US Representative Says It Is ‘Extremely Concerning’ Brittney Griner Has Been Blocked From US Embassy Contact

Continuing coverage on the detainment of Olympic gold medalist Brittney Griner in Russia, uncertainty about her well-being grows every day. Going on a month of imprisonment, the WNBA center was detained at an unclear date about a month ago and her physical location is still unknown, mounting on the heightened fear that she may become a political pawn, reports CNN

Griner’s wife, Cherelle Griner, and multiple U.S. representatives have called for her release, however, she still remains “without official government access to her,” stated Texas Rep. Colin Allred, per the outlet.

The U.S. Embassy has on multiple occasions seeked consular access to her but has been repeatedly denied for the duration of her detainment. Allred says this is “unusual and extremely concerning.”

“For Brittney’s sake, we don’t want her to become a part of this kind of political battle that’s going on, and we want to make sure that her rights are respected and that we are able to get access to her, and that she can get through the process and get home as quickly as possible,” Allred told CNN on Thursday.

Griner’s arrest came days before the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and as previously reported, a member of the U.S. House Armed Services Committee said it would “be very difficult to get Griner out of Russia,” considering the deadly conflict.

Griner has allegedly been in contact with her Russian lawyer, who has been communicating with her agent and family back in Texas.

Not only is Griner a Black woman in a foreign country at war, she is a gay woman in a notoriously anti-LGBTQ country.

“Our diplomatic relationships with Russia are nonexistent at the moment,” said California Rep. John Garamendi. “Perhaps during the various negotiations that may take place, she might be able to be one of the solutions. I don’t know.”

More than 57,000 people have signed the “Secure Brittney Griner’s Swift and Safe Return to the U.S.” petition on Change.org as of today.

Pamela Moses’ Legal Team Wants Her Voter Registration Charges Dismissed

Pamela Moses’ Legal Team Wants Her Voter Registration Charges Dismissed

A Memphis, Tennessee judge conceded for Black Lives Matter activist Pamela Moses to receive a new trial after she was sentenced to six years in prison for registering to vote, The Guardian reports.

On February 25, Judge Mark Ward, who previously sentenced Moses to prison in January, released Moses from jail on bond based on additional evidence not shared to Moses’ legal team, according to an email obtained by The Guardian.

Judge Ward accused Moses of deceiving her probation officer to sign documents that she was eligible to vote and deliberately submitted false documents.

“You tricked the probation department into giving you documents saying you were off probation,” said the judge at Moses sentencing.

However, the email that Judge Ward received through public records refutes his original claims against the civil rights activist.

In September 2019, a probation officer signed a certificate in error verifying that Moses completed her probation.

Moses’ legal team does not want her undergoing another trial and is calling for the D.A. to drop all her charges.

“We don’t want Ms. Moses to have to sit through another trial,” said Attorney Rodney Diggs. “We want all charges to be immediately dismissed by the District Attorney’s Office,” Action News 5 reports.

Though Moses is relieved that she is no longer in prison, she believes the justice system is using her case as a “scare tactic” to dissuade other people from voting, according to The Tennessee Tribune.

“It’s a scare tactic, what they did to me,” Moses said to the Guardian. “It’s like, ‘if she went to jail for that, we don’t need to do that. We don’t need to follow her because we’re going to be in jail for six years too.’ I would say it sends a confusing message to people who want to vote.”

She continues, “Why should people be worried if they’re going to be prosecuted for doing their civic duty?”

After the judge announced Moses’ new trial, the office of District Attorney Amy Wierich issued the following statement:

“The Tennessee Department of Correction failed to turn over a necessary document in the case of Pamela Moses and therefore her conviction has been overturned by the judge. When reporters or political opportunists use the word ‘state’ they need to be crystal clear that the error was made by the TDOC and not any attorney or officer in the office of the Shelby County District Attorney,” Action News 5 reports.

BLACK WOMEN FOR THE WIN: The Democracy Collaborative Appoints Sili Recio As Its New Senior Communications Director

The Democracy Collaborative (TDC) announced the non-profit organization’s newest addition.

Sili Recio will begin her latest position as the Senior Communications Director for The Democracy Collaborative on March 14. The brilliant leader is formerly the Vice President of Digital Strategy at MomsRising. She was promoted to the position in 2021. Prior to transitioning into the VP role, Recio served as the National Director of Social Media at the non-profit organization for four years.

The Democracy Collaborative’s president, Ted Howard, expressed his excitement about Recio, citing her extensive professional background and experience as the reason for the appointment.

“Sili will bring exceptional skills to our team as a communicator, organizer, and deft manager of both people and projects. She is committed to our mission of systemic change and is excited to lead us in new ways of communicating our message.”

Recio has almost two decades of experience in non-profit and for-profit spaces. Her vast knowledge of digital strategy, communications and project management has prepared the maverick for her new role at The Democracy Collaborative.

When asked about her vision for TDC, Recio told Black Enterprise, “My vision for this organization is simple– to continue to lead a transformational narrative as the work of this organization is the fulcrum for the systemic change that is so desperately needed, not only in this country but the world over.”

“I am excited to lend my experience, creativity and voice to this passionate team as we work toward advancing TDC’s vision, theory, policy, narrative, and practice of its mission statement,” she added.

In her spare time, the mother of an adorable 12-year-old daughter is also an accomplished author of the bestselling children’s book– “If Dominican Were A Color.”

Recio replaces Isaiah J. Poole, a prominent journalist and activist with 45 years of experience in communications. Poole will continue to collaborate with TDC as a consultant.

The Democracy Collaborative was co-founded by Howard and historian and activist Gar Alperovitz in 2000. The consortium was founded on the principles of “community.” The “research and demonstration lab for the democratic economy” advocates for community wealth-building and other strategies that move broad-based ownership and control of the economy forward.

