Breaking Tradition and Avoiding Holiday Burnout: 7 Ways To Keep Stress Out Of The Holiday Season

It’s the holiday season. A time for celebration. A time for traditions. Cue the holiday music, mouth-watering meals, opening gifts, and overall holiday cheer.

While these images can stir fond memories and activate happy hormones like oxytocin and dopamine, they also usually come with an extra serving of stress and anxiety. Getting to those happy moments usually means enduring long shopping lines and holiday traffic; battling other holiday shoppers as you select the “perfect” gifts for a long list of family and friends; standing on your feet for hours as you prepare your favorite dishes; and spending more money than you planned or could afford. Plus, some may feel overwhelmed with the guilt and sadness around people and relationships they have lost. By the time the holiday events arrive, you may feel exhausted, depleted, and annoyed–a sign of holiday burnout.

What is Holiday Burnout?

Holiday burnout captures the feelings of exhaustion, disengagement, resentment and overwhelming that can result from the pressure to “do it all” for the holidays, without considering what you really want. Many people experience internal and/or external pressures to create experiences that stem from childhood traditions. And, as it can feel extremely unpopular to break from tradition, people often end up re-creating traditions that cause major stress.

Breaking from Tradition

During the pandemic, there was a break from these traditions as many were forced to reimagine the holiday, due to quarantine protocols. As a result, people significantly changed how they spent the season, which meant less cooking, less shopping, less decorating, and less spending. All of which translated to less stress. Now, as we approach the 2022 holiday season, it is clear that people are moving “back to normal” and back to stressful holiday planning. But guess what? You do not have to. You have the opportunity to break away from tradition, and to create a holiday season that is meaningful to you – and less stressful, too.

Looking for new ways to take the stress out of the holiday season? Follow these seven emotional wellbeing tips to help you reduce stress and avoid holiday burnout:

Write down your ideal holiday plan

Take some time to write down what each holiday means to you and how you would ideally like to enjoy it. For example, which holiday is most important to you? Who would you want to be present? Which activities do you want to attend and which ones would you rather skip? How many activities do you feel capable of attending without feeling stressed? How far do you want to travel? How much time do you want to spend engaging in different activities (e.g., cooking/baking, shopping, attending parties, etc)? Once you have answered these questions, you will have a good sense of what will work best for you, which can help you to create your holiday plan.

Communicate your holiday plan to those around you

Now that you have your plan, it’s time to share it with the people around you. Having these conversations may feel stressful, as you may worry about disappointing others or changing their plans, but it will be less stressful than carrying out the actual activity. In addition, giving the people involved advance notice will give them time to come up with an alternate plan. So don’t wait until the last minute to talk to them. Also, be prepared for people to push against your boundary. Let them know that it is a difficult time, or that you are being intentional in reducing your stress. By being vulnerable, they are more likely to understand. If they do not, then you will know that these are individuals who do not have your best interests in mind.

Practice mindfulness

According to the American Psychological Association (2019) Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is an intervention that has been proven to reduce stress. Data compiled by Zuckerman (2020) shows that 60% of people who practice mindfulness meditation show a reduction in stress and anxiety. The three (3) main components of mindfulness are:

  • Breathe: Intentional breathing can help to slow down your heart rate, regulate your emotions, and help you respond to tough situations such as being stuck in traffic, waiting in long lines, or dealing with a problematic comment from a family member. Try a simple breathing technique such as box breathing (inhale on a count of 4; hold for a count of 4; exhale for a count of 4; hold for a count of 4; repeat 4 times) and notice how you feel afterwards. [See image below]
  • Be present: Focusing on your surroundings can help you to stay grounded and stop you from worrying too much about the past or the future. Simply engaging the five senses in the various activities you do such as walking, cooking, washing dishes, or eating can help to slow down your thoughts and help you feel more in control.
  • Show self-compassion: Many people have a harsh inner critic or negative self-talk that can get worse during the holidays, especially as there are so many unrealistic expectations to be perfect. For example, being the “perfect” host; purchasing the “perfect” gifts; preparing the “perfect” meal; or outdoing a previous holiday celebration. Show yourself some empathy, give yourself grace, and discard those unattainable standards.

Get Sleep

One of the fastest ways to burnout is sleep deprivation, and getting caught up in the busyness of the holiday season can easily disrupt sleep routines. Stress can significantly impact sleep, making it harder to fall asleep or causing people to have restless sleep. So, reduce the task list, and find ways to settle your body and mind (e.g., mindfulness, meditation) before your head hits the pillow.

