Play Award at the 2023 CMT Music Awards in Austin, TX on Sunday, the two just might be heading towards a possible collaboration.

During Meg’s speech for Twain, she paused and told the audience, “I don’t want to cheese this hard because I just met her and that’s my new bestie.”

“She’s hot girl Shania,” Meg added, saying Twain is an inspiration to her and many others.

According to People, Twain expressed interest in meeting and working with the 28-year-old “Savage” rapper following the awards.

“I love her. What a sweetheart,” the 57-year-old performer told Entertainment Tonight. “We were sitting together in the audience. We really gelled very well. I really love her as a person.”

“She’s a great talent. I was just glad she didn’t ask me to twerk out there, you know? I would’ve had to say no. That I cannot do,” Twain joked. “She was amazing and said so many sweet things. I was really flattered that she was there for me.”

This isn’t the first time this year Twain expressed interest in working with younger artists. The “Any Man of Mine” singer  told People about her desire at the 2023 Grammys in February.

“At this point, I’d love to just have more fun getting together with other artists,” Twain said.

“I’m running into a lot of young artists now that were little kids when my first albums came out, so I feel like I’m having a reunion with them, and we can have adult conversations,” Twain continued. “They’re not 6 anymore. They’re all grown-up! So, I think that would be really surreal thing to do, would be to collab with some of these kids that aren’t kids anymore.”

Twain also slid in her interest for a collaboration with boundary-pushing artist Beyoncé Knowles-Carter. “She’s so extraordinary,” the country singer said.

Tyler Perry

Tyler Perry Doubles Down on Interest in BET: ‘I’m Very, Very Interested in Taking…. as Much of it as I Can’

Rumors have been circulating that Paramount wants to unload its majority stake in the BET Network. Tyler Perry’s name has been mentioned as a frontrunner. Now, the filmmaking entrepreneur has confirmed that it is not a rumor and that “he is very, very interested in taking as much of it.”

In an exclusive interview with Entertainment Tonight, Perry expressed his interest in being the majority owner of the formerly Black-owned network.

While being interviewed by Entertainment Tonight’s Nischelle Turner on the set of his latest movie, Six Triple Eight, at Tyler Perry Studios, Perry erases any doubt about his interest in becoming the majority owner of BET.

“Rumor? No, it’s not a rumor,” Perry told Turner. “I’ve been there for four years now and had tremendous success. I wasn’t expecting this to happen, so, yes — if that is possible, I’m very, very interested in taking as much of it…”

He reiterated his plan to get as much of BET as he could.

“If it’s possible, I’m gonna take as much of it as I can.”

The successful writer and director also mention that he knows of efforts by other people of color, like Sean “Diddy” Combs and Byron Allen to want to be the next Black owner of BET.

“Part of it is — and I’ve read about Byron Allen and Puffy and everybody wanting to bid and so on and so forth, and I think it’s really great. This is what I love about it — when Bob Johnson sold it in 2000, I think it was, there wasn’t one Black person who could buy it. So now, to see all of these Black people, men, and women, who are able to be in a position to buy it? Man, that makes me feel really, really excited.”

He credits the current network owner with keeping it relevant so it didn’t “fall by the wayside.”

“I think there was sadness when Bob sold it, and I think there’ll be happiness when it’s Black-owned again. And even though Shari and what is it? Viacom and Paramount? They’ve done a phenomenal job with it. They didn’t let it fall by the wayside; they didn’t let it go into dust. They nurtured it and took care of it. And to see Shari at this position saying, ‘I think it should be returned to a Black owner?’ I figured, OK, see, that’s my kind of person.'”

BET was started as a Black-owned entity in 1980 by Robert L. Johnson, owner of  The RLJ Cos.) and his wife, Sheila Johnson, until he sold the network to Viacom in 2000 for $2.3 billion, making him the first Black billionaire. BET was the first cable network to cater to Black audiences specifically.

In October 2019, Perry opened Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta. The successful filmmaker, actor, director, and producer turned a former Army base into a brand new 330-acre studio, making him the first African American to own a major film production studio.

It’s ‘The Rock’: Disney Greenlights ‘Moana’ Live-Action Film Produced By Dwayne Johnson

It’s ‘The Rock’: Disney Greenlights ‘Moana’ Live-Action Film Produced By Dwayne Johnson

Live action versions of beloved Disney films are the talk of the town lately and ‘Moana’ is next on the list.

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, who voiced the fan-favorite demi-God Maui in the original film, announced the news earlier this week in a video via Twitter saying, “Humbled to say we’re bringing #MOANA’s beautiful story to the live action big screen! #MAUI changed my life (miss you grandpa) and I’m honored to partner with @DisneyStudios to tell our story thru the realm of music & dance, which at the core is who we are as Polynesian people.” In the video, which features The Rock and his two youngest daughters, Jasmine and Tiana, the wrestler turned movie star shared that the project is still in preliminary talks; however, he will be joining the cast.

