A Seat at the Table: Black Executives Discuss Landing On Corporate Boards at Black Men Xcel Summit

Three Black corporate executives sat down for a lunchtime conversation on how Black men and women can get on corporate boards at the Black Men Xcel Summit.

The chat featured Citizens Bancshares Corporation Chairman Ray Robinson, FedEx Senior Vice President Shannon Brown and Thompson Hospitality Corporation Chairman Warren M. Thompson. The chat was hosted by Black Enterprise Editor-in-Chief Derek Dingle.

Robinson, who serves on numerous corporate boards, including American Airlines, the Georgia Aquarium and Progressive Finance, started the panel by discussing why corporate boards are important and why Black Men and women should be represented on them.

“I think it’s obvious to me why it’s important that we seek out opportunities to be on corporate boards Because we basically are the ones that keep America in business,” Robinson told the panel. “We’re active consumers and the way you ensure that you get a piece of the pie is and that your community is being served well is you have to have a voice in the boardroom where decisions are being made and so I firmly believe that the idea of being on a corporate board gives you a voice at the table and a voice that really matters.

“Why do I think it’s important for African-Americans to be there, because we represent a very large part of the consumer base for just about every company in the world.”

According to Harvard, there were 449 new board members appointed in Fortune 500 companies in 2022 Black people accounted for six percent of corporate board seats.

Thompson added that when it comes to equity pledges corporations made in 2020 the role the board should play is ensuring the company acts on its pledges.

“When pledges and Commitments are made, it goes back to the accountability aspect of it,” Brown, who has been with FedEx for more than four decades, told the panel. ”The board should hold the CEO accountable to execute and deliver on those promises so absolutely, the board has a role in that.”

Thompson also talked about DEI pledges and strategies saying that if companies just hire people, their strategy will fail. Instead, it has to be a coordinated effort, which can’t be done overnight.

“DEI is a strategy just like any other strategy, You can’t just go out and say I want to hire two of these and three of these and say okay I have a DEI program, as Ray just stated that’s not sustainable,” Brown added.

“A good DEI strategy and organization understand how people come into an organization, who’s being groomed, who’s being developed, who’s being given the responsibilities so people can see them and what they do and that takes time, so it has to be a strategy.”

The men also touched on how Black men and women can start their path to corporate boards.

”The first boards I joined gave me access to CEOs for major corporations so that was the first step to getting into that club, if you will. Things have changed from 25 years ago, now there are agencies out there that really work for the boards and screen and do a lot of recruiting.”

Thompson added on of the most prominent one of the most prominent recruiters is The Ferguson Group out of Chicago which has established an African-American advisory board to find qualified African-Americans for corporate boards.

According to Thompson, there are another 10 boards like the  Ferguson group that do the same.

Thompson added one of the most prominent recruiters is the Ferguson group out of Chicago which has established an African-American advisory board to find qualified African Americans for corporate boards.

According to Thompson, there are more boards like this focused on getting more Black people on corporate boards.

“I would suggest getting to know people through university associations and nonprofit associations but also going through the agencies and getting your resume in their data bank

Black-owned Businesses Take the Hardest Financial Hit, Causing Closures Years After the Pandemic

Black-owned Businesses Take the Hardest Financial Hit, Causing Closures Years After the Pandemic

During the height of the pandemic, many companies encountered major setbacks in their business endeavors. However, Black business owners reportedly experienced a higher impact on their earnings causing them to undergo major financial loss, according to a recent study.

According to Chicago Business, Robert Fairlie, an economics professor at the University of California at Santa Cruz, shared statistics in a report distributed by the National Bureau of Economic Research. The provided statistics show that Black-owned businesses saw earnings decrease by 28% in 2020 as opposed to the 15% drop White-owned businesses encountered and a 17% overall decline.

“The disproportionate business earnings losses among business owners of color in the pandemic contributed to widening broader economic inequality setting back one of the long-term goals of fostering minority business development,” Fairlie wrote in the report.

Minority-owned businesses were also majorly impacted by the pandemic in areas including leisure, hospitality, and trade.