Move your body

The holiday season tends to be marked by excessive eating, consuming beverages high in sugar and foods high in carbs, and muscle strain due to long hours standing or sitting. After a big meal, start a new tradition by taking a stroll. For those spending long hours on their feet shopping or preparing meals, try stretching to relax those fatigued muscles. Getting out for exercise or even a short walk can also help you to sleep better.

Do something that makes you smile

Remember the holiday season is about joy and one way to counter holiday burnout is to bring joy in whatever you do. For example, create a playlist of your favorite holiday songs or songs that make you smile and put you in a good mood. If music is not your thing, consider watching a favorite movie or TV show that reminds you of the joy of the season. Just do something that makes you smile.

Plan a rest day

It can be very easy to get caught up in the “on-the-go” mentality that is synonymous with the holidays. You can step out of the fast pace by planning a rest day. This will definitely be needed if you were not able to follow steps one through six above. Make sure to build in a day or two where your calendar is empty and you can curl up on the couch with a good book or magazine or watch a favorite show. Take time to rest. You deserve it.

Coming out of the pandemic, people are feeling the pressure to go back to the old ways of doing things. Take this time to reflect on what is most important to you and give yourself permission to create a holiday season that is filled with joy and low on stress. Remember, it will be challenging to enjoy the holiday season if you are stressed and burnt out, so only do those things that bring you joy.

Officials Urge Parents To Supervise Their Children Following Deadly Shooting In Atlanta

Officials Urge Parents To Supervise Their Children Following Deadly Shooting In Atlanta

Georgia officials are urging parents to supervise their children, following a deadly shooting in Atlanta on 17th Street near Atlantic Station.

Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens joined Police Chief Darin Schierbaum and Atlanta Public Schools superintendent Lisa Herring for a news conference to address the incident at the popular shopping plaza, and the violence between teenagers in the city overall. According to Fox 5 Atlanta, Dickens spoke to the families of 12-year-old Zyion Charles, who was killed in the shooting, and those injured.

The incident reportedly occurred after a dispute escalated to gunfire near the shopping plaza. Officials say an off-duty Atlanta police officer and Atlantic Station security guards escorted a group of juveniles away from Atlantic Station before the shooting happened.

A policy implemented in January by the neighborhood and retail district stated that no one under the age of 18 was allowed on the premises without a parent or guardian after 3 p.m. Additionally, one adult could only accompany a maximum of four minors, and no one under the age of 21 was permitted on the property after 9 p.m. At the time the policy was announced, Fox 5 reported that officials said it would be strictly enforced. Although, the outlet also reported that some parents were unaware of the curfew.

An Atlantic Station spokesperson told the news station there were over 500 surveillance cameras throughout the property. In addition, a 24/7 security team was also reportedly in place.

“They were all still in shock and devastated by the situation,” Dickens told Fox 5 Atlanta.

“They also communicated they didn’t know their student was here at the time.”

Chief Schierbaum stated during the news conference that some of the individuals involved in the incident are known by the Atlanta Police Department, and he expects investigators to issue warrants soon.

“It is our commitment to do all that we can to support parents in need,” Herring said during the news conference.

Superintendent Lisa Herring stated that if parents think their child needs support, they should let Atlanta Public Schools know.

Husband of Xscape Singer LaTocha Scott Accused of Expecting Love Child With Instagram Model

The tea is piping hot this morning amid rumors that LaTocha Scott’s husband had an affair with another woman!

Over the weekend, an Instagram model by the name of Unykue Foucha took to the platform to post alleged receipts revealing her claims of carrying on an affair with LaTocha’s husband Rocky Bivens.

“The most f**ked up thing the universe can do to you is let you meet the right person at the wrong time,” Foucha captioned a post captured by The Shade Room.

“I’m just tired of living a lie all these years and ready to live in my truth freely and in peace unapologetically.”

Unykue continued, “I have no beef with Latocha, never interfered with any of his dealings with Xscape, never made him choose. Me and Rocky had our own situation. I know this may be shocking news but this was a very complicated relationship that I couldn’t speak on for obvious reasons.”

The Instagram model ended her scathing post by saying, “Life can be a b***h and ima make sure mines is beautiful either way. It is what it is.”

The post included two photos, one with Foucha and Bivens smiling for a selfie, and an ultrasound showing what many believe is Bivens’ and Foucha’s baby.