“It’s still very early in the process. There’s so much more work to be done. But until then, there is one more thing that I need to kick this journey off right. Girls do you want to get that special thing that Daddy needs?” he said as they brought him Maui’s staff. “Wow, you guys are daddy’s daughters. You are so strong.” Johnson will be joined by Auli‘l Cravalho, who is the original voice of Moana, as executive producer on the live-action reimagining.

Moana was a massive hit in theaters worldwide when it debuted in 2016 and quickly became one of Disney’s most heralded family movies. The film featured a soundtrack of original music written by Tony-winning Hamilton creator, Lin Manuel Miranda, and went on to win a Grammy and to be nominated for an Oscar. There is no word on when this remake will hit theaters or who will play the titular role, as Cravalho will not be reprising it; however, the film’s original screenwriter, Jared Bush, will be returning alongside Dana Ledoux Mille, who is of Samoan heritage.

‘The Little Mermaid’ Soundtrack Updated With Lyrics To Include Consent

The Little Mermaid creators are working to ensure its upcoming presentation won’t be picked apart by viewers.

The live-action film has undergone a few updates to its soundtrack as popular songs like “Kiss the Girl” and “Poor Unfortunate Souls” have modified their lyrics to allow consent.

“There are some lyric changes in ‘Kiss the Girl’ because people have gotten very sensitive about the idea that [Prince Eric] would, in any way, force himself on [Ariel],” said Alan Menken, the artist who collaborated with Howard Ashman on the film’s original soundtrack.

According to Deadline, Menken worked with Lin-Manuel Miranda to update some of the lyrics to modern times.

Recent updates include the scene where “Kiss the Girl” plays as Prince Eric is encouraged to kiss Ariel, who doesn’t have a voice. Lines in “Poor Unfortunate Souls” were also revised for Ursula’s line, “The men up there don’t like a lot of blabber, they think a girl who gossips is a bore, yet on land, it’s much preferred for ladies not to say a word.”

“We have some revisions in ‘Poor Unfortunate Souls’ regarding lines that might make young girls somehow feel that they shouldn’t speak out of turn, even though Ursula is manipulating Ariel to give up her voice,” Menken said.

The Little Mermaid is directed by Rob Marshall with a screenplay by David Magee. Singer and actress Halle Bailey was cast to play the lead role of Ariel in the upcoming live-action version, inspiring many Black girls since the initial announcement of the role.

The cast includes Melissa McCarthy as Ursula, Javier Bardem as King Triton, and Daveed Diggs as Sebastian. The film also features Awkwafina, Jacob Tremblay, Noma Dumezweni, and more.

The Little Mermaid hits theaters on May 26. Disney released a new poster for the live-action film last month.

Federal Reserve To Launch Instant Pay Service ‘FedNow’ in July

Federal Reserve To Launch Instant Pay Service ‘FedNow’ in July

The Federal Reserve announced that their long-awaited instant pay service, FedNow, will launch this summer.

The network will give users the ability to pay in seconds and support a variety of payments, including consumer-to-consumer, consumer-to-merchant, merchant-to-merchant, and bank-to-bank.

“With the FedNow Service, the Federal Reserve is creating a leading-edge payments system that is resilient, adaptive, and accessible,” said Tom Barkin, president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond and the FedNow Program’s executive sponsor. “The launch reflects an important milestone in the journey to help financial institutions serve customer needs for instant payments to better support nearly every aspect of our economy.”

The Reserve says that the country’s leading banks are on board for the service, and transactions are already being tested. “With the launch drawing near, we urge financial institutions and their industry partners to move full steam ahead with preparations to join the FedNow Service,” said Ken Montgomery, first vice president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston and FedNow program executive. Montgomery also explained that availability is only the first step to implementing FedNow. Growing the number of participating financial institutions is a crucial component to making instant payments accessible to consumers and businesses across the country.

This week, the Fed began certifying banks to take part in the service via the FedNow Pilot Program. “The Fed maintains making funds immediately available will help Americans living paycheck to paycheck or small businesses with cash flow constraints by avoiding late payment fees and freeing up working capital to finance growth”, according to Yahoo News.

Analysts say FedNow could also help weaken the need for payday loans as citizens won’t have to wait for a check to clear. For businesses, there is also an upside for better-paying suppliers on time, and businesses could embrace it as a less costly, and more certain, way to accept payments.

I’m Out: Snoop Dogg Resigns From Esports Company FaZe Clan As Stake Plummets

Snoop Dogg is no stranger to using his crossover appeal to collect his coins.

With his hand in everything from apparel to cereal and, of course, his own cannabis company, no one was surprised to see him joining in on the esports craze when he announced partnering with FaZe Clan.