“Business owners make up 10% of the workforce and are a significant engine in job creation. Minority business owners tend to hire diverse workers, which in turn narrows economic inequality gaps,” Fairlie wrote. “Losses to business earnings may be especially damaging for job creation and economic stability in low-income and disadvantaged neighborhoods,” he included.

According to Business Insider, a new 2022 report from Meta shows that small Black-owned businesses were experiencing record-low sales following the pandemic. The report surveyed 5,324 small-business leaders in the US, and more than 24,000 globally, and found that businesses run by underrepresented founders were 14% more likely to report lower sales than others. In addition, 51% of Black-owned businesses were experiencing record-low sales compared to January 2021, versus 36% of all US businesses.

“Black-owned businesses have faced additional hardships, such as reducing employment, as a result of the pandemic,” Nicola Mendelsohn, the vice president of Meta’s global business group told Insider. “They’ve also cited cash-flow issues and a lack of demand as reasons behind lower sales.”

Dozens of funny stories were shared at the BLACK ENTERPRISE 2022 Black Men Xcel Summit, however, it was a story NBA Hall of Famer Grant Hill told about how he got interested in basketball that stunned the crowd.

Hill, who received an Xcel award for his business acumen, real estate ventures and commitment to helping Black men fight prostate cancer, took the stage Thursday night and told the story about growing up and going to his first basketball game with his dad at his alma mater Yale University.

Hill admitted that he was a football guy and never had b-ball on his radar. That is until Hill caught the  6-foot-3 BLACK ENTERPRISE CEO who played for Yale dominating on the court. That changed everything.

“My father played in the NFL for 13 years and I grew up always loving ball. When my dad retired he wanted to reconnect with his school, Yale University,” Hill began his tale.

“I remember in 1981 and 1982 going to Payne Whitney gym, at the time I had never been to a real basketball game but we watched and there was this guy out there who was about 6’3 and was just unstoppable. I went a couple of times that year and later that year I got to watch Georgetown and Patrick Ewing, and so between Ewing and Butch Graves I converted From being a football guy to a basketball guy.”

Ed Gordon, the president of Ed Gordon Media, who was the M.C. of the Xcel Awards, told his own story about Graves as Hill walked off the stage.

“You all remember the show Good Times? a lot of you watched it, some of you have seen the reruns,” Gordon told the crowd. “I will tell Grant I feel like Florida Evans after James died because I thought this was going to be the year I didn’t have to hear Butch say ‘Come here Ed, do you know how much I averaged when I was at Yale?’”

A Toxic Trio: Kanye & Ray J Link Up to Hang Out at Candace Owens’ Documentary Screening

Seems like new bonds form when there’s a common enemy.

Kanye West and Ray J were recently spotted together at the screening of Candace Owens new documentary, “The Greatest Lie Ever Sold: George Floyd and the Rise of BLM,” which was held on Wednesday night at the Woolworth Theater in Nashville, Tennessee.

To the public’s surprise, the two appeared to be sharing a cordial moment on the red carpet as they posed in front of the media with Owens.

According to Page Six, Ray J previously shared messages between himself and Kanye surrounding the sex tape released during Ray J’s relationship with Kim Kardashian, who is Kanye’s ex-wife. In Kanye’s ‘talk’ with Ray J, he claimed to have “stopped Ray J from leaking a second sex tape.” The “One Wish” blasted the conversation on social media between him and Ye saying he felt betrayed that Kanye retrieved the laptop that allegedly held explicit videos of Kim.

After fans saw the two roaming the red carpet together at Owens’ screening, Twitter was rolling with posts and memes responding to the shocking find.

One user said, “Candace Owens, Ray J, and Kanye are all on a Kim K smear campaign. They hanging out on a red carpet acting all buddy buddy you can’t tell me that ain’t intentional.”

Another user commented, “Nothing unite men who were at odds like their hatred for a woman. Ray J and Kanye West has been beefing for years over Kim Kardashian now they’re cool. I ain’t even a fan of Kim but the way she have these men looking desperate is the mind control I love to see.”