The shocking allegations come amid LaTocha’s clear divide with her Xscape group members over a variety of issues, including LaTocha’s claim that one promoter was disrespectful to her husband.

“The reason I am not doing the tour is because the promoter the girls are on tour with threatened my husband’s life,” LaTocha wrote in her lengthy post, That Grape Juice reports.

Amid the cheating rumors, social media is sounding off with shady replies to the marital drama.

Morehouse College Professor Teaches Black History Course In The Metaverse

A new way of teaching will immerse students in history by allowing them to experience historical events in the metaverse.

Morehouse College in Atlanta is set to launch a first-of-its-kind Black history course that will be taught entirely in the metaverse. According to NBC News, the course will open in the spring and will be led by professor Ovell Hamilton. Students enrolled in the course will enter the virtual 3D space to experience the lives of enslaved African Americans. The course, which is a part of the Virtual Reality Project, will be titled “History of the African Diaspora Since 1800.”

Content for the course is inspired by “Journey for Civil Rights,” a separate Black History course Hamilton instructed through VictoryXR, the tech company Morehouse partnered with. The course will recreate important moments and artifacts beginning with the Haitian Revolution, leading to the civil rights movement.

“That is an experience that they would not have if they were sitting in a classroom, if they were sitting in a lecture,” Hamilton said regarding the virtual experience of the La Amistad slave ship.

“When you go there and see the bottom of a slave ship, see the slaves packed in together…you will have a new appreciation and you have a greater knowledge of how the events took place.”

Students will experience the brutal reality of enslaved Africans shackled on top of one another while others stand at the edge of the vessel choosing between life and death. “It definitely evokes emotions of sorrow,” said Morehouse sophomore Jerad Evan Young, a Black student majoring in cinema, television, and emerging media studies.

Young had the opportunity to virtually tour the Underground Railroad and a slave ship in Hamilton’s world history class.

“Also, there’s a sense of pride because not everybody made it through the slave trade,” Young added.

“You know, you had to really be a strong individual. So, that let me know that my ancestors were strong enough to last that grueling journey across the sea.”

Morehouse College reportedly made history this past spring after launching its first official course in the metaverse. Hamilton was designated to teach students using the virtual technology, along with 10 other professors.

Enrollees can experience historical moments such as attending Martin Luther King Jr.’s 1963 “I Have a Dream” speech in Washington, entering an all-white high school in Arkansas in 1957, and touring a slave ship.

AllHipHop reported that Newkirk dropped his solo project, Funk City, via the OBR/Columbia Records imprint, which was a subsidiary of Def Jam Records in 1989. Funk City released two singles, I Desire and Sweat You.

In an exclusive interview with AllHipHop last year, the artist spoke about his debut as an artist.

Funk City was like in a mode of me experimenting, learning instrumentation and learning how to use my voice in a different way other than just rapping,” Newkirk stated. “Because I was never a singer. I was always an MC. But I just felt like I could express what I was trying to save better with melody back then. So it came out more so as Funk City, which I think is dope because it gave people a whole different element of me. And just that whole time of like what was going on our crew.”

In 2020, Newkirk collaborated with Stetsonic group member and De La Soul producer, Prince Paul, to compose the score for the Netflix documentary, Who Killed Malcolm X.

From Football to Street Brawl: Terrell Owens Knocks Man to the Ground Outside Inglewood CVS

Many years removed from playing football in the NFL, Terrell Owens still has got the brawn, as evidenced in a video where he engaged in fisticuffs with someone in Inglewood, California.

The former NFL player was seen in a video posted on the TMZ Sports website making light work of a man taunting a football fan who claims allegiance to the San Francisco 49ers. The man engaged in conversation with Owens that soon went south.

On Saturday night, at approximately 11:30 PM, the shirtless man was allegedly harassing other people in the CVS Owens went into. As Owens was speaking to a 49ers fan, the shirtless man, according to Owens, started messing with the football fan. Owens said he was trying to play peacemaker when this happened.

Witnesses told the media outlet that the shirtless man threatened not only the football fan but also the NFL Hall of Fame wide receiver. That’s when things escalated. The shirtless man took a swing at Owens, — and soon found out that was a mistake.

Owens swings at the man and connects, and as they both dance around, Owens hits him with a combination of three punches and knocks him to the ground.