“As the original internet kid and first generation gamer, Snoop more than anyone has always understood the cultural connection between music, lifestyle and gaming,” FaZe Clan’s Chief Strategy Officer Kai Henry said at the time, according to The Hollywood Reporter. “Today, Snoop is a leading voice in the emerging Web3 community and we have tremendous plans to create together in the metaverse, driving new engagement opportunities for both of our fanbases.”

Since making things official following his performance at the Super Bowl in 2022, things have seemed to sour between the company and the Death Row Records owner, with the latter walking away from his role on the Board of Directors. Snoop was not alone in his decision.

As FaZe Clan has failed to live up to its projected $91 million in sales in 2022, falling short by over $20 million, many executives also resigned. According to Sportico, the West Coast rapper’s stock in the company hit $7.4 million in the summer of 2022. The site also reported that he received restricted-share awards that totaled 320,000 shares of FaZe stock, equivalent to $3.9 million, at the time. His total earnings as a member of the FaZe Clan and its board of directors for a little over a year will be an estimated $53,184 and he will “probably” exit the partnership with close to 106,000 FaZe shares.

It seems that Snoop’s interest in the company was birthed from his son, Cordell Broadus‘, involvement. “The youth identifies with their brand and that’s something my son Cordell knew, which is why he brought us together,” he said at the time.

Goldman Sachs Announces $2.1 Billion Investment With One Million Black Women Initiative

Goldman Sachs Announces $2.1 Billion Investment With One Million Black Women Initiative

Goldman Sachs is investing in Black women-owned businesses with a program that will take their business to the next level.

CNBC reports the global investment bank invested $2.1 billion into businesses and nonprofits with the firm’s One Million Black Women initiative. Started in 2021, One Million Black Women was created to positively impact 1 million Black women by 2030. Goldman Sachs has committed $10 billion in investment capital and $100 million in philanthropic capital, focusing on access to capital, affordable housing, healthcare, education, job creation, workforce advancement, digital connectivity, and financial health.

Global Head of Corporate Engagement and President of the Goldman Sachs Foundation Asahi Pompey, said this is the first step to a much bigger plan. “Turbo boosting Black women entrepreneurs is a key part of the work that we do,” Pompey said. “We know they create jobs. When a Black woman entrepreneur is able to grow her business, she employs Black people in the community; she’s a leader in that community, she mentors individuals in that community.”

“The ripple effect of investing in a Black woman entrepreneur is tremendous.”

The One Million Black Women’s advisory council already has some heavy hitters sitting at the table. Earlier this week, members such as Obama Foundation CEO Valerie Jarrett, former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, and actress and producer Issa Rae met to announce how this initiative would provide $23 million in philanthropic capital to assist close to 215,000 Black women.

“When Black women succeed, America succeeds,” Jarrett said, according to Shine My Crown. “You bet on Black women, that is a good bet. Goldman Sachs recognizes that and that Black Women have a track record of delivering.”

Research by economists shows the best way to close the gap in racial wealth is by investing in Black women.

Grandma Who Was Once in Bad Shape Deadlifts 310 Pounds at Eighty Years Old

You might not want to disrespect this Detroit grandma.

Nora Langdon was in her mid-sixties when she realized she needed to make a change in her life. Now, at 80 years old, she astonished the world after a video of the senior deadlifting 310 pounds went viral.

According to The U.S. Sun, this strength is no biggie for “Ms. Nora,” as she is a weightlifting champion who has been dedicated to the sport for over 15 years, boasting around 20 national and world records.

https://twitter.com/Mr_JCE/status/1639327719543406592?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1639327719543406592%7Ctwgr%5E1c38d1c17e6987893b2d13ed74354e7e4049540e%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Ftheshadowleague.com%2Feighty-year-old-ms-nora-deadlifts-310-pounds-nothing-new-for-the-world-champion%2F

Langdon discovered her weightlifting passion at 65 years old. In 2022, she told CBS that she was in bad shape and weighed too much to even walk downstairs without feeling tired. She began training with Art Little at The Royal Oak Gym in Michigan.

“She watched us getting ready for a powerlifting meet and asked a question I’ll never forget it; ‘Do you have any old broads doing that?’ And I said ‘Yeah,'” Little told Fox 2 Detroit in 2021. “She came and watched us at the meet and said she wanted to do it.”

“You just have to put your mind to it,” Langdon said. “Your mind and your body and be consistent. As long as you’re consistent you can do it.”

“To see somebody at that age doing what she’s doing it’s a blessing,” Little added.

“When I squat this is what I say, I say ‘Holy Spirit fall on me,’ and I just do it and I come right on up,” the spirit-filled grandma said.

Reportedly, Langdon trained for two years before competing. She was dedicated to mastering the squat, deadlift, and bench press. “She broke all the national world records the first competition,” Little told CBS.

Langdon holds personal bests of 413 pounds in the squat, 381 pounds in the deadlift, and 203 pounds for the bench press.

The national and world record holder created her own website, Nora Lifts Heavy, where fans can show their support by purchasing “Jazzi Nora” merchandise.