According to TMZ, Owens orchestrated for both Kanye and Ray J to be present at the premiere in an attempt to spite Kim. Earlier this week, the political commentator reportedly leaked an old voicemail from Kim to Ray alleging that Kim called Whitney an “Old hag.”

Ray J and Kanye also recently called out Kim’s mom, Kris Kardashian alleging that she was responsible for leaking the tape, calling her a ‘mastermind.’ Sources say Ray J had recently released concerning posts that called attention to his suicidal ideas.

San Antonio Cop Arrested For ‘Unjustified’ Shooting of 17-Year-Old Eating Burger Inside Car

San Antonio Cop Arrested For ‘Unjustified’ Shooting of 17-Year-Old Eating Burger Inside Car

The San Antonio cop who fired rounds at a 17-year-old who was eating a cheeseburger inside his car has been fired and arrested.

James Brennand, formerly of the San Antonio Police Department, was arrested and charged with assault after turning himself in on Tuesday, CBS News reports. The charges are a result of Brennand shooting and critically wounding Erik Cantu, 17, who was eating in his car in a McDonald’s parking lot on October 2.

Shocking bodycam footage shows Brennand walking toward a parked car sitting in the parking lot. He then opens the driver-side door and ordered Cantu to get out of the car.

Cantu, holding a hamburger, appeared shocked and confused. Once the teen reversed the car, the open door struck Brennand. About five seconds after opening the car door, Brennand fired five rounds into the car and an additional five shots as the car drove away.

Brennand was fired two days after the shooting, NBC News reports. Cantu was shot multiple times and remains unconscious on life support, a family attorney confirmed.

“We have no comment to the former officer’s arrest at this time. Our main priority is Erik’s recovery,” the family said in a statement.

“Erik is still on life-support and is non-responsive but his oxygen levels are showing an improvement. We are being patient and optimistic that better health is coming. Please continue to keep Erik in your thoughts and prayers.”

Police training commander Alyssa Campos called out Brennand for violating his training and police procedures.

“The officer abruptly opened the driver’s door and ordered the driver out of the car” before the arrival of backup officers that Brennand had requested, Campos said.

“Nothing that officer did that night were in accordance with our training or our policies,” San Antonio Police Chief William McManus said on Monday.

On Tuesday, McManus followed up saying the shooting was “unjustified, both administratively and criminally.”

Brennand now faces two counts of aggravated assault by a public servant. McManus confirmed the two counts are for the two people inside the car when he fired the shots.

Study Shows Black Women Still Paid the Least Even as Gender Pay Gap Closes

Study Shows Black Women Still Paid the Least Even as Gender Pay Gap Closes

You would think a rise in corporate America would help close the pay gap for Black women compared to white men, however, it only gets wider.

A recent study from Payscale.com reveals that Black women are being paid the least in comparison to other groups, even as the gender pay gap is closing.

“When data are controlled for compensable factors, Black women have the widest gender pay gap ($0.98),” the study says in comparison to the rate of $1.03 for Asian women.

According to researchers, the pay gaps widen for Black women as they advance in their careers. They are reportedly paid less regardless of having the same level of experience as white men, in addition to other compensable factors, even when performing the same jobs.

Statistics from the study show that 66 percent of Black or African American women are individual contributors compared to 62 percent of white women and 59 percent of white men.

“All women of color except for Black women start out with controlled pay equity relative to white men at the individual contributor level, but as they progress up the corporate ladder, the gender pay gap widens.”

“Black women individual contributors make $0.99 for every $1 white men make when the same job characteristics are controlled for, but only $0.95 as executives,” researchers wrote.

According to Insider, a study from Goldman Sachs provided that the wealth gap is increasing for Black households, where the median percentage of wealth is 90 percent less compared to the median white household. Analysts provide that Black women remain as the most disadvantaged group across a broad range of economic measures including earnings and health.

“Lower levels of earnings for Black households account for about two-thirds of the average wealth gap,” analysts informed, “while the remainder is largely explained by financial factors, including access to capital and investment opportunities, personal finances, financial information, and housing.”