The man finally gets up, seemingly groggy, looking like he may have wanted more punishment. Unfortunately, from the position of the camera, no vocals were heard. But, as Owens starts to walk away, the shirtless man looks like he is going to attack the Hall of Famer, but it doesn’t happen, and Owens is seen walking away from the lopsided fight.

Witnesses did state that there were no calls to the police,e and no other scuffles occurred after Owens showed off his boxing skills against the shirtless man.

Former President Donald Trump Calls Kanye West a ‘Seriously Troubled Man’ After Backlash From Meeting

Former President Donald Trump Calls Kanye West a ‘Seriously Troubled Man’ After Backlash From Meeting

Former President Donald Trump called rapper Kanye West a “seriously troubled man” after receiving significant backlash for meeting with the rapper days earlier.

Fox News reported that the former president was also criticized for meeting with rapper and white supremacist, Nick Fuentes, at his Mar-a-Lago home.

“So I help a seriously troubled man, who just happens to be Black, Ye (Kanye West), who has been decimated in his business and virtually everything else, and who has always been good to me, by allowing his request for a meeting at Mar-a-Lago, alone, so that I can give him very much needed ‘advice’,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social account, according to Fox.

“He shows up with 3 people, two of which I didn’t know, the other a political person who I haven’t seen in years. I told him don’t run for office, a total waste of time, can’t win. Fake News went CRAZY!”

Several prominent Jewish leaders, including David Friedman, who served as the Trump administration’s U.S. ambassador to Israel, have criticized the former president for the meeting at his Palm Beach estate.

According to multiple reports, during the meeting West asked Trump to be his vice president, which Trump didn’t take well, according to the rapper.

“I think the thing that Trump was most perturbed about was me asking him to be my vice president.” West claimed, adding that Trump was also “caught off guard” by the fact that he “walked in with intelligence.

“So, Trump is really impressed by Nick Fuentes,” West added. “And Nick Fuentes, unlike so many of the lawyers and so many people, that he was left with on his 2020 campaign, he’s actually a loyalist.”

Others who blasted Trump for the meeting included Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson, who told USA Today the meeting was “not accidental.”

Hutchinson added that “it’s not a good idea for a leader that’s setting an example for the country or the party to meet with avowed racists or antisemites.”

“It’s very troubling and it shouldn’t happen,” Hutchinson said. “We need to avoid those kinds of empowering the extremes. When you meet with people you empower, and that’s what you have to avoid. You want to diminish their strength, not empower them. Stay away from them.”

West recently lost his billionaire status as numerous partnerships were terminated due to his controversial anti-semitic statements. Trump, meanwhile, announced his third run for president earlier this month. However, after many of the candidates he endorsed lost in the Midterm Elections, his announcement came with less excitement than his previous presidential runs.

Navy Sailor Speaks Out After Being Credited With Disarming Mass Shooter In Colorado

Navy Sailor Speaks Out After Being Credited With Disarming Mass Shooter In Colorado

A member of the U.S. Navy spoke out on Sunday, after being injured while helping prevent further harm during last week’s shooting at a gay nightclub in Colorado.

CBS News reported that Petty Officer 2nd Class Thomas James made his first public comments regarding the shooting that left five people dead and 17 injured. James issued his statement through Centura Penrose Hospital in Colorado Springs, where he is recovering from undisclosed injuries suffered during the Nov. 19 attack. Thomas stated that he “simply wanted to save the family that I found.”

In the statement, James said:

“If I had my way, I would shield everyone I could from the nonsensical acts of hate in the world, but I am only one person. Thankfully, we are a family, and family looks after one another.”

“I want to support everyone who has known the pain and loss that have been all too common these past few years.”

“My thoughts are with those we lost on Nov. 19, and those who are still recovering from their injuries.”

According to the outlet, Colorado Springs Police Chief Adrian Vasquez stated that James was one of two men who helped stop the shooter who walked into Club Q during a drag queen’s birthday celebration.

CBS News reported that the suspect entered the nightclub with multiple firearms, including a semiautomatic rifle, when James pushed a rifle out of the shooter’s reach.

James also received help from Army veteran Rich Fierro, who repeatedly struck the shooter with a handgun the shooter had brought into the bar, officials said.

CBS News reported that the suspect, 22-year-old Anderson Lee Aldrich, was visibly injured during his initial court appearance on Wednesday, where he was ordered to be held without bail.

Formal charges have not been filed yet against Aldrich, who has not yet spoken about the shooting.