PATERNITY AND ALLEGED ENGAGEMENT BLUES: Chicago Bulls’ Tristan Thompson And Maralee Nichols’ Foolishness Continues To Impact Their Son

On March 4, Maralee Nichols allegedly dropped receipts in court documents that may prove claims that Chicago Bulls player Tristan Thompson wanted nothing to do with the woman or their son, Theo, and that she may not have known that he was engaged.

US Weekly reported that the fitness trainer shared Snapchat messages that suggested that Tristan admitted to Maralee that he was engaged to Khloe Kardashian. The alleged statements also implied that he continuously tried to persuade Maralee not to go through the pregnancy, referring to his unborn child as a “mistake.”

“I’m engaged, but I will be married soon. I told you I won’t and can’t be in the child life at all by no means … Why not wait till yoj [sic] find the right person to have a family with,” the alleged communication read. “Why would you want a baby with a man that’s engaged? You wanna keep a mistake.”

Last April, Maralee reportedly went off on Tristan, responding in messages, “You literally just told me you are engaged and are trying to be with your family. I didn’t even know you were engaged. You have a record of treating me like absolutely crap, and this whole situation has been upsetting.”

Other information disclosed in court documents suggested that Tristan allegedly spent a whopping $2 million for an engagement ring for Khloe. The filing also revealed that the baller reportedly told Maralee, in May 2021, that the couple was packing up and leaving the United States with their daughter, True.

Khloe was seen sporting a massive rock on her ring finger in 2020.

“Just a heads up, me and my fiancè [sic] gonna announce publicly about out [sic] marriage,” he reportedly penned in the Snapchat message. “Just a heads up. We probably moving out the country in September and live either in Europe or Caribbean. Better living for us and our family away from the bs of America.”

In February, Maralee divulged that the 30-year-old basketball player still hadn’t seen their son, Theo – nor offered any financial assistance.

“Despite news reports stating otherwise, Tristan Thompson has done nothing to support his son. He has not made any attempt to meet their son, nor has he provided any financial assistance,” Nichol’s rep, Harvey Englander, said.

The real victim in this situation is the pair’s son, Theo. Although Maralee allegedly didn’t know about Tristan’s supposed engagement to the reality star, she didn’t suggest that she didn’t know about their high-profile relationship.

Without seemingly using a condom, Tristan’s philandering ways caught up with him, and it appears that his son is paying for it.

You’ve Been Served: Kanye West To Testify At Former Employee’s $250K Fraud Trial

You’ve Been Served: Kanye West To Testify At Former Employee’s $250K Fraud Trial

The artist formerly known as Kanye West is making headlines once more, however finally for something other than harassing his soon-to-be ex-wife and Pete Davidson. Ye has allegedly been subpoenaed to testify in federal court for the fraud trial of a former employee, reports the Chicago Tribune

Arjun Dhillon was an ex-employee of the 44-year-old rapper, who used West’s name to steal a quarter of a million dollars from an online charity run by a rich philanthropist in 2019, court records reveal. West must now stand witness at the Dirksen U.S. Courthouse in Chicago to provide his testimony, although not directly involved.

While Dhillon’s indictment has been ongoing since January 2020, it was just recently that the Donda 2 rapper’s name was revealed, having referred to him only as “Musician A.” This was done so in order to prevent any conflicts of interest for the jurors and secure proper security measures for the rap star’s appearance, according to iHeartRadio, with jury selection for the trial fast approaching on April 4. The prosecution will have until March 24 to submit their witness list and questions for potential jurors.

The law firms representing West have refused to be served papers, something one cannot do in the state of California, where he currently resides. It is reported that the rapper himself has not been given notice of the of the court papers, to which the U.S. District Judge Thomas Durkin said “it’s just a matter of time” before West is served by either a process server or federal marshal.

However, Durkin told one of Ye’s attorneys that it would be beneficial for his counsel to simply accept a receipt of the subpoena and file a motion to quash it if required.

The victim, named only as “Victim A,” is said to be Bill Pulte, grandson of the late founder of Detroit home-building company, PulteGroup.

Dallas Substitute Teacher Left Bloody After Student Throws Metal Chair At His Face

Dallas Substitute Teacher Left Bloody After Student Throws Metal Chair At His Face

In a video that has swept the internet, sparking outrage at how a substitute teacher in Dallas, Texas was treated A student is seen throwing a heavy classroom metal chair and striking him on the head.

A letter from Dr. Larry Lewis, interim superintendent of schools at the DeSoto Independent School District of Texas, confirmed the DeSoto West Middle School altercation that occurred on Wednesday between several students and the substitute teacher.

Video and pictures are making their rounds on social media of the incident, where after the chair is thrown at the teacher’s head, he retaliates by throwing two chairs of his own, both missing the student, MEAAWW reports.

The teacher then goes to sit down while the students attacking him leave, to wipe the blood streaming down his face. Amidst the chaos, the rest of the kids in the classroom are heard screaming and laughing.

In a Facebook post by the DeSoto Police Department, they said, “All sides of the incident are currently under investigation. In response to the videos, tomorrow there will be a larger police presence at Desoto West to prevent any further incidents. The safety and security of the children and staff members is a top priority.”

Per a DeSoto ISD representative, the students initiated the attack, and injured the sub to the point of paramedics being called to the scene. Besides what is seen in the video, the district did not further comment on the reason for the argument, punishment for the students, or if any students were held by police.

Many commented on social media that parents of the unruly students should be charged on behalf of their child to have some sort of repercussion for this type of behavior. Another user commented, “He’ll get fired and chargers pressed. Kid will get 3 days of suspension and 10 days ISS. He’s definitely wrong but these kids are out of control man. There’s no true consequences for their actions.”