The Payscale.com study reports that employers who acknowledge these challenges can make an impact by prioritizing pay equity. Pay transparency laws also play a factor in efforts towards closing the gender pay gap.

Teenager Tries to Save 6-Year-Old Brother, Both Drown in Hurricane Ian

Teenager Tries to Save 6-Year-Old Brother, Both Drown in Hurricane Ian

More horror stories continue to surface in the wake of Hurricane Ian which ravaged South Florida taking the lives of 130 people.

A grieving mother is mourning the loss of two of her sons who drowned in a nearby canal in Lehigh on Oct. 5. Tahjir Burrowes, 6, had wandered out of his home wearing only a diaper and a T-shirt.

The severely autistic boy was drawn to water, his mother said, and made it to a hurricane-flooded canal near his home undetected, NBC News reports. Once his 17-year-old brother Tahjon got out of the shower, he immediately knew something was wrong.

“Mom, mom, mom! Tahjir got out of the house!” Tahjon said while banging on his mom’s bedroom door.

Moments later, Lachera Burrowes jumped into her car and rushed to the nearby canal and when she got there, she saw nothing.

“I saw nothing,” she said. “Quiet.”

After calling the police, authorities spent hours searching for the boys. A detective came to her home later to let her know that both of her sons drowned in the canal.

Burrowes knows Tahjon jumped in to save his little brother. Despite being years apart in age, her sons were very close.

The mother says the teen, who was one of her twins, was the one who could help keep Tahjir calm.

“I don’t know if one could be without the other,” Burrows said.

“He could not stand there and not jump in.”

The single mom of three, who lives paycheck to paycheck working as an addiction counselor, has a friend who launched a GoFundMe on her behalf seeking financial assistance for funeral costs.

“We posted a story of them missing in the LEHIGH area of FT. Myers Florida unfortunately they were found later that day of apparent drowning in the nearby canals after hurricane IAN,” the page shared.

An update revealed the funeral arrangements have been made for Oct. 26.

Pras Michel, tour, conviction, FBI, Fugees, rapper

Ready or Not! Pras of the Fugees Might Face Trump Officials and Leonardo DiCaprio In Money Laundering Trial

The Fugees member, Pras Michel, is set to go to trial on federal money laundering charges on Nov. 4 and the case could produce a star-studded witness lineup.

Ahead of the trial start date, it’s being said that federal prosecutors plan to call actor, Leonardo DiCaprio, and former Trump White House chief of staff, John Kelly, to the witness stand, Business Insider reports.

Michel, real name Prakazrel “Pras” Michel, is accused of illegally funneling contributions to Barack Obama‘s presidential campaign in 2012 and lobbying the Trump administration years later on behalf of the Chinese government and the Malaysian financier, Jho Low.

Michel pleaded not guilty to the charges and is set to go to trial to defend his claimed innocence. Federal prosecutors believe the Fugees founding member took part in an “illicit, for-profit, undisclosed foreign lobbying campaign” to help Low in connection to a Justice Department investigation into the looting of a Malaysian sovereign wealth fund, dubbed the 1MDB scandal.

Low is accused of laundering billions from the 1MDB fund to pay bribes to Malaysian and Abu Dhabi officials. DiCaprio’s name has been linked to the case due to his history with Low.

The Academy Award-winning actor received funding from Low for his 2013 film The Wolf of Wall Street. It’s believed that the money DiCaprio received from Low was stolen from the fund.

Others named in the suit include Trump administration officials, including former White House chief of staff John Kelly, former national security advisor, H.R. McMaster, Republican fundraiser, Elliot Broidy, and casino mogul, Stephen Wynn.

Prosecutors believe Michel recruited about 20 “straw donors” who made campaign contributions with Low’s money, believed to be stolen from the 1MDB fund. Following the rapper’s 2019 indictment, Michel is said to have tried to “intimidate and corruptly persuade” one of the straw donors to not fully cooperate with the investigation, prosecutors said in a court filing.
